  1. wrestling every weight from 158 through 275 in same season is pretty wild, and indicative of being a true team guy. What's the lightest you can weigh in and go at 275?
  2. took a look at that season for Branch again. Not like he even came into the tourney on a relative hot streak, he lost his last two duals and took 3rd at Big 8, getting pinned in his loss there.
  3. good point. if you look at fishbane's long list of guys with high career loss numbers, guessing almost all took the brunt of those early in career. Bono for example lost 27 his 1st two seasons and then only 7 his last two years.
  4. Kirk Trost from Michigan (heavyweight champ in '86) had 48 career losses. edit - an intermat article has him with 48, nwhof has him with 43.
  5. Jeff Walter from Wisconsin (heavyweight champ in '96) had 43 career losses.
  6. Branch had 9 his freshman year when he won it. Chris Bono lost 34 times in his career at Iowa St
  7. This was the year Metcalf was at Virginia Tech and I have some vague (perhaps inaccurate) recall that he lost to Aaron Martin that season....maybe it was here?
  8. kind of all over the place with Pitt. Ranked 6, 10, and 16 across the 3 rankers. And I can see them placing 6th, maybe even a bit higher; can also see 16th or below if one or two key guys fall short.
  9. App St starters in general have wrestled a good amount, I didn't go all the way down the rabbit hole as far as how many are vs D1, but per wrestlestat their starters have 24, 20, 21, 25, 34, 29, 27, 21, 26, and 21 matches. Meanwhile I know of some programs where no starter has hit the 20 match mark yet. @JVStateChamp this supports your contention as far smaller schools from smaller conferences
  10. did he make top 8 while at Mizzou before the transfer to Clemson?
  11. 1. Stephen Neal 2x champ, pretty sure he never won California state title in HS. 2. Few more that come to mind - Mocco, Sammie Henson, Mark Schultz
  12. doh, good look forward to seeing Nino go. Yeah I'll have multi screens going too.
  13. great night of NCAA wrestling on tv with this one and then the 2 B1G duals. Per Virginia Tech site, here are the probable match-ups: 125 – Cooper Flynn, r-Fr vs Colton Camacho, r-Jr 133 – No. 5 Sam Latona, r-Jr vs No. 7 Micky Phillippi, r-Sr 141 – No. 12 Tom Crook, Fr vs No. 3 Cole Matthews, Jr 149 – No. 9 Caleb Henson, Fr vs No. 29 Tyler Badgett, r-So 157 – No. 5 Bryce Andonian, Sr vs No. 33 Dazjon Casto, Sr 165 – No. 25 Connor Brady, r-So vs No. 23 Holden Heller, r-Sr 174 – No. 3 Mekhi Lewis, r-Sr vs Luca Augustine, r-Fr 184 – No. 7 Hunter Bolen, r-Sr vs No. 19 Reece Heller, r-Jr 197 – No. 22 Andy Smith, r-So OR TJ Stewart, Fr vs No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi, r-Sr 285 – No. 23 Hunter Catka, r-So vs No. 5 Dayton Pitzer, Fr or Jake Slinger, Sr Rooting for Tech, but also hope to see Pitzer and Bonaccorsi. I guess with Pitzer being a freshman there is still question of whether they turn him loose for rest of the season, but why is Nino in the OR category? Banged up?
  14. so I got 4 out of 5. not bad. only one I was positive on was Smith, somehow that little nugget of info, Smith being the 1st wrestler to get it, stuck in this old brain.
  15. BAC setting it up just so for the super bout at 133, nice. doubt it happens, but good try.
  16. totally guessing on some -John Smith, Jordan Burroughs, Kyle Snyder, Bruce Baumgartner, Rulon?
  17. I think the premise is titles already won at time of the dual or total titles ever won. Some ISU Iowa matches early 80s would be way up there.
  18. Billy Baldwin is sad. joking aside, sorry to hear. Is there another brother still on the team? Quite a history with that team and family.
  19. wrestlestat has O'Connor winning 4 x previously vs Andonian.
  20. Backpack Lizak. I'm not really suggesting Steen will actually achieve similar success, just having some fun with the notion of 'thrown to the wolves' as that was a thing on the old forums Lizak's 1st year.
  21. I recall a Pa kid who wrestled 125 in the B1G and was routinely noted on the old forums to have been thrown to the wolves his 1st year and he ended up doing ok. With this W under his belt, maybe Steen just needs a semi rhyming nickname to achieve AA status down the road?
  22. John Hartupee, who pinned Barry Davis at the NCAA tournament? (speaking of pins of a great wrestler, but maybe freshman year Barry doesn't count as great, he was the #3 seed though)
  23. I hope Andonian wins, but don't forget about Austin O'Connor as well. He's had his number in the past.
  24. Lincoln McIlravy, interview before 1997 NCAA championship match vs Chris Bono. Interviewer (Jeff Blatnick?) asked him if he had a go to move. Mac’s answer “about 7 of ‘em”.
  25. Ty and TJ ended up as teammates at UNC. Think Moore made blood round once while Jaworsky as you noted was a 3x champ. Moore’s younger brother Teague later won a title for Oklahoma St, which is where Jaworsky started his college career.
