Spencer Lee is the most interesting storyline this Olympic year. Hailed as the next coming since high school. He has had an unusual career thus far with some tremendous success, some major bumps in the road, and far less freestyle than anyone could have expected. He has shown flashes of a level that none of these other guys can hit, but also an Achilles heel or two. The biggest Lee fans out there have to admit it wouldn't be shocking for him to gas out and get beat in the second period by a guy we've never heard of. And the biggest Lee detractors have to admit it wouldn't be shocking for him to go out and blow the doors off the competition.

If you want someone who can light up the scoreboard in a hurry then Lee is your guy If you want someone proven who can create his own offense but has come up just short against the best in the world (silver in 18, barely missed merkle against Uguev in olympics) then Gilman is your guy If you want the dude who beat Suriano and Gilman to win the most recent spot along with a number of other quality international victories then Richards is your guy If you want high octane reigning world champ but comes with the price of a heavy cut then Vito is your guy If you want to cheer for Daton Fix then that's great. Exactly. No one knows what these numbers mean, never mind if they are accurate. Even when the numbers are disclosed people don't know what they mean. Take Shohei Otani, for example. First it was a 10 year $700 million dollar deal, but then the structure was revealed and it was counted as a 10 year $460 million NPV deal. But even that isn't correct. Their NPV calc is based on all the deferred money being paid in 10 years. But only 1/10 is paid in 10 years. The point is never trust the headline number, never believe the rumored number, and never trust someone else to do the math for you.

they're all designed differently. each school has its own way of doing things. some include tuition in the 'value' of what they offer; some don't. some require you to simply compete for their college, some have FS escalators, some have branding/image/social aspects, etc, etc. you're asking all the right questions but you seem to doubt they exist (or that the numbers are that high). i assure you, they are.

And if you want some anecdotal then Micic couldn't medal either and would never make the US team plus look at the bracket he has to go through at '23 worlds... right up until he won a world championship. Richards had a tough draw and didn't rise to the occasion, it happens at worlds but I would gladly be in a foxhole with him. Gilman came on the scene. Micic burned down the scene. Why can't Richards do the same? Why can't *any* of our 57 front-runners do the same? Oddly enough while Lee is the sexiest he is also the least proven by a country mile.

the comparison is still interesting. Suriano has better position, metcalf more offensive...interesting to think how they benefit or suffer from free vs folk circumstances.....suriano wrestles a very modern stiyle, metcalf very mid 90s...hard to gather my thoughts.

How common is it outside of PSU, Iowa, Michigan, or tOSU? Maybe Cornell and OkSt but Yianni and Fix are exceptions rather than rules given their accolades (and one could argue that Fix hasn't earned it if you disregard freestyle). The one thing I have learned about NIL is that even though wrestling finally has a bag man, it's still very hush hush. Transparency is necessary for wrestlers, families, coaches, journalists, and fans.

This Michigan squad could get as high as second or as low as 15th. It all depends on peaking as well as injuries. DeAugustino - Depending on brackets, he could win it all. He majored the highest returning placer two weeks before Nationals last year. Cannon - Could place as high as 3rd. He beat Nagao and while Crookham looks promising, I am not sold (yet). Lemley - Could place. He could. True frosh, plenty of moxy, just needs his feet under him a bit more and that confidence could take him next level. I expect a match or two win at the least at NCAAs. Gomez - Could win it all. Lewan - He isn't beating Robb. Robb sonned him. He is the only one Lewan can't beat though. Peak of 2nd. Amine - He isn't beating O'Toole. That Carr match was closer than I thought it would be, though. Peak of 2nd. Griffith - He isn't beating Sta(l)rocci. Peak of 2nd. Bullock - He lost to 157lber Negron then rattled off a dozen wins at CKLV. He could AA. Not sure how high, though. Striggow - I would be happy to win a match at NCAAs here. Davison - I think he could still win it all. I am calling peak of 2nd, though. So if everyone peaks at their absolute best and no injuries, Michigan can still get 2nd. We could also be looking at as low as 2-3 low AA.

It will really depend on how the coaches bring along the wrestlers so they peak properly in March. Back in 2022, they did it perfectly with Suriano, giving him just enough mat time so he'd be ready for nationals but not so much that he'd rebel or lose focus. I think the situation will be similar for Gomez.

Gomez is a legit title contender for sure. He is a tier 1 guy with Lovett, Henson and Parco.
