What happens to wrestlers in the transfer portal who don't get picked up?

Now schools are still going to have donors that want their money to go to wrestling. I'd be curious if they are better off giving to the school or giving to a NIL trust.  I have a feeling college wrestling is going to look very different in 2-3 years.

Best option might be to earmark or donate directly to the wrestling program, as long as it doesn't take away from what the department allocates for wrestling. My guess is that once the dust settles, there won't be much of a difference between giving to the athletic dept vs. an NIL collective, as there's speculation that they'll all fall under one umbrella or that collectives will go away altogether.

That's not they way I read the agreement. Don't think everyone has to be on scholarship. It says that school may offer 30.

Correct. VT's using around 13-15, I'd imagine that's pretty universal for schools that Opt in and aren't named PSU, Iowa, or Ok State

Cael Sanderson has said they will not be anywhere near 30 scholarships. I imagine Iowa and Oklahoma State will also be well below 30 unless the NIL market value assessments are effective in decreasing deal sizes. Then, the three existing big donors may turn to endowing incremental scholarships. The one drawback to that approach is it doesn't allow for the current system of concentrating payments for big stars.

They go to the ultimate wrestling purgatory: the "Unattached" category in WrestleStat! 🫣

Is it similar to when posters like @PortaJohn end up in the Zoo?  🤷‍♀️

Somebody please clarify something for me, is it 30 total scholarships or 30 total roster positions? If it's 30 total spots on the roster then that would go a long way to keeping schools from hoarding talent.

For teams that opt in, 30 roster spots, no scholarship limits. So effectively up to 30 scholarships. No one will be able to fund 30 scholarships though, so just a headline number, not reality.

But why would he want to? Giving $50k each to 20 non-starters does not achieve the goal.

It could keep some top talent from going to OSU or PSU, though. Which would go a long way in achieving the goal.

Because he loves squawkeye wrestling.  🤷‍♀️

You said "will be able" not "will be so silly."  😉

Exactly. If he doesn't want to, they will not be able to.

But he still will be able to even if he doesn't want to.

Btw: I've got a stack of 3x5 cards ready for this debate.  🙂

30 roster spots. That's good news for the smaller schools.

How so?  Some of the smaller schools have way more than 30.  I think Sacred Heart might be cutting 20+ if they opt in.

It's good because schools like PSU, Iowa, and OSU won't be able to hoard talent. Barraclough for example, riding the bench at PSU for years when he was clearly a very good wrestler and could've been a 3 or 4 year starter at most schools.

I had no idea Sacred Heart had over 50 guys on their wrestling team. That's insane.

Schools such as Sacred Heart (wisely) use athletic recruiting as a way to draw paying students to the University.  I may have heard Rob Koll call this the "Division III model." Koll wasn't being insulting; he saw this as a good model for smaller D1 schools going forward.  If there are 50 paying kids on the team, they are less likely to be cut.

If they "opt in," then wrestling could be in trouble.

Ok I have some dumb questions because it seems like this won’t actually help smaller programs.

1. Even with a 30 man roster limit what’s to stop top teams from having extra killers in the room with RTC/greyshirts, paying them, and having them compete unattached?
2. With wealthy donors already the top programs, why wouldn’t they also bankroll 30 scholarships? 20 extra scholarships at 50k each is a million bucks (the rumored price of several NIL deals), keeps studs out of other lineups, builds up the room…

I don’t know, I’m certainly missing something (like a bunch of money to throw at college wrestlers lol)
