VanNess of Penn State is a problem.

Starts slow and gives up points early in too many matches.

Some wrestle the match of their careers at Nationals & if he hits one of these guys he might not be able to gain back the ground he lost early. Especially if the opponent keeps pushing him rather than just trying to hold a lead.

His method is risky & can bite him since he will face every match against a motivated opponent.

I think he's almost too obvious of a pick for the upset given how he gives up the early points. My problem with that take is that I just don't see ANYONE at 149 taking the mantle. It's the weakest weight class this year imo. SVN is the guy to win it, even with his sloppiness.

He only had 4 duals this season where he didn't have bonus pts.

There are some round 1 matches I have on upset alert:

9 Dom Serrano v 24 Blake Boarman

8 Alex Facundo v 25 Sergio Desiante

10 Myles Takats v 23 Luca Augustine

6 Justin Radamcher v 27 Gabe Arnold

4 Sonny Sasso v 29 Colton Hawks

Agree on the Desiante possible upset. He’s been so close to beating higher ranked guys all season. He has had a problem finishing some shots but looked great in the ACC championship even in his loss to Singleton.

My upsets that feel worth noting (championship-side only)

125: Robinson in the semis (if you want to call this an upset)

133: Ayala over Blaze in the quarters

141: Nothing excting

149: Swiderski over Van Ness (Van Ness starts slow and I don't think Swiderski is a dog. I don't think Swiderski gets bullied in the second half of the match) I also have McNeil making the semis on the bottom.

157: I have Robideau taking out Larkin and Duke to make the finals (haven't picked a winner between Robideau and Shapiro yet).

165: Nothing exciting

174: Nothing exciting

184: BrockMan makes the semis

197: Merrill makes the finals

285: AJ over Yonger in the semis.

Swiderski has a piss poor tank.

Only way he beats SVN is scoring early and/or decking him, or scoring, running and the ref swallows his whistle for 4+ minutes.

I love alot of these takes @BruceyB

For me I almost think frost has a better shot van ness, just because he gets him early, but ya then Casey, SVN has a difficult path. I still had SVN winning but only because caseys knee doesn't seem fully healed yet.

Mcneil in the semis is completely doable. In one of my leagues I have him in the finals (I was on the barley sodas).

The bottom side of 149 is about wildest bracket I have had to sort through in a while.

184 is another good take, but it involves help from the coaching staff on making sure he doesn't put him self in situations he can't control too often.

Full of un-bias blasphemy.

Piss poor? In what matches has Swiderski's tank been a concern? I'm not saying it hasn't, but I haven't seen it.

Much appreciated.

I think 149 is a sneaky fun bracket. It's certainly not the strongest field, but I don't think any other weight has nearly as wide an array of possible results. I think every single match-up in R2 is interesting. I love Jacob Frost, but I don't think 149 is his ideal weight, and I don't think that bodes well against a horse like Van Ness.

Pfft. These takes are trees with no limbs on 'em. I'm predicting the rise from the dead of a guy who'll finally make use of his redshirt, entering as a bottom seed and taking the title at all four middle weights, which will wrest the championship away from PSU, making it the first and probably only time a team title at any level has gone to an individual, here, in the person of a certain grappler who grappled so hard he grappled to an early grave, the late great & great late legend gone by the name o' Skibby MaRue!

For a first round upset I’m liking 24-seed Joe Curtis over #9 Chris Moore.   20-2 in countable matches with a 79% bonus, only losses to Welsh and Conway.

As an actual Upset - someone beating Jax.

The kid looks phenomenal on the mat. Moves we know won't work yet he completes them and then keeps pushing for more.

Doesn't have enough matches - yet is ranked #1. Coaches can see reality & he has earned the spot.

Barr & Mendez both would be a big surprise, but this true Freshman an even bigger one given the results we see and the hype that come with it.
