Does anyone think this should have been a best of 3? Does it change the result? Do you think the athletes would have agreed? @Jon_Kozak Im interested in your opinion for obvious reasons.

Lee did not give up weight - they were about a pound apart at weigh-ins and Ono didn't appear sucked down. If anything, Lee was close to match weight.

The real question is what does Ono normally weigh and accordingly, has he made any sort of long-term descent down to his 57kg goal or a quick weight cut for last night to get to a catch-weight? I highly doubt that info is going to leak out, simply a fair question to ask. Because if he won 61 while walking around at 59 when the comp was 65+ then yeeeesh!

I may be miss remembering but I think he walks around at like 63-64kg, I would assume once he gets close to a competition he barely cuts anything for 61kg.

He does not walk around at 59.  He recently posted a body comp analysis on a social media story and he was significantly heavier.  I'll see if I can try to locate this discussion.

My guess is Ono was quite a bit heavier than Lee ay match time, also.

Spencer is statically strong in his upper body, but nobody on earth has every accused him of being explosive, and that's what Ono did to him, especially hips down.  You don't ever want to give spencer the opportunity to use his gorilla grip on you, but strength is only as strong as its foundation.

Spencer has small very injured legs.  Japanese wrestlers, the men in particular, are built like brick *I poop my pants, don't laugh at me*houses in the legs across the board.

Ono got hip to hip with spencer and overpowered him laterally.  Getting pushed laterally is unfortunately not aided by being good at pullups.

Spencer has very strong legs and has been accused of being pretty quick, too.

Everyone says Spencer Lee is incredibly strong for his size. Very well respected wrestlers predicted he could overpower Ono. They said Ono is explosive and fearless.

  • Stevan Micic said how powerful Spencer is and that he might have the advantage as he doesn't have to cut weight.
  • Zain Retherford said Lee likely has the power advantage as the weight cut would sap some of Ono's strength and energy.
  • Jason Nolf predicted Spencer would be much more powerful.

Dismissing it as "no duh, Ono weighs 1 lb more, do you watch any international competition?!" is asinine.

I'm sure this was included to make your point, but do you not see the immense difference in muscular development between these two sets of legs?

You literally said "small" legs.  I would think his legs are thicker than all but a few 125s.  Yes, Ono's are bigger.  Spencer's are by no means small.  They are also very strong, enabling him to wrestle with torn ACLs.

The event’s card featured International wrestlers, former collegiate champions, and local high school athletes. (Nick Rohlman/The Gazette)Yeah! Really "small" legs! 🤡

Are you trolling or what? There is not an "immense difference" and I wouldn't even argue it leans Ono's way.

Spencer looks like the bigger guy here.

In what circumstance outside of picking a rep at OTT or Final X do you get to wrestle a best of 3? The Olympics aren't decided by a best of three, why would a random exhibition?

I don't have time to teach you anatomy and physiology, there is a tremendous difference there.

I'm sure spenser has strong legs compared to the average person, but this is an entirely relativistic sport.  They are obviously quite weak compared to Ono's.

Ono overpowered spenser, and he did it with his legs.

r/wrestling - Masanosuke Ono posted his body analytics

Hmm so I’d guess him and Lee might be around the same size.

64kg/141 seems like a good walk around weight to wrestle 133 next year
