Iowa board reporting Alirez incoming
billyhoyle replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Is it even fun to root for your team when they are mainly transfers and get worse while at the school? -
Did you just come from the personal finance subreddit?

UFC is owned by the same parent company as WWE, and at this point, UFC is more about entertainment than actual athletics/competition. It would have made zero sense to keep him hidden for three years and then have him try UFC.

What is next for everyone at Sunkist
billyhoyle replied to juniorvarsity's topic in International Wrestling
End of an era. We are lucky with what Art Martori invested into the sport, especially before the RTC model took shape and it seemed like all the top guys were relying on Sunkist. Not to mention saving the ASU program. A true friend of the sport and USA wrestling. -
David Taylor to Coach Oklahoma State???
billyhoyle replied to PortaJohn's topic in College Wrestling
This raises questions about what CS was promised. Why would he leave UNC to OKState unless he was promised the job? Are they really going back on that? -
For NCAA athletics you could say that a generational talent is one that comes along once every 5 years because that’s the length of a single ncaa athletic generation. If you want to talk about in terms of the sport as a whole I’d say it’s every 10-20 years. So Gable, Smith, Burroughs.

Jewish parents are going to be thrilled if their kids get into Columbia. Because of that 22% population in the student body, it’s a much more welcoming environment than most other universities. The protests will be over soon.

Penn State fans booing Jordan Burroughs
billyhoyle replied to Dark Energy's topic in International Wrestling
What a loser. PSU fans that I know aren’t like that. -
Not if they keep naming buildings after donors and giving their kids/grandkids admission into the university for donating. I think they will be able to-there are so few jobs and tons of talent at the assistant coaching level.
-
I guarantee you that the prestige Columbia has isn't going to transfer to Liberty U. All the top students will still want to go there, even if people who cable news don't understand. They also won't be any worse than they currently are at wrestling because of protests. And they will find another wrestling coach that's as good as who they previously had, because unfortunately there aren't many D1 coaching jobs.

GeoComply provides geolocation software to major sportsbooks to monitor users. The lawsuit notes that when users register with online betting companies, they "consent to share their location data with GeoComply, who in turn provides this data back to the companies." Written policies from DraftKings and FanDuel, the two online sportsbooks the athletes used, tell users the companies may disclose personally identifying information to law enforcement. So they agreed to this by using the betting software? The lawsuit alleges DCI agents told the athletes they were not the targets of the investigation but rather were assisting in an inquiry of sports betting companies. Police lying to criminal suspects-nothing new there.

There won't be a drop in applications for the Ivies. You are talking about a couple hundred people at most out of 36,000 students at Columbia. Most students there aren't protesting and are focusing on computer science, economics, or they're premed/prelaw. And with their free time, they're getting drunk. People who get their idea about what these colleges are like from the news want to hear a certain perspective. Do you really think there will be any less interest in a college that is one of the top 10-20 in the country, has incredible financial aid, and is located in NYC? All because there were protests that will have been forgotten about in the news cycle by the time application season comes along? By the time college applications start-up, the news will have some other "crisis" to focus on. The coaching job at Columbia is just as good as it was a month ago, which isn't really that great of a job.

Tom Ryan Involved In Automobile Accident
billyhoyle replied to RandolphTJones's topic in College Wrestling
Hopefully he makes a full recovery. He has repeatedly had to deal with tragedy and challenging circumstances throughout his life (of course his own family, but also paddock and recently sasso) and still has such a positive/uplifting perspective on life. He’s a great voice and leader in the sport. An update: https://x.com/nickcorey167/status/1783170329218560381 -
This won’t be an issue. It’s in the Ivy League and the closest university in the country to Zabar’s.

This could be a Rob Koll-like situation where he figured out after 8 years that housing is expensive in Manhattan.

Penn State fans booing Jordan Burroughs
billyhoyle replied to Dark Energy's topic in International Wrestling
If they just booed that head push that’s fine, but to actually boo JB is classless and shows you aren’t a fun of USA wrestling. -
JB in attendance at Wrestlemania
billyhoyle replied to BIGTENFANBOY's topic in International Wrestling
What's up with the fight pose? He should have gotten into a stance or maybe thrown in a sprawl. -
I agree there is no chance wrestling will become as popular as women’s basketball is now. But not too long ago, WBB was only maybe 2-3 times more watched than wrestling. Now 18.7 million tuned into the finals (compared to 400 to 500k for wrestling). If you told me that would happen 15 years ago, I’d say you’re crazy. We are headed in the wrong direction viewership wise and nobody is doing anything about it.
-
Except the success this year was about individual superstars/rivalries and not the teams themselves. People aren’t watching because they like the Hawkeyes. So I don’t think it holds in this case.

Sadulaev ruled ineligible to compete by UWW panel
billyhoyle replied to Takuto_Otoguro's topic in International Wrestling
This is such a specious line of thinking. Israel was the victim of terrorist act. You can argue that their response has been over the top, but there's no argument against them being justified to respond. Russia is invading a neighbor, and Sadulaev is encouraging it/using his platform to support it. What is America doing that comes even close to this? Your post completely ignores that in this case, Russia (and Hamas) were the initial aggressors. Why some people blame the U.S. for this, I don't know. Sadulaev has no excuse for his actions-plenty of Russian athletes are keeping quiet or even opposed to the war. If anything he may be doing this so that he doesn't have to compete in the Olympics and lose. Instead, he can use the excuse that he was prevented from competing.
