  1. Gilman placed 5th once as well. Not that it changes the narrative re progression, but 5th sounds better, IS better, than being noted as DNP.
  2. Todd Tarpley put together a blog of his experiences wrestling for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club. Some good stuff in here. https://wrestlingforgable.blogspot.com/ an excerpt from one of the posts, on what it was like wrestling with the young Brands brothers. Terry is the tougher of the two, at least from my vantage point. He is a 118 pounder, and Tom is 126, but Tom makes more mistakes. I typically go 50-50 with either of them for the first 20 minutes of wrestling. But they don't get tired. They will almost get your leg, and almost get your leg, and almost get your leg, and eventually they'll get your leg. Then they'll get it again. And again. And again. It is highly annoying.
  3. yes, Brother Morris RIP shared some great stories
  4. link to some other good stuff from Randy Lewis The House of Seven Gables - College and International Wrestling - IndianaMat
  5. from the not too distant past, Brock Mauller (Mizzou) and for simplicity Matt King (Edinboro)
  6. some recent discussion on Maryland
  7. 2015 Edinboro - 133 Schopp and 184 Avery deserve most of the overachieving credit. Schopp was 9 seed placed 3rd after losing first match. Pinned 4 on backside. Avery 13 seed placed 3rd.
  8. re Gabe Dean and in no way to diminish the stats work of that no nothing guy, but keep in mind also that he was called 'destroyer of worlds' on the old forums and but for a 1 point finals loss to Bo Nickal would be in a different category all together.
  9. Back in the 70s Pat Milkovich won twice in a row then was runner-up twice.
  10. I think this is a good one, current Hokie Assistant Coach Cody Brewer back in his Sooner wrestling days
  11. Of the matches that are set at this point, Snyder vs Cox is I guess the marquee match given their combined accolades. What other matches are most interesting? Can any of the challengers threaten the returning medalists?
  12. Virginia Tech #s look weird. Best is less than their average?
  13. I recall this story as well. I think that exchange was between former Iowa St great Mike Land and Hawkeye Randy Lewis.
  14. his NCAA tournament loss was 3-2 TB to the eventual champ, so there's 1 of the 3 losses accounted for anyway.
  15. regarding Pat Smith, just as he was the 1st to win 4 NCAA titles, it was also not as common in his era for guys to win 4 HS titles. It was getting more common by then, but still not like now, and if you go back 5-10 years from there it was still a pretty big deal. Funny I had thought of posting about guys who won more NCAA titles than HS state championships. Some recent discussion on Jim Zalesky made me think about when I looked up his bio. 2 time HS champ in Iowa, 3 time NCAA champ at Iowa with a much better overall record in college than HS
  16. impressive but not 55 points
  17. I remember Varnish. Also remember a lot of debate over Hodge the year Jayson Ness won it and Varner was 2nd in vote.
  18. Fwiw Lee Kemp’s wiki page says he retired after being runner-up in the ‘84 Olympic Trials. I’ve not found anything yet that mentions Jimmy Z being runner-up in trials on any occasion. In ‘80 he would have been pretty young to be a contender, ‘84 again was apparently Kemp, ‘88 pretty sure Dave Schultz was runner-up to Kenny Monday. Not sure who Monday beat in ‘92 and ‘96. agree with all you’ve said in terms of Kemp’s great career being somewhat overlooked due to lack of Olympic Gold.
  19. What happens to Duke, Wake Forest, Syracuse and BC?
  20. Marcus LeVesseur at D3 Augsburg excelled in both sports
  21. Thought Schultz beat Lee Kemp to make the Olympic team.
