  1. not that these are the only types of sports fans, but two types at least : 1) I want my rival team to be terrible, so even when my team is mediocre we're at least better than they are. 2) I want my rival team to be good, and for my team to still kick their ass.
  2. not sure these two always wrestled like this, but this is one of the best pin or be pinned matches I've ever seen
  3. Chuck Toler, there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Had a HS team mate who wrestled him a few times in off season tournaments.
  4. Mean Gene the Pinning Machine would too!
  5. Joe wrestled as a true freshman, but then redshirted before winning his 3.
  6. fictional movie, but also seen in the excellent film Win Win
  7. are either Bouzakis or Mendez eligible for an Olympic RS? Assuming Bouzakis is in fact staying at Ohio State, this could help them sort out the 133 logjam, at least for one more year. I guess Mendez could just a take regular RS next year too.
  8. plenty of wrestlers have gone on to have SEAL careers. One of the most accomplished, on the mat and off, is Colin Kilrain. Colin Kilrain, Lehigh '82 - Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (eiwawrestling.org)
  9. So those two combined to go 13-3 at that tournament. That’s like a full regular season of wrestling for a lot of guys these days.
  10. also of note, in those 4 wins the next year he handed Iowa's TJ Williams his only career D1 loss. TJ went 1-3-1 at Iowa, with a record of 98-1.
  11. was asking more about this year and guys who transferred from programs that no longer exist, but yeah interesting paths guys end up taking for a variety of reasons.
  12. Sa'Derian Perry was an AA for EMU before transferring to ODU. Not sure where he ended up after ODU dropped.
  13. Kaden ‘Goodfella’ Gfeller
  14. Cardinale WVU and McGee Arizona St, both wrestled at ODU before the program was cut. I know I’m not the only one besides Jason Bryant that is still pissed off about that administrative decision. who else we got? Celebrate the wrestlers for finding a new home and excelling, and don’t forget the programs that have been lost.
  15. Larry Quisel (RIP) in ‘99. Lost 1st rd, dropped into pig tail consolation match, won 8 in a row to take 3rd.

    Yanni

my guesses on why Yianni is not getting as much attention as might be expected: As noted, another guy is also going for his 4th and he wrestles for Iowa In comparison to the other Cornell 4xer, Dake had the novelty of going for 4 in 4 different weight classes which got tons of attention Dake going for 4th v returning Hodge winner Taylor also was huge. Certain discussion boards were almost fixated on it. To a much lesser degree but something that might factor in more for future 4 timers...the more times it happens especially with less time in between occurrences, the less 'awe' factor there is.
  17. thought they were on same side of the bracket
  18. I think the most significant change regarding 1982 was that Mean Gene the Pinning Machine had used up his eligibility. '81 was fairly noteworthy with Mills, the Banach brothers, and Ricky Stewart all winning by fall in the finals. 2 of those falls were over future multi time World/Olympic Gold medalists as well (Stewart over Dave Schultz and Lou Banach pinning Bruce Baumgartner).
  19. I think Bowyer was non qualifier/qualifier/R12/R12. I know his senior year he lost in 2nd round to Bonomo who would win his 3rd title that tournament, and then in blood round lost to Palacio who had been runner-up to Bonomo the year before.
  20. Bet there's a fairly substantial number of guys who have been R12 twice. Two that come to mind quickly are Scott Justus from Va Tech and Jeff Peanut Bowyer from JMU.
  21. Fwiw rooting for them both. What the heck I’ll say one of them does AA this year….lean Murin.
  22. Unfortunately, yes. But I don’t know details so hoping for best.
  23. Know he defaulted out of Big 12 and received the at large. Didn’t wrestle a lot either in regular season. If he’s anywhere close to 100% he’s a very dangerous #28 seed. Hope he’s healthy enough to make a run.
