Happy October everyone.  The weather is cooling down, the kids are back in school, and that means that preseason workouts are well underway, with the season just around the corner.  If you are all interested I would love to use this thread to post about 2024 college wrestle offs.  Best matchups, dates of competitions, streaming opportunities, results, etc.

If there is already an older thread dedicated to this, please forgive me and I can delete this topic immediately.  Just trying to stay ahead of the game for the 2024 season!

Happy posting, ya'll!

I think I am most interested in Cannon vs D'emilio at 149 for ohio state and then Ive heard Tagen is going up so Tagen vs Young for okie state. Also, Facundo vs Kasak vs Sealey and or Facundo vs Haines vs Ryder for PSU.

Cornell at 141/149:  Vince Cornella (WS#15 @141, 2023 EIWA Champion, 2xNQ, 34-15 record) vs. Ethan Fernandez (WS#14 @149, 1xNQ, 34-14 record) vs Josh Saunders (U23 champion, beat Fernandez last November).  Not sure if Saunders will go up or down (or nowhere).

Always been a big fan of Saunders.  I was really hoping he would get in to the lineup.

It appears that Iowa State has actual wrestleoffs, still.

Last year Echemendia defeated Swiderski, and Echemendia got the nod at 149lbs until he dropped to 141lbs.

This year, they have said there are wrestleoffs at several weights.

I'm interested to see what's going to happen with Oklahoma state's Cael Hughes?  As an undefeated High School wrestler, I would sure think it hurts Okie State to not have him in the lineup somewhere!

Lots of schools still have wrestle-offs and they are one factor, not necessarily THE factor, in determining starters.  Some schools make up a wrestle-off at the end of a season in order to get a person close to them (that can't make weight all year) into the starting lineup without even looking at the full body of work. Just sayin.

Ohio State usually makes the wrestle-offs a big event; streaming and opening it up to the public.

And in the past only an event....

Intriguing, Cornella seems like he had all the tools to be a top 5 type guy, but mentally didn't seem to put it together.

OK State potential matchups:

133: Hughes vs. Witcraft/McComas

141: Tagen vs. Hughes

149: Tagen vs. Young

157: Travis v. Fish

197: Surber vs. Merrill

All of these really depend on who redshirts and what weight guys intend to go. I wouldn't be surprised if Travis goes down to 149 and challenges.

My take:

133 - Witcraft VS McComas
141 - Hughes, Young or Jamison could go down if they lose the wrestleoff up at 149
149 - Jamison VS Young
157 - Fish VS Teague (If Fish loses, he Redshirts), Young could go up if he loses to Jamison
197 - Surber VS Merrill (Merrill could redshirt, if he loses)

No way Young can go down to 141, I say "turdbiscuits!"

I have a hard time disagreeing to this.  The lone exception is that Young might beat a depleted Fish at 157lbs (he hasn't been 157 or lower since his Soph season in High School.

If Young has actually grown into the weight then he could be a problem for Fish. He has a lot of nice career wins but all at 141 with the exception of a couple decent wins at 149 last year.

Their best lineup would be Ech murdering himself for one more year, Paniro going 149 and chittum or casey going 157 I think that team could contend for a trophy.

I have a hard time seeing Swiderski happy sitting on the sidelines.

I don't love this scenario, Witcraft would be the weakest link in the starting lineup.  I have always thought of him as just a fill in guy (average at best).   I wish Hughes was able to make 133, so that there would be less "jockying for position" in the 141 and 149 weight classes. I would love to know how J.J. McComas does against Witcraft in the wrestling room?

I would not be surprised to hear of McComas competing with Witcraft and possibly even beating him right now but I think he could benefit from a redshirt. Cael Hughes is a huge recruit for the Cowboys. In my opinion it is more important to get Hughes at his ideal weight.
