I first read this morning that Taylor and Sadulaev were on the same side of the bracket to meet in the semis. Hours later the rumor is that they’re redrawing the brackets. Going to be fun to watch either way!

They remade them and now they are facing round 1.

Why did they redraw them? I heard Ghasempour is on the same side as well. Wild.

61kg

Uguev vs Ono first round 🔥

Bottom side is def tougher for Vito. Maybe Tuskaev in the quarters and should be a tough semi for him likely against the winner of Uguev vs Ono.

70kg

Green has as good of a quarter draw as could be expected but will likely hit Ramazanov or Kudiev in the semis.

79kg

Burroughs should have Nokhodi in the quarterfinals; maybe Kentchadze or Takahashi in the semis.

92kg

Taylor vs Sadulaev first round 🔥

And of course Ghasempour is on the same side so the top-side semi will be the finals in all but name.

---

While I'm glad we'll get to see the Taylor vs Sadulaev matchup, this is once again proof that our sport at the highest levels has clown-level rules when it comes to seeding. I know UWW wants to promote their ranking series events, but these types of lopsided brackets are just laughable for any serious sporting organization. They need to add a "common sense" clause or something to the seeding criteria.

Absolutely agree. There’s a ton of top talent that just doesn’t do the ranking series events and we end up with situations like this. One of these 3 at 92kg that are considered title contenders won’t medal now.

I know there’s always contention when the brackets come out for NCAAs on seeding, but it does by and large make sense based on months of matches and similar competition over the course of the season. Not a 1:1 comparison, but the UWW brackets can be really head scratching sometimes. I don’t know how you implement common sense, but this is clearly lacking it.

Regardless, at the end of the day I’m looking forward to seeing the top guys in the sport duke it out.

Yes, the DT-Sadulaev matchup is one of the best in freestyle history, so you at least separate them on opposite sides of the bracket to build interest and enthusiasm for a potential championship final.  And while we will get the match, it is first round and then excitement wanes.  What are the chances of them drawing each other?  I haven't done the math, but it is probably less than 5%.  UWW is arguably better at corruption than building interest in the sport.   And American audiences will need to get up or stay awake between 4:30 and 5:30 AM to watch.   Set your alarms now, however.

It's an intriguing match up, but it isn't in an Olympic weight.   Taylor lost at 86 kg while Saduleav was banned at 97 kg.

It's a great match up, but it's not one of the best match ups in freestyle history.

Do the competitors know the rules. Yes.  Do they follow them (ranking wise) no.

Boy do we complain about it.

rough math …. The  top 3 unseeded competitors falling on same side of the bracket is roughly 12.5%    It Isn’t that crazy

I think it’s approx 1.8 to draw together.   Doesn’t matter much.  Once all 3 same side.  One doesn’t get out right ?  You’ll meet somewhere.

We know how that got to this weight and point.   If you don't think it is still one of the best matchups in freestyle history, please tell us one that supersedes a 7 time World and Olympic Champion (2 Olympic Golds and 5 World titles) vs. a 4 time World and Olympic Champion (not to mention that they also both have a silver at Worlds).

This isn't that difficult. Just use regular brackets and have full wrestle backs problem is solved. But that is using common sense. But the UWW doesn't have any common sense.

Yes, that would be a much better and much fairer process and one that doesn't lead to the absurdity of two bronze medalists who don't wrestle each other.
