Hello! I am an eccentric introverted nerd teen male who loves Anime, Video Games, STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and Chess. I am not shy but I am kind of socially-awkward. I am not shy. I just love being quiet, friendless, and alone. Speaking of STEM and Chess, I am highly skilled in the two of them.

But I also want to join my US public highschool's male wrestling team. I am currently a US public highschool student.

Am I gonna get bullied and ostracized? Do you people in Intermat hate nerds?

One of the best to ever wrestle is proudly way into Japanese cartoons and video games.  I'm pretty sure you will be just fine.

If you work as hard as you can and never complain, you should be fine.  If you cause the team to do extra conditioning, and you are not the strongest on the team, yes you will be bullied.  This is not related to being awkward and nerdy.

Just work hard and the rest will come natural. Wrestling could be a way to build confidence and meet friends

Would a wrestler be bullied if they joined the Chess or STEM club?  Why are you worried about being bullied by wrestlers?

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

Be yourself... do the above and genuinely work hard... your teammates will know that when they see your efforts on the mat.

Do that, and they'll back you up. Anyone else that decides to try to pick on you, wiil be sorry they did.

They'll have your back.

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

For very personal reasons, I sure hope not.

I want to expand on my answer a bit.

Do you people in Intermat hate nerds?

No one on this message board is nerdier than I am. If you look at any of my content it is all about the math and probabilities. While I do not get universal love, I get damn near universal love for that content. But who would want universal love anyway? That would be boring and not help you to grow. I have found this community to be VERY open to new ideas and ways of looking at things. Be original and interesting and no one will care if you are a nerd.

Am I gonna get bullied and ostracized?

In Intermat? Sure a little, but that depends. You will find that you do not agree with every point of view or every method of expressing them. This will bother you a lot at first. But after a while it will bother you less. When it is bothering you the most you will be tempted to engage. But engaging is a choice. If you do not engage people tend to leave you alone. And if people get really unreasonable, the mods do a good job of banning people, or putting them on pause for a while.

In the wider world? Sure. We all get bullied to some extent. But I think wrestling is very accepting of hard work. Hard work is easy to see and even easier to respect. Take a guy like Mitchell Mesenbrink. He is as nerdy as you will find in wrestling, but he is also respected for his high attack rate and mental approach.

Actually, highschool wrestling seems kind of scary.

Highschool gridiron football(it's American Football) players make up the majority of highschool wrestling teams. Most highschool male gridiron football players are also highschool wrestlers.

I know that highschool gridiron football teams are always big bullies. It's not a stereotype. It's a fact to the whole USA. Those who play highschool American Football often make up the majority of bullies in the USA and are often the worst of the worst in USA bullying.

Highschool gridiron footballers don't just target nerds. They target other "losers" and outcasts such as goths, blind kids, poor kids, etc. They aren't bullies because of nerds. They are bullies because they are bullies. Without nerds, they'll still be bullies and just find other targets.

There's a truth to the stereotype and the cliche entertainment media depiction of highschool gridiron football teams always being the bullies to nerds.

I just watched a movie called Bomb City. It was based on a real-life conflict between punk rockers and highschool gridiron football players. The conflict was started due to highschool gridiron football players' bigotry towards punk rockers in general. The footballers often bullied the punk rockers. The conflict got so bad that it often lead to physical fights. But it didn't there. What happened is that a punk rocker by the name of Brian Deneke was ran over to death by the highschool gridiron football player Dustin Camp. Dustin Camp ran him over by using his caddy.

Here is a link to the movie's trailer:

Here below is a link to the movie. It's free to watch.

Also, here is a link to the real-life incident regarding the case of Brian Deneke and Dustin Camp:

_______

I am not a member of the punk rock subculture but the thought of this conflict scares me.

Join the team and just keep an eye out for your people on the team.  If you like the sport, it won’t matter.  You may encounter some dbags, but you may also meet some of the best friends kf your life.

Wrestling 100% changed my life in the best way possible.  Wrestling gave me college options I wouldn’t have, and thanks to wrestling I have been able to spend a decade living around the world, I speak new languages(mandarin and cantonese, nerdy enough?), and I have made hundreds of friends and met thousands of awesome people.

You never know where it will take you, but it is invariably to a good place.  You will meet great friends, just enjoy the friends and ignore the dbags.

Also, wrestlers don’t like to admit it, but there are more people like me and knownothing than not.  Wrestling is too all consuming and immersive to just shut that switch off.
