Does having to fill out a waiver for review  imply that he does not have eligibility? Otherwise wouldn't the NCAA already know whether he is eligible and was granted a med shirt year for 2021?

He wrestled all year without any issue and this somehow being overlooked.  The FRL podcast drops Monday when they discuss it.  The light bulb goes on & now he's potentially getting bumped from the tournament.  You can't make this up.

Doesn't it feel like a failing of whoever handles rules interpretation for Little Rock?

There are still a bunch of people on this, and other message boards, who get confused about the free year. I constantly see people listing a wrestlers years and putting "free COVID year" for whatever the last year in the list is. They miss the subtlety that only the 2020-2021 season was the free COVID year. I could easily imagine a scenario where an admin at the school misinterpreted that too.

As for the conference, I can imagine they trust the individual schools to get the rules right. If they had to audit every decision made by the schools then they would need a huge enforcement staff of their own. But why replicate that task, and absorb that duplicate cost? Instead, rely on educating the existing staffs at the schools. And since every other staff at every other school appears to have gotten this right, I do not think blame should be at the conference level.

Crazy no one noticed this until Flo brought it up, not saying it’s their fault, just that they’re the only ones that dug deep enough

he’ll probably be in the bracket and if the Rider alternate gets the nod, everyone gets bumped up behind the LR wrestler

This is on the coaching staff. If they had no idea his eligibility was questionable (or straight up exhausted), they are idiots. If they knew, then they should have tried to clear up things with the NCAA long ago. But given he already competed in four conference tournaments prior to this year and didn't use the "free year" there is no argument to be made.

i posted a summation on twitter but i forgot to mention that (and i learned this during the last two days) every compliance department produces an 'eligibility report' a couple times a year. so this would have been vetted.

obviously vetted incorrectly in this case, i guess. 

seems pretty obvious that they misapplied the Covid 'free year' rule.

Do you have an opinion on the NCAA not giving the bid to the Pac 12 kid who will retroactively be the Pac 12 champ at 174?

I’d have to imagine Little Rock did something to check his eligibility earlier in the year, no?

He never even qualified for NCAA’s before this year.  I say let him wrestle.  It’s a good argument against the people saying “the 6th year guys never seem to pan out”…

That’s really ***ducking** stupid if they do that to this kid.  Guys have been enrolled in college for practically a decade amongst the various ways other people have said.  People also stay back in school as far back as middle school.  We’re really going to begrudge a kid a year even though the same and more has been awarded to active wrestlers?

This is the first time this kid qualified for nationals too.

I’m not even going to say the ncaa made the error, bc this isn’t an error.  He was enrolled in college during covid, jtfc isn’t that enough to say he’s had enough taken from him already?

Same question I had... if he was ineligible for the NCAA he was ineligible all season. OSU lost by 4 points to LR at the Pac12.

Yeah this wouldn’t even really open that much can of worms.  It basically would only apply to people that redshirted during the “free year,” which was very few people…because it was a free year.
