  1. I don't get the Warnerov hate. My dude is a total warrior and returning finalist at a weight in which any of the Intermat top thirty could be All Americans this year. The returning champ is down at #4, the 35-year-old Cuban freestyle world-beater is #5, a returning AA at #17, an age group world champ at #18. A top contender will have to beat #21 Cam Caffey in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Another high seed will have #20 man-mountain Luke Stout. The weight class is bonkers. I get that Warner walks out onto the mat looking like present-day Russell Crowe, and, sure, he probably smells of whiskey and sex, but that's actually pretty cool. This is his Final Battle, and he's dealing with injuries (pretty obviously) so give him some slack.

  2. Starocci is a cornball. “You should have killed me last time” is absolute loser shit. It’s folkstyle wrestling.

  3. Warner is a damn good wrestler who is fighting through injuries and probably some motivation issues. College wrestling is very hard and he has been doing it at a very high level for a long time now. I hope he finds a way to enjoy his final matches and achieves at a level his heart can accept. Hawkeye message board warriors have no idea what these guys deal with on a day to day basis. I have always admired Warner for his wrestling and the way he conducts himself after wins and losses. A true credit to his team and family.

  7. Everyone loves to talk about Mark's losing record when entering NCAA's and then winning it. But, in my research I discovered another national champ (NAIA) that entered with a losing record... Thurman Landers of Central Washington: "As a junior in 1970, Landers delivered the shocker of the national tournament, winning the 142-pound title as an unseeded entry who came in with a 4-9 record. He won five straight matches and topped the unlikely run with a 6-5 decision in the final, a victory that was secured with an escape in the final seconds." I'd bet there are others out there. Anyone know of worse than 4-9?

  14. Watching IL v MSU today, it came down to hwt, with 1 min to go it switched to something like S2 E3 2015 Wisconsin basketball. Had set it to record on Hulu so pulled up the recoding a bit latter, ff to the end, same thing. Was watching OSUe v NWu same time on tablet B1G+ app, the app streaming is horrible.

  15. There is a continuous rumbling amongst the people for/against a push-out rule. How would we feel with a modification of the current out of bounds calls.. removing the ‘action’ option? Every time wrestling ends out of bounds (when neutral) there is a stalling call. Be it on one guy or double stalling. Technically, going out of bounds is avoiding wrestling in some form. If we don’t like the push-out as a tactic the guy strictly pushing out can be hit for stalling (which is currently the rule but never called)

  16. The #1 ranked wrestler at 197 lost to a guy ranked only 19th!!! Word on the street is because HEW kicked in. I’m sure Mizzou twitter and forums are going crazy right now saying he should be replaced by the backups.

  17. For what it’s worth, the BTN app is horrible for me on chrome cast. It will randomly start looping. I’ve completely given up and just watch it on my wife’s laptop which is fine but pretty annoying when you have a TV just sitting there.

  20. I get what you're trying to do with that rule but think it a pushout would be much better. The automatic stalling is still subjective - which wrestler do we hit with the call. Pushout rule is objective, and I think that's a big part of why it's been a substantial plus overall. This would be a good move. The lack of action in the 3 minute first period gets too many matches off to a bad start. The sport is suffering. Even Penn State matches have less action. I thought that the Tom Brands press conference on this, assuming I heard things correctly, showed the problem. First, his simple retort is that they sell out NCAAs so you can't say there's anything wrong with the product - college wrestling leaders, don't take this for granted, if you do it will be too late before you realize you've got a problem. Don't be Rod Blagojevich - I've got this thing and it's f'ing golden. Also he was asked and answered generally about moving toward freestyle. I don't think they have to move toward freestyle. They just have to add one objective rule, which freestyle itself added not long ago to address the same problem. This is necessary because the referees make it as clear as they possibly can, every single match of every single season, that they are not comfortable with aggressive subjective stalling calls being the answer to the problem.

  21. Agree. Was frustrating to watch, though, just lots of stuff that went wrong - particularly at 184, couldn't believe that first period ended with as close a score as it did. I'll try to take your approach, though, and look forward to March, which does show promise.

  22. Surprisingly fun match. MSU has made some strides in recent years.

  23. Yup. If we win two of the 5 super close (3 OT and 2 1pt) matches, we win. I think (hope) we get 4-5 AAs this year.

  27. I can't see how it would destroy the sport. There's plenty of action in Freestyle because of it, and a lot happens on the edge. Someone is going to score if they go out while on their feet. Nope, not in folkstyle. People use the edge constantly to avoid being scored upon. I used to have 8 guys that would go with me to nationals. That's about half now. I'm not joking when I say a significant factor was going out of bounds to avoid wrestling. As one guy said, "I came to watch some action . . . not constant walking back to the center for restarts."

  28. Evan Bates was up 5-1 in the third and lost the match! Thomas, Cannon, and Mayfield all lost very close matches to AA caliber guys! Chumbley is a round of twelve guy as is Troy Fisher.

  34. 17-16 ILLINI ILLINOIS wins four of the first five and then Edmond Ruth at 174. The hero was Jake Harrier beating Peyton Omania. Also, Danny Pucino with the tech fall. Other ILLINI winners were Maximo Renteria, and Lucas Byrd, who controlled Rayvon Foley from start to finish. It was a true team win. Anthony Federico (in lieu of Mikey Carr) and redshirt Freshman Dylan Connell kept the big guns for MSU (Chase Saldate and Layne Mxyzptlk) to very close decisions.

  43. They wrestled the night before at Illinois. Manning gave his older guys (Cronin, Robb, and Labs) the night off. They gave others the night off against Illinois. They beat both teams handily with backups wrestling. At this point of the season, guys are fighting injuries. He doesn’t need to grind these guys down to nothing before the end of the year. The goal is to have these guys firing on all cylinders by the B1Gs and Nationals.

  48. Will there be another vision quest a la DeSanto who took out Lee in his only high school loss in the final at States? Will there be another Larry Owings, who took out Dan Gable to give him his only college loss in the NCAA finals? Will there be another Rulon Gardner who took out Aleksandr Karelin (one of the greatest wrestlers ever, who had a 13 year winning streak) in the Olympic finals to end the Russian's career? Will there be another Mario Lopez (aka A.C. Slater) in "Saved by the Bell" who .... (what the hell did he do anyway)?
