  1. I wish the Princeton alum had also noted John Orr as a two time finalist instead of only in '85.
  2. has it been since Mocco and Perry? edit - was typing and did not see post above asking same
  3. Not diminishing the ‘83 team’s dominance but the B1G performance needs a little context. This is before Penn State and others had joined. Iowa was the only B1G team in top 10 at NCAA tournament that year. There were no NCAA finalists from the B1G besides Iowa wrestlers, and only 6 other AAs.
  4. 1997 Iowa NCAA tournament performance is up there with ‘83. 8 AAs, the 2 that did not place made blood round. 5 champs, a 2nd, 2 placed 6th (I think that’s right on those last 2). They were NOT nearly as dominant at B1G though. Jesse Whitmer who would win NCAA only took 4th and Joe Williams who also would win NCAA took 2nd. They also lost dual vs Ok St (Lincoln McIlravt was not in line-up that day). But the NCAA tournament performance was one of the best ever.
  5. Don’t know if he’s a target or not but agree that he hopefully does not leave Tech. And keep the other Sooner Brewer around Blacksburg too.
  6. Recall the year they had 3 champs, scored over 100 points, and finished 3rd under Abel. Crazy. Great teams back then.
  7. Was Aaron Hoelker their last AA before the drop?
  8. @scourge165 if you haven't already read it, try to find a copy of A Season On The Mat. It covers Gable's last year at Iowa so lots of Iowa guys that you and others have mentioned on this thread are in there. Good read.
  9. SJS def had on his track shoes for much of that match, but that duck under to win it in OT was awesome.
  10. I've got Davis and Metcalf on my 1st team posted earlier. Agree Iowa, and PSU, could both piece together very tough 2nd teams as well. Agreed he obviously suffers because of the senior year 7th place after the horrible injury. Note also the guys he beat in finals for the 2 he got - Azevedo was a 3 x finalist, 1 time champ; Burley a 4 time finalist, 2 time champ.
  11. Great group. Love to see Krieger, a career 150 in the 80s make 141 with a 1 hour weigh-in though. He’d be a 157 today.
  12. Pretty sure that’s correct. Transferred in after LSU dropped I think.
  13. Ironside was great and as a 134 should be considered for the new adjusted weight of 141. Except Tom Brands as a 3x champ at 134 should be the 141. so maybe.... 125 Lee 133 Barry Davis 141 Tom Brands 149 Metcalf 157 Lincoln 165 Zalesky 174 Joe Williams 184 Campbell or Alger 197 Ed Banach Hvy Lou Banach
  14. Sandurski was legit, 3 world medals and an Olympic medal.
  15. This was a good one
  16. Schlatter’s freshman season was a thing of beauty. I think it’s up there as far as greatest freshman years ever.
  17. Pretty sure they did not wrestle until DS was a soph and JB was still a freshman. The 3-2 match was the year DS finished 3rd and Gillespie won it.
  18. I don’t think they wrestled that year. DS did beat JB 3-2 1st rd at NCAA the following year.
  19. I thought the other Steiner dropped to 134 so Lincoln had a spot at 142.
  20. I like Fix to Penn State mention on page 1.
  21. I like these discussions in that I learn something or am reminded how good some guys were that I had forgotten about. Generally speaking I think it’s silly to argue about these things, it’s all hypothetical unless guys actually wrestled each other. Regarding Ed Banach, big fan from way back. I’ll say this though for consideration on him being the choice at 197. He only wrestled 1 year at the equivalent weight 190, and lost 3 x that year to Mike Mann from Iowa State. He did beat Mann 4-3 in the finals.
  22. I remember Holmes being called the Easton Assassin.
  23. not that these are the only types of sports fans, but two types at least : 1) I want my rival team to be terrible, so even when my team is mediocre we're at least better than they are. 2) I want my rival team to be good, and for my team to still kick their ass.
  24. not sure these two always wrestled like this, but this is one of the best pin or be pinned matches I've ever seen
