Thats news to me. I guess I can’t think of a time that it has happened.

It has to do with the "midpoint" of the season, wherever that is for wrestling.  When I coached college wrestling twenty five years ago, we had a kid who told us he wanted to take a med shirt after his knee injury had become unbearable during NWCA National Duals.  The only problem: wrestling in the Duals put him over the threshold.  The date at the time was January 19, 2002.

If anything, rules have gotten way more lenient.  I don't think a lot of requests are turned down by the NCAA.  I know that AJ Ferrari thinks he can get one for his second semester car crash.

In the case of Alvan, he wrestled on Feb 11…that’s definitely past the midpoint

But they rarely say "no" to these things these days.  In fact there is a lawsuit where a basketball player returned from injury and is suing the NCAA over the medical redshirt rules.

Things are just going to get more and more lenient...

I wouldn’t be surprised if Mullen or Sasso decided to leave on their own . Both are halfway thru their careers and haven’t sniffed the podium after being major recruits

Mullen was #1 at his weight and #8 or #9 overall in his class and he got bonused by 4 different guys this year

Sasso went 1-2 as the 4 seed a year after he burned a whole year of eligibility not even cracking the line up last season.

Hunter Catka just had his best finish after leaving Vtech after 5 years

Sasso was injured he didn't get beat out and he's getting that year back. Catka had a bloodround finish at VT. I do agree that VT has some issues coaching the upper weights. But who is out there to bring in from a coaching standpoint?

I’m sure there is an ncaa champ out there looking for a job that can help these big guys. No offense to Jared Haught but he isn’t getting it done

What did Sasso hurt last year ? I stayed in the same hotel in Philly for ncaas last year and talked to him for a few minutes and he was wrestling and messing around with guys in the elevator and lobby, not something someone with a major injury would be doing. Sasso wrestled into January last year but you guys were using smith in dual meets all the way back in Nov. ( Smiths first 2 dual matches last year he beat Sinclair from Missouri and Poznanski from Rutgers both AAs)

Jimmy Mullen was the greatest heavyweight in NJ history, he was better then Zach Rey who became ncaa champ, better then Jimmy Lawson who took 4 years off of wrestling and still AAed in college and now he’s maybe at best a top 15 guy and not only has he not gotten better he’s actually regressed and is losing to guys he beat in high school, if anyone needs a change of scenery or some new coaches it’s him.

NCAA wrestling is really, really hard. Ask Dom Serrano.

I'm all ears, I'd love some improvement in the upper weights. Sasso was injured in November and tried to make a comeback in January but it didn't work out. Shoulder I believe. I love Andy Smith as much as the next guy but a healthy Sasso is simply more talented. Sasso has better wins with Posada, Merrill, Novak, and Stout just inconsistent.

I'm with you on Mullen's development, comparing it to HS is vastly different though. He went from being the biggest guy in high school and still being as agile if not more than his opponents to wrestling grown men. His shot selection is still that of a guy who's just physically better than the guy across from him. This is something that should have been worked on by now though, I agree Haught's results aren't great. Whether it's bringing in an RTC guy or an upper weight coach I'm good with it just don't know anybody with a desire to coach who fits the mold.

Something to keep in mind with Stanford and the Ivy Leagues is they don’t transfer until they get a degree

Max Dean the exception that proves the rule.

Matthew lopes: he is very good, and with Crookham coming back and Stanich at 141 I do not see a world where he makes the linup I think he has outgrown 125 (if I am incorrect about this watch out for him)

Crookham was injured pretty late in the season; there's a pretty good chance he misses all of 26-27, leaving the weight open for Lopes.

I'm not 100% sure on Alvan. No postseason as a freshman.  Did three postseasons total.  His last match he wrestled as a first year was on Feb. 11.  With the way they hand out med shirts these days, he might be able to finagle a decent payday from an Iowa or Michigan. (How is Michigan looking at 165 next year?)

His matches as a freshman were either in opens or in extra countable matches.  His Ivy eligibility is probably gone, but the NCAA may allow him to compete next year.

Medical redshirt guidelines:

The injury or illness must be season-ending.

The injury must occur in the first half of the season.

The athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season’s competitions (rounded up when necessary).

Documentation from a qualified medical professional is required.

Yea that’s great we all should know that and all but Dom Serrano wasn’t considered a generational talent like Mullen. Jimmy Mullen is one of the few recruits that Cael went all in on and didn’t get and now he looks worse year 2 then year 1.

Virginia tech seems to have the money nowadays they need to go out and get someone like they did with Tanelli just for the upper weights now. Nebraska went out and stole Tervel away and it’s worked wonders for them.

Yea Mullen just seems like he’s diving in randomly half the time. He used to be a quality mat wrestler too and that seemingly disappeared. It’s probably a lot on the mental side too bc he hasn’t had the success he expected. I really think he needs a fresh start which sucks I was rooting for him to be a hammer at Vtech. Maybe trying football and wrestling that one year really hampered his development

Now that Reader announced he is leaving UW, If I'm Amos, I take a page out of DJs book and head to Stillwater for my senior year. Good 1 year fill in so they can bulk up Ross, or head to Ann Arbor.

I can see Zan hitting the road too, head back to Mizzou or Minnesota/Nebraska/Illinois

Things are not bright in Madison

Zan would fit in well with Minnesota, they have been down at that weight this year. However, could cause a log jam with recruits they have coming the next two years.

With Fugitt having two years left, I actually think that’s perfect. Both Friederichs will be 125 for at least a couple years imo. Who knows how much Drake Vombaur will grow, and I don’t see either Trey Beissel or Mason Carlson being ready to start within two years.

Is Miller to VT already understood? Just because it worked for Bassett doesn’t mean it has to for him, correct?

He's publicly committed and trains at the RTC pretty often...

Yeah if we could go out and steal Kollin Moore from OSU I'd be cool with it. I think it is a lot on the mental side with Mullen, which does make me think he could flip a switch but also to your point these situations often require a fresh start.

I don't see it happening this year though, he does really like Blacksburg. Hopefully he gets a little stronger in the offseason and figures out his offense. Even though he does take wild ill-advised shots I view that as more fixable than a guy who just won't shoot.
