  1. Coach Smith said they’re fighting sickness and/or nagging injuries. Apparently only returning AA’s are susceptible to such ailments. Someone call Dr Fauci out of retirement, this phenomenon can probably be prevented with proper masking.

  3. 125 - Dean Peterson may have secured the spot over Rutgers teammate Dylan Shawver; same for unseeded Diego Sotelo of Harvard who was unseeded and took 3rd after a first round loss to Jack Medley. Sotelo beat teammate Beau Bayless in the consis 10-0 and won 5 matches before a MFF in the match for 3rd over Peterson. 133 - 4th Seed Michael Colaiocco of Penn won the title with an 8-1 win over Taylor Lamont in the quarters, a 15-13 win over #1 seed Lucas Byrd in the semis and a 3-2 win in the final over Chris Cannon that included a riding time point. Ryan Crookham had a big 2-1 decision in the quarters over #2 seed Joe Hellman of Rutgers. 141 - unseeded Saul Ervin of SIU Edwardsville took 5th and got to the semis with wins over Joe Zargo (WBF 1:54) and 4th seed Jesse Vasquez of ASU. 149 - unseeded Caleb Tyus of SIU Edwardsville also made it to the semis with wins over Graham Rooks (4th seed) and 5th seed Sam Hillegas. He took 4th to Doug Zapf (2-6) but beat Tyler Badget of Pitt in the consis semis 7-5. Badgett also had a good tourney. 157 - unseeded Drew Scharenbro of WIsconsin won 2nd. 165 - not a lot of surprise. Lucas Revano of Penn won four matches in the consis and got 7th from the 14th seed 174 - Unseeded Daniel Wask (Unattached Navy Prep) beat #2 seed Troy Fisher in the quarters and fell 2-3 to Nick Contrera in the semis, then won 4th after a win the consi semis over Pitt's Luca Augustine. Wask is going to do some big things in NCAA wrestling after his PG year. 184 - Jaritt Shonhoster (UW Whitewater) was the 5th seed and won 2nd, with a fall over the top seed Brian Soldano in the semis. 197 - Andrew Davison Northwestern lost to Cole Urbas 2-3 in his second match on the front side and then won 3rd place with 6 wins in the consis - beast! 285 - Pitt's unseeded Dayton Pitzer took 2nd and won several big matches, including 4-0 over #1 seed Colton Schultz (ASU) in the quarters and a pin (5:57) over 4th seed Trent Hilger in the semis. Plenty of other big wins, but these are some I noticed!

  5. Just listened to the Brian Smith pre-scuffle interview on Flo. He makes it clear both coaches and athletes want changes to the traditional college wrestling season. From this point forward I am no longer going to be disappointed and accept unless I am watching the actual NCAA tourney, nothing really matters and to expect forfeits and no-shows.

  13. He just made a comment in an interview I saw somewhere where he talked about how his hamstrings allowed him to do things most people wouldn't be able to do with a torn ACL. The word "special" was mine. I'm sure a lot of wrestlers would fall into that category. We know Yianni won with a torn ACL and Kerk is currently wrestling with a torn ACL. Also, here's a doctor's perspective: https://youtu.be/p0J91XXv6yg

  14. And, I'm the mathematician that always is bitching about people having no grasp of large numbers. Color me embarrassed. Lol. The 31 billion I mentioned is only 1/10 of what we owe Luxembourg! I usually put these federal budget/deficit numbers in terms of $ per man, woman, child in the US. In this case, the 31 trillion is about 100,000 per man, woman, child assuming 300 million people in the US. That makes it seem more realistic. I'm going to guess that you also don't run your personal finances like this.

  17. I could see an internal policy behind closed doors where the coach says "anyone who earns AA, has also earned an extra weekend off after Christmas (southern scuffle). You want off next year? Then earn it.

  25. Arujau is 59-6, might get nearly 20 more wins this year, and he has next year to go. Foca has 37 through 1.5 seasons (not clear if he will get one or two more years). Yianni is 97-2. RBY has 87 wins (across five years); Max Dean has 89 wins. Glory has 80 wins; Monday has 81. Jacob Warner has 85 wins. All those could get to 100, health (and weight, for Glory) permitting. But your point is well taken!

  26. Wrestling in America needs to make a choice. Do they want it to be the inclusive amazing sport that could actually compete with basketball and football if managed correctly.. or.. do they want it to be a rich kid and/or psycho dad, club sport that is “niche”. people will get triggered or offended if they want. But that’s honestly becoming the main question facing the sport

  28. True, without a doubt. Every once in a while, watching tournaments like the last couple days, I catch myself daydreaming about how much better I would have been in college if I only knew then what I know now. Then I wake up and remember the weight cuts. Youthful optimism pushed me through things I can't imagine doing again. Like beating your head against a wall - after it's over, it doesn't seem near as bad. But it was. If we don't make changes, nothing will change. Matside weigh-ins? I'm 100% in favor of trying it.

  30. He also apparently claims the season is too long as part of why the guys are currently out. But we are just halfway though now. By that logic if we had a shortened season wouldn’t those sick and injured guys still be out but it would be around conference and NCAAs instead.

  31. The strength difference between Lee and anyone is unbelievable. He is one of the strongest 125s in a long time and he has functional strength to boot. I really feel sorry for opponents on the senior circuit once he unlocks the Dad Strength ability.

  33. Weight cutting is the single worst thing in wrestling. Matside weighins (for each match) end it completely.

  40. Was planning to go to Scuffle this weekend. Appeared great team & individual matchups (eg 1, 2 & 3 @165lb). But looking at Midlands and now similar ISU & Vtech thing at Scuffle appears it may just be a 3 team intrasquad tourney. It used to be you didn't have to think about whether to go to Midlands, you just booked your hotel and showed up because you knew there was going to be great team & individual competition, the best teams showed up to win, same at Scuffle except warmer temps. Also National Duals was always the best, the top teams showed up plus got to see a few backups in the early rounds. Now its why even have holiday tournaments, maybe just let the kids go home and eat. It used to be one of the points of the semester break tourneys is fans could also show up. T&C killed the Duals, now the holiday break tournaments are slowly dying. Maybe we need to put Bob in charge, he knows about dying but also about how to bring things back to life.

  41. I should add that I am not bitter or resentful about what is happeneing. Clearly, coaches and athletes are looking to redefine the college wrestling grind: who they see, the length of the season, how they compete, etc... Heck, I just listened to David Taylor in a recent podcast discuss how he is exploring new ideas in his training and competition schedules. The writing is on the wall that those pushing to the highest levels of our sports want changes. For example, I think it makes great sense to move wrestling to one semester and, especially in a sport that requires intense weight management, away from Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the holidays. I would have loved to enjoy time back at home in December, and then start getting after it in mid January. I cannot imagne anyone who has been through such would disagree that.

  42. Nope - you're wrong, Willie. Midlands is a good show, given the expectation level of the participating teams, and super high quality B1G+ broadcast. Highest caliber guys weren't there, but it's a rebuilding year for the tournament after hiatus. No reason to believe it doesn't make a big jump next year. It's good. OK - you're only half wrong. Soldier Salute sucks rocks. Truly terrible. Cool that proceeds go to a deserving fund. But doubt the proceeds will amount to much given how lame it is.
