I think the development of Olejnik this year shows that the Okie State crew knows how to coach. Some of Olejnik's low level leg attacks have him looking like a young John Smith. A good Okie State is better for wrestling as a whole in my opinion.
Cormier doesn't seem afraid to send his big time HS studs to Stillwater. See Cody Merrill. Do we know that Espo left the program on bad terms? The olympic training center is a sweet gig for coaches. Good pay, no knocking on doors and recruiting, good location, etc. With a young family, the olympic training center coaching gig would be much better for work life balance.
Brooks biggest tests are going to be Hidlay and Ferrari. He is favored in both matches for sure but that will be his toughest competition. FWIW Rocky Elam and Stephen Buchanan fit the bill of big, lengthy, strong 197 pounders that could in theory give Brooks a tough match.. But after watching his beat down on Sloan at the all star classic I have a hard time envisioning it.
There is not anyone keeping up with Starocci at 174 this year in my opinion. He made the #2 guy look like he was scared to be out there against him. It is possible someone like Gabe Arnold could emerge and push for a title chance against Starocci but getting to the championship and beating Starocci are two different challenges.
I would say yes, they are top 5 now still. PSU, Iowa, Ohio State, OK State seem to be the clear top 4 programs when you consider tradition, support from the university/alumni, success, etc. The fifth spot is more up for debate
It would be notable if Smith said he thought Crookham would beat Fix. Of course he thinks Fix would beat him and that Fix should be #1. That is his guy.
Interesting. The prospects of him wrestling are looking up. I would also guess that means he is whooping up on Harley Andrews otherwise why would he come out.
The classic Iowa style that guys like TnT, McIlravy, Ironside, etc wrestled is more akin to the style that DeSanto wrestled than anyone on Iowa's current roster. Penn State has a couple of wrestlers that are reminiscent of the classic Iowa style in SVN and Haines. Keckeisen also comes to mind.
I believe that is where his family lives. Melissa HS has a great head coach Oliver Pierce (NQ at ASU), who was an assistant at Allen prior to taking the head coaching position at Melissa.
I would love to see it. The Polar Bear was a freak wrestler in HS. He was an honorable mention Big 10 all conference for football. It would be very surprising to see him make 285, he is a big boy.
