What the odds that when Big10 is over all those who picked Byrd will finally realize these freshman is actually insanely good.

Byrd wrestles at about 3/4th speed compared to these new guys. He won it all last year against a weaker field, but I just can't fathom it working against 4 crazy talented freshman.

Once Byrd's defense gets cracked through a little bit by some of these tougher youngsters, he will be in trouble. He won a natty last season by utilizing a very stingy defense and also benefiting from a weak weight class. His defense is still stingy, but the 133lb class is world's better than what we saw last year.

Y’all not putting much stock in veteran savvy.

Look I'm the resident Fighting Illini homer and not even I can say with absolute conviction Byrd will repeat. Jax Forrest is on a path that includes names on a very short list and Blaze is supposedly right there with him. The irony is not lost on me that Poeta was supposed to be the chosen one back in the day until some guy named Burroughs showed up and dominated the world. If Byrd doesn't bring home the trophy again it's not because he lost to some rando, it's because history will very likely look very differently on this bracket in 10 years than it will in 4 weeks.

That said...

f u all. Byrd is the wyrd and he's going to win again and you should all appreciate that Byrd + Ellie on Saturday night ESPN is 1000000x better than any BTN Marinelli viewing. Put some respeck on the nation's most popular wrestling couple.

Supposedly? Blaze won the last two and Jax really struggled to get anywhere near his legs. I know everyone is in love with Jax right now, but one of these days people will appreciate how hard it is to break thru Marcus Blaze's head and hands defense.

I didn't see Blaze get robbed of a world bronze last year. Get over it.

By showing one guy has a two match win streak over another thus suggesting he indeed is in his league, what exactly am I supposed to "get over"??

Byrd has an RPI at #12.  Blaze has an RPI at #1.

According to overall criteria, there is no way Byrd deserves to be seeded first at BIG Tens.

It will be corruption if he is.  Slot him in at #2 and make him earn a place in the finals.

The RPI rankings are silly... Ayala at 6 is a joke

Is it Byrd's fault Penn St avoided Illinois this year?

They didn't avoid Illinois.   And if they had wrestled, PSU would have shut them out like they did half the Big Ten teams they faced.

RPI is based on a formula.  It doesn't involve ifs, ands, buts, whatabouts, and the like.

It is one factor among others.  Byrd faced a much weaker schedule than both Davino and Blaze, who have better wins.

Face the facts.

Offer some evidence not an emotional response.  There are criteria in place.

Is it the fault other wrestlers that Byrd was decked by Kade Moore but the ref wasn't in the position to call it?

not emotional at all... the seedings will be what they are.  Some of the RPI rankings are silly.  Byrd is undefeated and beat Ayala handily 7-2.  Ayala is being rewarded by RPI for losses on a tough schedule.   Minto at number 1 is also silly.  Split with Kharchia and Facundo, lost to Haines and Kennedy.  Tough schedule yes.... losing more then winning yes.  Number 1 for Minto, kind of silly.

Here is some Lucas Byrd data on all matches against R12 and All-Americans. For his career he has wrestled like a guy who will place 3rd or 4th in this tough field. For his career, he has gone 7 wins and 7 losses in matches against guys whose best finish was 2nd, 3rd or 4th. He has been able to defeat 5 of the 7 unique guys he's faced at these rankings. He had a 75% win rate against Ayala, 50% win rate against Ramos, 50% win rate against Korbin Myers, 100% against both Romney and McGee, and 0% against DeSanto and Fix. Given that Fix is a 5 time 2nd placer and Desanto a 2 time 3rd place finisher, doesn't Byrd feel like a 3rd or 4th finisher?  This season he has had a 5 point margin against his lone R12 opponent Ungar. For his career he has averaged 1.84 point margin against All Americans. This season he has exceeded that with two wins over Shawver and Ayala with a margin of 3.5. The rest of the data follows and shows Byrd is a master of the close one. He only tends to score against guys whose best finish is 5th or worse.

Score Overall

ALL MATCHES: Points 229-120, 4 fall W, 1 fall L, 5.33-2.79, margin 2.54

ALL AA matches 146-87, 4.56-2.72, margin 1.84

Wrestled 22 unique guys who have earned AA, going 12-10 against, Overall 24-12 counting repeats. Only 5 unique wrestlers in this group have defeated him every time they’ve wrestled: Mendez (1st twice, 6th), Desanto (3rd twice, 5th), Fix (5 time 2nd), Nagao (4th, R12) and Hayes (8th).

Wrestled 9 unique guys who have earned R12, going 8-1 against, Overall 11-1 counting repeats

17-11 against R12 and AA in 3 point matches, meaning he has been beaten by over 3 points twice in his career, I think. A master of the close one...

Coming from a big fan of Byrd last year, loved watching him win it all.  But this year is not the same.  My prediction is 5th at best at NCAA's.  Just too much offense and scrambling from the young guys.

Byrd is one of my favorites, but I’m not sure he can win a bracket with Forrest, Blaze, Davino, Seidel + all of the others.
