Dude...I am not that difficult(despite all evidence to the contrary)...I will call you want you want to be called. If Latino people ask me to call them LatinX, I'll do so. I WON'T do it because Art Majors of America united and decided that's what it'll be.
-
Sure...but if you're getting your ass kicked every year because the other schools are out recruiting you, or taking your most talented Wrestlers...especially a school like Minnesota that had been a top ~5 program for so long, then your contract may not be tied to NIL...but your job may be.
-
Hell yeah! The great equalizer. Scouting, player development...and the best manager in baseball!

That's how small market teams have to operate. There's some measure of revenue sharing, but it's a joke. The Dodgers make 300M a year on their TV deal, the...Brewer make 30. The Yankees make more than that. The As spent 90M a couple years ago because they were good. Last year, they traded their two best players and they had no reason to spend...because they couldn't spend their way to being competitive. They just make a few hundred million less in revenue than the top market teams. They are excessively cheap, but being as the As still play in a stadium that gets flooded with raw sewage. In any event, the point was they at least try. There's no way to make things truly...even. There's always going to be teams or programs with just huge built in advantages.
-
And...we're saying this is a BAD thing?
-
I've been to hundreds of tournaments, probably 75 out of state. The people are almost always great. If you know your way around, I'm sure Tulsa is lovely. The Wrestling...always great. For me it was just about getting there and where to stay once I did. That's what made it too difficult for me to make it.

Probably close to a 3rd Gold if Schulz doesn't beat Jim Zalesky out at 74KG. I think Goldman was also a runner up at the trials in '88...and won a Jr World Title. Not really relevant, but 5 Wrestlers who were Olympic caliber Wrestlers on one team, that's pretty wild.
-
The New York Mets will spend 500 MILLION more than the Oakland Athletics this upcoming season, just on players salaries...but your point stands. They at least try in the NFL(thanks to Wellington Mara who probably cost his family tens of billions of dollars) and the NBA makes a ton of money in revenue sharing as well(as long as nobody says Taiwan... But yes, at least the professional leagues make an attempt. But they at least are all under one unified group of owners. The NCAA didn't want any players compensated and they have no saying over that. The transfer portal was hurting athletes and that was just a good idea, but you combine the two and it's kinda chaos. I think this is going to all going to kinda settle down a bit though. I wasn't begging for it, but I wasn't necessarily opposed. I did see how if you were a Football player for example...and you went to play for Lincoln Riley because of the way he develops QBs, then he bails to USC and you're a Heisman quality QB who's almost certainly going to be the #1 pick in the 2024 draft, you should be able to leave without penalty.

And the rest is some variation of Anderson/Andersen, or Jacobson/Jakobson vet du ikke!
-
With respect, us white liberals will be the ones who determine what is racially offensive. I THOUGHT we'd already established this when we decided "LatinX" was a thing?
-
You can be cognizant of what you're saying and what some may find offensive...without being ridiculous. A literal lashing never cross my mind there. I also tend of think of RBY as being Latino, but...it really just sounded like a way of saying "ass-whooping."

Gable Steveson returning to wrestling

Other than Cornell or over these Covid years, very rarely that I recall. It generally seemed to be highly touted recruits who didn't have success, took time off and came back. Can't think of a NC who did it, but...how often has a guy had an extra year to make that decision? -
Ok, so that fits with what I've heard. I just saw that he was a 220 and...figured he'd rather grow into HWT, but I know he's close with Hopke, so really feels like UM is the leader and PSU is 2nd. Though he's saying the right things about UW as a Wisconsin prep athlete. Just be surprising to see UM lose their connection to Pinnacle to UW. And what a fix Hopke would be to that "hole" Minnesota has!
-
I'd juuuust about rule Wisconsin out based on this. It's flimsy, but Fickel...the FB coach(and arguably the best HWT in Ohio HS History) has told other recruits they can Wrestle, namely Dillan Johnson, the #1 ranked HWT(at least according to one ranking, I thought Mullens was the consensus #1). I guess Bono would probably prefer he just Wrestle, but I would think he'd be open to letting a talent like Hopke do both. You don't draw a line in the sand if you're Wisconsin Wrestling, you do whatever you can. Hopke's the type of kid who could come in, RS in Football, come into the Wresting season and probably AA as a Freshmen, or RS and contend for a NC as a Soph as he fills out. And at HWT, it's not like weight is an issue. As for who he has in the room, losing Trevor Branvold was a HUGE blow for the Badgers. I don't recall if he left when Davis did, but it doesn't matter. He was an outstanding coach and he'd be a great workout partner. The one thing that made me think Minnesota may be less likely was Gavin Nelson committing to UM, but I've been told -from a family friend of Hopke who's been told from Nelson he's planning on going 197...so take that for what very little it's worth. Not sure there's any team has a HWT in place that would make them NOT go after Hopke. I guess tOSU, OSU and Iowa would be the closest, but Keuter is a more highly regarded FB player and I suspect he'll focus on being an OLBer. And that's not through a friend of a friend of a cousin who's friend works at his favorite coffee place! ----I don't want to see this, I want to see someone contend with PSU, but with Kyle Snyder and even guys like Taylor, Varner...among others. I'd include Kerkvliet, but he seemed to have zero interest in Wrestling last year(just imagine if he had a motor like Cassioppi). Wisconsin and Minnesota both have had success with HWTs(one a TINNY bit more than the other, but UW has had a few AAs in recent history with Medberry a finalist, Hilger, Massey). But it's hard to argue against Penn State for really any Wrestler if you're looking at the best possible training partners and international success...

Gable Steveson returning to wrestling
scourge165 replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
Again...he's talked about how he loves performing in front of large groups. Also, people are quick to forget how dominant Wrestlers were and they tend to just count their titles. If he's back and he has a year, why not? -
Where will AJ and Anthony Ferrari end up?
scourge165 replied to AOCStallsLikeAMug's topic in College Wrestling
I think he can(not that he will necessarily). And I think Chittum would potentially go 149. -
No question. Not sure the ref realized what happened though. It happened quick.
-
Eh, fair enough. I'm just saying they weren't all 1 point matches and I think there's a little revisionist history after just kinda getting by for his 4th vs Van Ness and Murin. He wasn't Spencer Lee, but...I mean, two guys beat the man. I don't know what Dake's look like, but I suspect his was someone similar.
-
This was my first truck. 1994 Ford Bronco. Gramps sold it to me for $3000 after he had to stop driving, but he put ~40000 miles on it and it was his prized possession. He put the brush guard, some big ass tires(I don't think he had any lift kit on it, but he did drive it all around through the woods, so it had a winch). It was 10 years old by the time I got it, but it meant the world. Had to get out and manually put it into 4-wheel drive. Put over 200,000 Miles on it before she died on me...but she died JUST as I was pulling into work, so it was a good death! Gramps didn't have a lot of money, so that was a gift I really appreciated. But THIS...is my favorite vehicle to this day.
-
My thoughts exactly. I'm a little surprised he's a big fan of mat Wrestling and he didn't have Dake higher, but... that's @jdowntownlist. I do think people are slightly embellishing Yianni's style. He was pretty dominant. He had close matches with guys like McKenna, Sasso or the like, but he had ~50 pins or techs out of 115 matches(also just the 2 losses to Eierman and Gomez...but I get the point, Lee was a machine on top.
-
No, it wasn't. He was unattached at the Edinboro Open, the first 5 matches of that season. He first wrestled the 8th vs Columbia and then wrestled Cornell on the 9th, weighing in back to back days for his first two matches of the year. So not his first, his second, the first weekend...the point remains. They wrestled twice and Richard didn't score an offensive point in either match. Kolodzik dominated the action and... And the familiarity comes into place because they're two guys...in the same conference and Kolodzik was a 3X AA at the time. Same as Brands and Starocci for example. I don't believe they've wrestled before.

Not A Peep! Got to Wrestle for the Love ❤️ of the sport!
scourge165 replied to Wrassler's topic in College Wrestling
No, I don't think you're wrong. A couple programs have a lot to offer in terms of crowd size, but the first College Wrestling match, I remember just...silence. My HS was about 10X more enthusiastic at that point. But that's on the schools to try and get students out for the matches, maybe give out free tickets if they're not selling enough. Just something so you don't feel like you're wrestling in an empty gym where you can hear everyone clear their throat... I envy the Iowa Wrestlers. That's the best environment to Wrestle...even if I think Iowa fans are a bit much at times! -
Yeah, they were not a power house. Still, it's cool to see schools on the level of Princeton have guys have that type of success. And they do have an elite recruit coming in as well as some other solid recruits.
-
This is not almost beating him. This is Kolodzik's first match being pulled from a RS and he was the clear aggressor and ONLY one actually attempting to score. This is akin to saying there's "no way" Starocci wins it this year if it hadn't been contest, or O'Connor wouldn't have won it because he lost to Ed Scott and then barely beat him. A Cornell guy who was familiar with him Wrestled him close. How many NCs had close matches with guys who were Wrestling to not get beat this past year or any given year? The only point I was initially making was that Princeton had a guy VERY recently who was competitive and a 3X AA in 3 trips, but people are really underselling him. He was a stud. He was the 2nd highest returner in that bracket and...AGAIN, he'd beaten the one guy who placed above him and had 4 or 5 wins vs the #1 seed(2 in 2019). The next point I'll make is the transitive property is not applicable to Wrestling. Because you Wrestled one guy close doesn't mean...really anything when predicting how that Wrestler would wrestle against other Wrestlers.
