  4. I'll go with Lehigh's Colin Kilrain in 1981 and 1982. Kilrain was seeded 1st in the 1981 tournament, based on an undefeated season including a win over Ed Banach, the eventual champion. Colin lost 5-3 in the semis to Clarion's Charlie Heller and wrestled back for 3rd place. In 1982 Kilrain was again undefeated and seeded 1st, this time at 190; the other top seeds were Mike Mann, Bill Scherr, and Pete Bush. Colin had beaten Mann and Bush during the season. This was the tournament when Harold Nichols threw a fit over the 190-lb seeding and the seeding committee re-seeded the weight; Mann and Bush were originally seeded 2nd and 3rd and would have met in the semis. Instead Kilrain met Bush in the semis and walked into a 44-second fall. Bush beat Mann 3-3, 2-2, criteria for the title; Kilrain wrestled back and beat Scherr for 3rd. Bush said it was the only time he beat Mann in a lifetime of trying. Kilrain made a career of the Navy, became a Seal, recently retired as a Vice Admiral. His wife is a retired astronaut. One of their children, Sean, is on the Lehigh roster now.

  6. these and Dan Gable are good nominations. Maybe Jon Trenge the year he lost in the last few seconds to Damion Hahn in the NCAA finals? Was that the year before Trenge met Cael (bumping up a weight for his 4th NCAA title) in Albany?

  9. Typical Brands interview.... Reporter 1: Coach, what were your thoughts on the match tonight? TB: WHHHAT WERRRE MY THOOOUGHTS?! Next question. Reporter 2: Were you happy with the win tonight? TB: Define happy. Reporter 3: What were your takeaways from the match? TB: We like our guys. Reporter 4: Any upcoming news for the die-hard Iowa fans? TB: You've been around long enough to know not to ask that question.

  10. I have to admit that when I saw the title of the thread, I was a little scared. But @ionel and you had me laughing. Here's a JOMBO™ that I don't think has been posted on this board yet.

  11. I agree 100% with both of these, but these also occur because both wrestlers wind up in positions they aren’t willing to sacrifice because of the risk of doing so. I think it would be sick, because it just forces wrestling. I think 80% of stalemates are save time stalemates instead of real stalemates. What if, for example, they changed stalemates to a double stall call? Just spitballing =D

  14. https://thehill.com/business/4413609-dimon-democrats-should-grow-up-listen-to-trump-supporters/ Dimon: Democrats should ‘grow up,’ listen to Trump supporters JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon slammed Democratic messaging about MAGA, or “Make America Great Again,” Republicans on Wednesday, telling Democrats to “grow up” and “listen” to supporters of former President Trump. “When people say MAGA, they’re actually looking at people voting for Trump and … they’re basically scapegoating them,” Dimon told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “I don’t like how [Trump] said things about Mexico … but he wasn’t wrong about some of these critical issues, and that’s why they’re voting for him,” Dimon continued. “And I think people should be a little more respectful of our fellow citizens.” “I mean, really, can we just stop that stuff and actually grow up and treat other people with respect and listen to them a little bit,” he said, adding, “I think this negative talk about MAGA is going to hurt Biden’s election campaign.” Dimon has stayed out of politics but I think what he is saying here is true. People who support Trump are concerned about things. People who support Biden are concerned about things. Best to listen to all of them and deal with all the concerns. This is a nice fresh take and I hope the nation gets it. mspart

  15. Hunte drew Lehigh's Bob Sloand in the first round in '77. Sloand had talent but was unseeded due to a roller coaster year. He won 9-9, 3-2 against Hunte, won his second match, and then med forfeited the next day due to a knee injury. Defeated wrestlers only wrestled back if they lost to semi-finalists back then, so Hunte was out. Iowa finished 3rd, 11.5 points behind Iowa State; it probably cost Iowa the team title.

  16. A number of good answers here.....here's another one.....Steve Hunte Iowa 1976 and 1978 2 time Big Ten Champion 1977 and 1978. Ranked #1 both years. Seeded #1 in '77 and Seeded #2 in 1978. He went 0-1 in '77 and 3 and 2 in '78, not placing either year.

  24. I myself am an ASU alum and the distractions didn't impact my college wrestling career at all, even a little bit. My career as a D1 wrestler went *exaclty* the same as it would have had there been no distractions at all.

  25. I see high school refs call stalemate when the top guy has legs in for an extended period. Is that the right call? I think of it as a form of riding, like a spiral ride or controlling the wrist - which would never be called a stalemate.

  26. Those guys are pretty funny, even when being loud and outlandish it's often in a playful and self-depricating way.

  27. Yeah I see a lot of the stalemate positions being called as positions where one wrestler is in a clear advantage position and the other wrestler is just holding on to force a stalemate and get a fresh start. I think we could do away with 90% of stalemate calls in matches.

  32. I don't know much about the Iowa stuff. What I do know is she's an establishment shill who is beholden to her donors. She's a war hawk and her speeches come across super cringe and not well thought out. However I would begrudgingly vote for her over Biden or Newsom.

  43. This right here. Mckee always looks so average during the season, drops some losses he shouldn't and just flips a switch at nationals. Dude is a blood round bandit. Only thing that might bite him this year is that he is a 6th year senior right now, and the weight cut might be extra expensive considering he's 24~25.
