Watched the match & it sure looked like Carr just couldn't keep up the pace.

Looked worn out near the end.

Does Messenbrink have the skill & technique to get past the blocking of top guys & force action this way? Lots of action and movement doesn't always mean scoring, just action and movement. Meanwhile the opponent picks their spots & scores. Can he overcome it?

That Carr needs a bigger gas tank to fire on all cylinders against the high octane Mesinbrink motor

I thought I remembered Basch talking about how he thought 79 KG was going to be Carr's for this cycle and that he would drop to 74 KG for 2028.  Perhaps Carr beating Takatani changed his mind?  Not sure, but it could be his drop 'back' down to 74 KG effected his conditioning a bit.  I know Mesenbrink is a MONSTER with his cardio, but Carr is also a monster in his own right (as shown by his exhibition victory over the Olympic Silver medalist).

Carr/Takatani was at 76kg as well right? Could definitely see 74 being tough for him

Carr has no shot, he's been the same wrestler for a long time.

I wouldn't proclaim this yet. If the 2 out of 3 looks similar to the US open, then I'd agree. But freestyle matches have a lot more variance than folk. I wouldn't over analyze one match. That being said, I expected Carr to look a lot better at the trial tournament.

I think a bit too much was made of the takatani match. I do not think Takatani was peaked and realistically outside of the takedown to the lace early the match was largely one sided for Takatani. I think Carrs matach with Kurmagomedov was more indicative of where he is at. Takatani is also small for 74kg so 76kg only makes that worse.

I try to make predictions while they are still interesting.

Carr's best strategy

Outslick and pull out all stops for match 1.

Sandbag Match Two, just take the L.

Get match 3 to as close to a toss up as possible and hope for the best.

Or just hope they misspell Mitch's name on the score card and he fails to show.  😉

Askren, Messenbrink and O'Toole all went to the same HS. Not a major national power but they produce some great individual talent.

Are you sure?

I didn't think Takatani was small for 74 KG.  He was 79 KG up until he made the drop for the Olympics, wasn't he?

Edit:  No he was 65 KG before the jump to 74 KG.  Not sure who I was thinking of.
