Good interview, but I have questions…
Who is teaching him English?  I had to laugh when he tossed out a few Kentucky Mudflap “I reckon” responses.

what is “chuffed”?

Standard UWW lost in translation quote. I laughed at the students and my flat mates are really strong, so I'm learning a hell of a lot from them". Along with the Trader Joe's employee t-shirt.

There's a reason the area(s) between Philly and Pittsburgh are referred to as "Pennsyltucky"!

British/Australian slang for pleased or delighted.

I'll believe he's wrestling American folkstyle when I see it.

In Pyles' recent interview of Cael, Cael said this regarding if Ono will be wrestling in a Penn State singlet: "It could be this year, it could be next year, but he's definitely going to wrestle at Penn State, hopefully for a couple years."

….. still can’t get off bottom.

… but I’m sure he learned how to get the top guy called for stalling, so he will cut him. Folkstyle mat wrestling is mostly two guys pretending to wrestle, so they don’t get called for stalling and their opponent does.

Riding time is important.  The elite bottom wrestlers can get the stalling calls.  The ones that are bad at it not so much.   Also keep in mind the refs put their whistle in their pocket a lot at the ncaa tourney and less often early in the year.

I heard that and thought it was strange. He already sat out a year, what is the wait? Why wouldn't he wrestle this year?

Bottom wrestling and neutral scrambling doesn’t translate to well to career freestyle wrestlers.

What are your case studies here? I would argue that Bastida and Ech beat a lot more guys who grew up wrestling folk than they lost to.

Why does everyone act like learning how to wrestle from bottom or through a scramble is some insurmountable task to overcome for a world class athlete? Up until recently, most high school guys had to essentially "learn" how to get off bottom in college as freshmen because everything that worked for them against lesser competition in high school didn't cut it at the next level. They essentially had to relearn how to wrestle from bottom in college. Ono probably had a better stand up than 99% of high school wrestlers after a couple of weeks in the room. Learning technique the right way, having the will that it takes to compete in folkstyle, and the overall athleticism and ability will greatly outweigh the experience gained wrestling folkstyle from ages 5-15.

I think the biggest challenge of transitioning from freestyle to folk is how much more mental toughness comes into play in folkstyle. In freestyle, bottom wrestling in par terre is easy. Just hold your ground, and the ref puts you back on your feet. There is nothing in wrestling that is more mentally defeating than being rode like a dog in folkstyle. You expend all this energy to get to your feet, you get returned. You get put on your belly and it takes everything you have just to get back to your base. I would guess at least half the time someone gets rode out in college their will to escape was broken at some point during that period. It is part of what most of us grew up loving about wrestling. It is a sport where simply being willing to push yourself further than your opponent often gets rewarded. That isn't nearly as much of a pre-req for freestyle success.

I'm sure he did.

I think it depends on the results of his Desmond wrestle off. Or could suck down a bit to wrestle off with his roomie.
