That's right, baby.

Swimming is back.

Tough start for the Americans as two swimmers dropped out due to illness and a third dropped out of an individual event to focus on a relay.

Apparently during training camp in Thailand several swimmers got sick.

But the highlights of tonight's (tomorrow morning - it is in Singapore) are the women's 400 Free with Katie Ledecky the fastest in the prelims, but Sumer MacIntosh just set the world record at the Canadian trials. Should be tasty.

The men's 4x100 Free relay also features today. The US will be pushed hard by Italy.

Having multiple strokes is ridiculous. It’s the aquatic equivalent of adding backwards run, one legged hop, sideway shuffle, etc. to track. Just jump in the pool and swim whatever is fastest.

What, you don't think a single athlete should be able to win 15 Gold medals in a single Olympics?  Fascist.

It's also the sport that, for whatever reason, gets their athletes turned into national heroes. Even if swimming is almost as niche as wrestling. The French went gaga over that swimmer at the last Olympics. Phelps became a household name. Maybe it is because they offer 500 potential medals for every swimmer to win at the games. 50 meter fly, 100 fly, 120 fly,  backstroke, front stroke, relay, team, individual, mixed.

Ha ha, you green eyed monsters. Your jealousy is understandable.  Swimming is the greatest sport known to man...or beast, for that matter. Making swimmers, by extension, the greast athletes in the known world.

71% of the earth is covered by water where we reign supreme. Leaving a measly 29% for wrestlers. Swimmers clearly deserve more medals. And more medals we shall have.

We shall stroke our breasts and backs, and butter our flies with a total freedom of style.

I educate you on this from a position of complete objectivity.

But the swimmers only swim in man-made pools which only constitutes .0001 of 1 percent of the earth's surface.

And then be “anointed” the best athlete ever…. Because 15.    Counting titles for counting sake is bubkus as far as realistic ranking of athletes.

Good news, they are adding even more swimming events to the LA Olympics so you'll have no shortage of things to complain about

Does @BobDole have a special place like the Zoo to which swim posters may be banished?  🤔

Day 2 prelims wrapping up. Not a great start. First time in my lifetime that no American man made it to the semifinals in the 100 back, a stroke that the US has dominated for many, many years

Yeah, it is a down year for men's back.

Here’s the thing, in most sports that I can think of, when a new technique is developed, they don’t create a completely new event.

Back in the early days of track & field, shot putters pretty much just stood in the circle and put it into the throwing sector. Then they developed the Hop Step which is pretty much as it sounds. In the early 1950s, Parry O’Brien developed the Glide technique. In the early 1970s, the Soviets popularized the Spin technique. While there are still some Gliders on the international circuit, most of the top throwers use the Spin. You can use whatever technique you choose as long as it complies with the rules, but there is only one shot put event.

Same thing with the high jump. Techniques have changed dramatically, but there is still only one high jump event.

In swimming, the front crawl/freestyle and even the breaststroke have a long history. The butterfly developed out of modifying the breaststroke as it was a faster technique For some reason they eventually decided to create a new event out of it. The backstroke, much like race walking, is a fine fitness endeavor, but should not be a competitive racing event.

If logic were to prevail, competitive swimming would at least cut down to freestyle and butterfly.

I am also open to discussing the need for both the long jump and triple jump
