  1. Agree. I can think of national champs from NY, NJ, MD, ND, SD, OH, CA, CO, and IL over the Gable era.
  2. Mike Coyle I guess is a tie for best ever from JMU as well, being one of only two AAs for the Dukes. Brian Kurlander being the other. Coyle's coach at JMU, also from Phillipsburg, was pretty good too. Bowyer made blood round twice when he wrestled for the Dukes.
  3. Charlie Heller was also in that bracket, better credentials than Potokar going 4-2-3 at NCAA. Hummel went 2-4-4 losing to Reiss in '80 NCAA final and Reiss was also in the '82 177 bracket. Hummel was also a very tough matchup for Mark Schultz. In '81 he beat Schultz in '81 Big 8 finals, then lost to him in NCAA semi in OT. In '82 he lost to Schultz in Big 8 final in OT, and then again in NCAA semi 2-1.
  4. Every guy Barry Davis beat in NCAA final eventually made a world freestyle final
  5. Not saying the best but for consideration as I have always been a fan of this group of wrestlers - 1989 126 bracket. 4 guys who won an NCAA title at some point - Jim Martin, Kendall Cross, Tom Brands, and Jason Kelber. Tom Brands with 3 titles. Those 4 alone also combined for 14 AA honors (pretty sure anyway). Tom Brands eventual World and Olympic champ, Cross eventual Olympic champ.
  6. Wrestling is 90% mental. The other half is physical.
  7. 1982 177 bracket had Schultz, Banach, Reiss who all had titles prior to that year
  8. this list is a mess. For example, anyone know John Smith from Ball State that went 6,2,1,1 at any combination of weight classes? I did find a John Smith from Ball State who placed 6th in 1973, I think the rest of those finishes are for some other guy named John Smith and they somehow got thrown together.
  9. Quentin Wright was seeded 9th and 2nd the two years he won it = 5.5 Mark Branch was seeded 1st one year and unseeded the other year he won. There were 12 seeds that year + 1 = 13, 29 in bracket = 21 for him if I am following your math for that year = average of 11 seed. anyone who won multiple with one being unseeded I think will skew this pretty heavily... I'd be surprised if there is a 3x champ with higher average that Rosholt.
  10. Larry Quisel wrestled 9 x in 1999. Lost in 1st rd, dropped into consolation pig tail, won 8 straight to get 3rd. So I guess max matches could have been 36 but a lot of craziness would have to line up just right.
  11. Can't look right now but think John Fisher/Michigan is close to that or maybe more. he did have a pig tail or two along the way to help with match count. mid to late 80s at 134.
