Who are the wrestlers who officially or unofficially lead to significant rule changes?

I can think of:

  • Logan Stieber - how takedowns are called due to his finals match with Jordan Oliver

  • Dean Heil - neutral danger rule due to his habit of rolling on his back (match with Jimmy Gullibon comes to mind)

Who else?

Sta(l)rocci with the ankle ride.

Interesting that instead of hooking the ankle, the Penn State gents simply just go higher on the leg now (it seems?)?

Quick evolution.  Still the most dominant man in NCAA D1 Wrestling.

Is hooking the ankle against the rules now?  I must have missed that.

Supposed to be called stalling, in some form now.

Carlton Hasselrig - no more D2/D3 wrestlers in D1 NCAA’s

I think this was an "all-sports thing."  I'd be curious if it was allowed in other individual sports.

I thought it was allowed in lacrosse, but apparently not.

Every good high school and college wrestler from the 90’s to the late 2000’s, maybe early 2010’s, but particularly those who made it far in the ncaa tournament with a standup and zero offense

-the dropdown to a single stalling count rule, best rule change in my lifetime

I think Bryan Snyder, out of bounds rule. VS T.J. Williams at NCAA'S, he stepped one, half foot on line with other foot in, on a takedown, was called out of bounds, next year changed.

The Iranian that Kolat wrestled who kept untying his shoes, which led to the rule that laces must be taped.

As a fan, the Dean Heil rule is the best change in the last 20 years.

Carl - no more national duals

One of the biggest misconceptions in all of college wrestling that Cael shoulders all the blame for this.  Even @Interviewed_at_Weehawkenwould have to begrudgingly agree

The legs in headlock stall ride by Chris Perry. Now it is a count for a stall.

Seems Oklahoma State wrestlers are the ones involved in most of these changes.

It's shocking how much the rule affected Heil.  His performance really cratered after he was no longer allowed to spend half the match rolling on his own back.

Can you explain to a new fan what the story is here?

2012 the coaches came shy of a 2/3 majority vote to implement a National Dual to crown a team champ.  I believe the 2 options were one tournament to decide it all or another option was a hybrid where a team's dual tournament placement would count towards the total score during the tournament in March.  There are coaches that have been against or complained about every proposal but for some reason Cael takes all the blame

I don't think any other sports had this rule.  Lacrosse, like wrestling and ice hockey, have a bunch of non-D1 schools that compete in D1 in just one sport. Johns Hopkins is a D3 school who at one point had one of the best lacrosse programs in the country. Multiple non D1 schools have won NCAA D1 championships in hockey.

Hobart was a great D3 lax program.  St. Lawrence and Union are D3 schools who have competed and won at the D1 level.  Has RPI ever won a hockey title?

One of my training partners was amongst the last lower division guys to qualify for D1, so at the time it seemed like something that happened all the time in college sports.  That may have been why I thought that. (and Haselrig was in our conference)

Wright from PSU back in 2000-2001 choked out 2 Lehigh wrestlers that year (Bernholz/Cote) both with Fred Ambrose as ref. Strobel sent in the Bernholz video. Although it wasn't technically a rule change it was looked at after that. I think Wright lost his next 10(?) bouts.

How many did Ron Wright from Sacred Heart choke out?
