I would be surprised if he got a medical for that year since he wrestled the 2 semester. He shouldn’t though. Everyone is getting medical like it’s free candy. Respectfully, I hope the NCAA tightens up on these eligibility rules. People are definitely abusing it. I don’t think Konner D. and Paddy G. Should get a medical. Gallagher getting one wouldn’t be that bad IMO. He seemed to at least be the starter before getting hurt. Doucet getting one would set a bad precedent IMO. Basically any backup that didn’t wrestle much could probably get one then. I have a feeling Connor Mirasola is going to try for one this year, if Doucet’s is approved his will be too. It just gives guys even less incentive to transfer out of PSU or OK State.
JMill Posted April 18 Posted April 18 Medical redshirts need to go. If a high school kid gets hurt, does he get to stick around high school another year? Could you imagine what kind of shady stuff would be going on if they did? Well, that’s what we are seeing in college now. Blame it on those who have abused it, so now nobody gets it. The process is better than it used to be, but Olympic redshirts should only be granted to those who make the National Team (Top 3 on the ladder). Make it a calculated risk, not a free lunch. For every “opportunity” created for these 23-28-year-old grown men, you are taking an opportunity away from an 18-19-year-old young man for which it was intended. 1

I agree, I would open up the age from 24-28 because if a kid graduates at 18 (like a great amount do) that aligns with 19yr redshirt, 20-23 RS Freshman through RS Senior years. That was the "norm" before COVID and all the NIL, RS, Medicals, Olympics, ect. The good ol' rule of 5 years to compete 4. 2
JMill Posted April 18 Posted April 18 You’re correct… should’ve said 24-28… Even “traditional” redshirts are a farce now that wrestlers can compete in five varsity dates (which could be 15+ matches). Rosters are smaller now (for many teams) and kids are coming into college ready to compete (many with a semester or two worth of college credits). Those who aren’t ready to start, there is nothing wrong with 18-19 year olds sitting behind 21-23 year olds for a year or two, but they shouldn’t have to sit behind guys who listened to a DiscMan while warming up in high school. The portal is there for those who don’t see a path to the starting line-up, and the opportunities at D-2/D-3 are only growing. Just like reducing the number of weight classes in high school doesn’t reduce opportunities, it strengthens the JV level and gives it more validity, eliminating redshirts could do the same for the other divisions.

Idaho Posted April 19 Posted April 19 5 hours ago, 1032004 said: Really? Guys who had zero chance of starting the year they received a medical for? Do you have any examples? This has obviously been taken advantage of over the years, but I don't see in the criteria that you have to be a starter to get a redshirt. That would be an unfair application of the rule if it did not apply to everyone - starter or not. The injury or illness must be season-ending. The injury must occur in the first half of the season. The athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season’ competitions (rounded up when necessary). Documentation from a qualified medical professional is required. Based on the criteria, I don't see how Paddy Gallagher gets a medical year this year. He does not meet the 30% criteria and possibly not even the first half criteria. As to Brayden Thompson - I have no clue to his injury last year that kept him from competing. But.... we all know that doctor that it doesn't take much to convince you can't compete. 1 Sponsored by INTERMAT
boconnell Posted April 19 Posted April 19 At this point anyone with a doctor's note gets a medical RS. 1

1032004 Posted April 19 Posted April 19 1 hour ago, Idaho said: This has obviously been taken advantage of over the years, but I don't see in the criteria that you have to be a starter to get a redshirt. I know, but if you’re a backup it’s pretty easy to satisfy the less than 30% criteria
