This would make no sense unless someone(s) else is leaving

If this is true, that’s ridiculous…. Didn’t he get money to stay? Then he goes in the portal?

Stand by my statement.  I don’t see how this happens without Ryder or Haines leaving

I'm not questioning them leaving.... but it's reported Welsh is going to PSU.

Edit: And I agree, someone is probably leaving. I am guessing Ryder - too good to ride the bench. Unless Welsh comes in and Ryder hammers him...that would be a fun portal story.

TBH I feel like Welsh is kinda overrated.  I know he was a freshman finalist but he didn’t really have many big wins.  I feel like he’s more of a 4th/5th type guy.  Which would make him the weak link at PSU.

I could be wrong but Rocco Welsh seems to be a higher pedigree talent than Zack Ryder (all due respect to Ryder).  Who is Penn State to refuse an upgrade even at a position of strength?

Yeah idk why people are so shocked by this. PSU has showed before they have no qualms about recruiting over the guys they already have.

Ryder has significantly better international results. 3x world medalist.

Well are they paying him?

I think that Levi would have to transfer out right? There’s no chance that he will willingly take a redshirt and Ryder can’t ride the bench next season.

I guess Haines only has one more year.  Maybe Ryder gets “injured” in the wrestleoff and gets a medical like Nagao

If it's PSU, I have a hard time believing he was actively recruited.  Because why?  IMO it's a toss-up with him and Ryder.  Welsh was a runner-up, but he made the finals with SV wins over Wolak and Ruth. Ryder's a U20 world medalist (making the world team by beating Arnold, Ruiz, Norman and others) and had an undefeated redshirt season (wins over Stewart, Parker, Cartagena, Soldano).  If Welsh is an upgrade it's by the thinnest of margins. Ryder's also Duke's HS teammate, and I doubt they want to tick off Duke.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt this is "recruiting over" so much as he wants to come to PSU, and it isn't the coaches place to say "no, you aren't welcome."  Fact is, kids just want to go to PSU to get better and win stuff.

Lame for Welsh to go to PSU. What the actual f. No more parity in this sport.

Interesting to me that people seem concerned about the portal hurting the small schools, yet most of the big names in the portal are from top 10-20 teams
