Haines will graduate as a 21 year old.

Jayden James is in the same boat. He’s 17 and about to graduate. Melvin Miller (who he beat) is a year older than him but a grade behind him, and Miller catches all of the hype.

I believe Hamiti graduated at 21 as well and is currently 22. Which is nuts to think about when there are multiple 25 and 26 year olds competing in the NCAA field this year and multiple high school seniors that are 3 years younger than him.

While Messenbrink will be 24, Van Ness has to be up there, Mirasola's, Joe Sealey, and many more. It's common in wrestling and other sports but Bassett gets singled out all the time. Daton Fix is the only other person off the top of my head I can recall getting negative press for his age.

Re hypetrains: Me, too. While I have no idea how these guys are totally comfortable committing their every thought to the permanent record, they are. And, by all indications, these Most Photogenics have increased the sport's popularity. As I've noted before, girls in my English 11 class who have no real connection to wrestling know Bassett. GIA sold out several times this year when 10 years ago they would drape upper sections to make it look packed. This is all crazy to me.

The guys that finish their NCAA eligibility at 22 are more of the exception then the rule.

Most student-athletes enter college at 18 and graduate within four to six years. Based on NCAA "six-year" graduation tracks (the standard metric), the age distribution for athlete graduates typically follows this pattern:
  • Age 21–22 (approx. 70–75%): The vast majority graduate "on time" within four years of enrollment.
  • Age 23–24 (approx. 15–20%): This group includes those who took a "redshirt" year (sitting out a season to preserve eligibility) or "COVID years" of extra eligibility granted recently.
  • Age 25+ (approx. 5–10%): This smaller percentage consists of "super-seniors," military veterans, or professional athletes who returned to finish their degrees later in life.

That doesn’t appear to be factoring in holdbacks prior to college which is fairly common.  It also doesn’t seem to include guys who do grad school while still having NCAA eligibility

See this is fucked because Jesse Mendez will graduate @ 22 years old with at least two natties under his belt. If his parents took the easy route he’d be a 4 time champ.

I agree with what @1032004 said. Bassett was more aggressive in the hand fight and took more shots. Also, using as Bartlett as a much of him turning into "Beau Bartlett" isn't exactly a great example. Bartlett made Jesse Mendez very boring to watch as well.

In a time where we have a lot of top level guys relying primarily on defense and wrestling a very boring style, regardless of how you feel about Bassett's age and social media, the entire wrestling world should applaud the kid for wrestling everywhere, and letting it fly when he's out there. We're at a time when a lot of guys are way more worried about losing than they are about scoring and showing what they can do. Say whatever you want about Beau and the Bassett family, but he competes everywhere, he's not afraid to take losses, and he wrestles an aggressive and entertaining style.

Early on, I was not a fan of Beau Bassett with the social media and hypetrain behind him, but as time has gone on, I've changed my tune and really just appreciate him for always putting it on the line and almost always putting on an exciting show. I don't really care one way or the other on whether he wins or loses, but you know when you tune into a Bassett match, it's not going a let down like so many top match-ups are these days due to ultra-conservative wrestling.

I agree completely, very well said.

Sorry if already mentioned but the best kid I’ve seen wrestle Bassett and has multiple wins against him on the freestyle circuit is Luke Stanich. Excellent hand fighting, strong kid, doesn’t allow Bassett to get into his ties easily… same recipe.

Bassett falls into the same group as 15-20% of other athletes that nobody complains about. Got it.

I think we're in a time where many of the top guys are very offensive and not at all boring.  Our worlds lineup was Lee, Forest, Woods, Duke, Carr, Haines, Valencia, Hidlay, Snyder, Hendrickson.  I'm not sure you could call any of those guys boring, and a bunch are extremely offensive.

I think Bassett fits in with that aggressive group.  I feel the same as you and appreciate his style.

Bo Bassett barely makes the PIAA age cutoff (see below).  His birthday is in August, and he was born in 2006 so he will be 20 years old this summer, shortly after high school graduation.  That's basically the age of most sophomores in College.

In Pennsylvania, student-athletes competing in PIAA sports must not have reached their 19th birthday by June 30th immediately preceding the school year. Additionally, eligibility is restricted to four consecutive years beyond the eighth grade. For junior high (grades 7-8), the age limit is 15.

He will turn 20 the first day of classes as a freshman at Tech.

It's truly dumbfounding anytime someone points out Bassett's age when it seems harder to find guys that graduate high school at 18 than it is 19. I said it after Who's #1 last fall.. I only saw a single wrestler out of the 20 that were not "old" for their grade. But we still have "adults" complaining about kids from one school.

Not to mention most of the people b*tching don't even know how old he actually is.

I feel bad for 19 year old Brandt Harer who is legally within PIAA's age limit and still has to wrestle 19 year old Bo Bassett who is legally within PIAA's age limit. Just seems really unfair.

Yes, freestyle isn’t folkstyle but…Bump?

That last takedown, at the very least, was not a takedown in today's NCAA D1 Folkstyle.  Reaction time and all...

And weren’t some of Valencia’s points off of leg laces?

Absolutely.  All the more reason to acknowledge that their match from yesterday does nothing other than indicate it would likely be competitive.

Didn't Bassett just squeeze a 3-1 win over some kid a few weeks ago?

Does that mean he also would have won a 149lb title?

The sentiment on Bo was really down last year after he failed to make a world team. Good on him for continuing to put in the work and improve. I just wish his father was less of a self serving turd biscuit. Bo would have looked so good in black and gold

After just finishing the youth gauntlet. I have 3 in college wrestling! One D1, one D2 and one D3. All graduated at 18 and have or will finish their RS freshman years at 18 years old. The advantage these holdbacks have is bigger than anyone is letting on! The issue with this generation of kids is not them, it is their dad's or parents. It became a trend around Cael's run with the new kids. One time hold back for most of the elite guys. Then to keep getting the advantage dad's came up with the almost two years back by doing a PG year or just flat out holding them back twice in Kindergarten and 8th grade. You talk about a well calculated evil ass plan. I knew several who did this! All of the high school guys making huge noise this year are mostly double holdbacks- I will point out Merrill and Bo. They will be 20 their first year of college. I know one of the dads here and this was calculated since elementary school. It is a sickness that has to stop in our sport. It is cheating. But almost 3/4 of the power 4 recruits are holdbacks. About a 1/4 are double. A year at these ages is a huge advantage. It doesn't fully even out until about 20. And 20 is the target age for being freshman. In other words 4 timer vs 2 timer. It is huge difference maker for your $$ in college and after. I like the new proposed rule change possibly coming but I think it should be even more rigid!

It is not cheating, if done properly. Following NV state guidelines, our son started kindergarten at the latest allowable timeframe. He will turn 19 in April of his SR year in HS. For what it's worth, he's still one of the smallest kids in his grade; but also has a 160+ IQ, and took AP Calculus while in 8th grade.

That said, I do have an issue with kids who retake a year while in middle school. Repeating 8th grade seems to be a common approach. Unless the kids is academically challenged, I see no reason to hold the kids back.

Props to you for having a child that is statistically one of the smartest human beings to ever live. 160+ puts him past Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Terrence Tao (arguably the best theoretical mathematician alive), etc. You're wasting his brilliance because he's "small". No super genius should be graduating high school at almost 20 years old - he should've been graduating college at 16 years old and have a PhD by 20 if you weren't bsing. Me thinks you're full of it though.

This is an incredibly self-serving point of view given that you know nothing about the kid. Maybe he wants to continue to go to school with his friends and doesn't have any desire to graduate early and rush into college as a small and extra young kid. Maybe Lu_Alum understands that you only get to be a kid once and that there is no reason to rush through school and into adulthood.

One of my cousins was a nationally ranked mathlete in high school and is the most intellectually gifted person that I have ever met.. he got one question wrong on the SATs which, ironically, was in math. He graduated at 18 despite the fact he could have graduated much earlier.
