When was the last 40 win season?
I imagine not too too long ago as even Yianni had 38 as a true freshman. I think it would likely be by a freshman that does a lot of those early season tournaments or a F&M guy.  Kresho from F&M had 48 matches last year going 33-15.  Conway is 25-1 right now.

I checked wrestle stat but they only lists the win leaders for the current year.

If anyone knows of a place or database where win leaders per season can be easily viewed. Let me know please.

If not, does anybody know of the last time we had a 40 win season or guys who have had 41 seasons in the past decade or so?

Chance literally wrestled as many matches in the 2018 season as Aaron brooks did in 2020, 2021, and 2023 combined. Crazy.

Sidenote: based on todays eligibility, shouldn't Chance have 2 more years? 🤔

He did but 6 of those matches were against D2 wrestlers that didn't count on his official record.

Marsteller is the most recent with 40 wins of any kind which was in 2018.  The last wrestler with 40 official wins was Peyton Walsh in 2015.

Neal RIchards of VMI had 36 wins going into NCAAs in 2020 before the tournament was cancelled.  He was the 11 seed at 174lbs.  The expected result there would be losing in the R12 or 3 wins, but 40 was on the table.

Thanks guys. again, only looking for non redshirt seasons

40 wins plus (nothing less than 40)

Official matches

easiest way to check would be Russell stat make sure they don’t have a red shirt symbol next to him and 40 wins as wrestle stat will only count official wins…most of the time

Gabe Dean 2014 (41) perfect example of this thx !

Peyton Walsh was 40-10 in 2015.  That's official matches.  He wrestled 6 in season tournaments including 2 opens.

I remember Richards absolutely mauling Foca that year I’m pretty sure he teched him it’s too bad he didn’t get a shot at ncaas

The VMI website has Richards’s record as 38-7.  I think the two matches that don’t count are the Foca match and a match against Coast Gaurd (D3) at the All Academy Championships.  He would likely have reached 40 overall wins at NCAAs.

What’s interesting is looking at the last wrestler to win 40 overall matches (Marsteller), the wrestler that has come closest since (Richards), and the last wrestler to win 40 official matches (Walsh) a common thread emerges.  All these guys wrestled for team that had a secondary conference tournament.  For Richards (VMI) and Welsh (Navy) this was the All Academy Championships.  For Marsteller (Lock Haven) this was the PSAC championship.  The PSAC championship hasn’t been contested since 2019 and the All academy championship has not been wrestled since 2020.  This makes 40 wins less likely for wrestlers at these programs today.

I remember the days when PSAC's were tough, like, real tough. And a big deal...sad.

The PSAC schools are really struggling with declining enrollment.   The mergers are eventually going to kill athletics at all of the northern schools.  It really is sad.

For those who may not know, Clarion, Edinboro and California have had administation merge into PennWest while Lock Haven, Blooomsburg and Mansfield are Commonwealth University. So all of the DI wrestling schools left are struggling.

Lock Haven still has a few NQ levels left and Edinboro might get one in McGill but Clarion and Bloomsburg look like they probably won't be represented at Nationals.

Slippery Rock is supposed to be bringing back wrestling.  Thats a positive for PSAC.

Still so many of the schools have either dropped wrestling or dropped to D2.  All 4 of Marsteller’s wins at PSACs in 2019 were against D2 competition.

bloom probably won’t have a qualifier this year (maybe Schafer if he comes back) but they have outside financial support and Stutzman brought in a huge recruiting class from NJ/PA last year and has another solid class being put together this year , they have a better future then the rest of the small PA schools

Yeah, Foca was a greyshirt that year for Spartan. Him, Cardenas. Ramirez and Lewis Fernandes. So he was mot enrolled or certified by NCAA so a win vs him does not count on one’s official record.

Not to knit pick, but Marsteller never had a 40 win season.  He had 38 official wins in 2018.  6 were against D2 and D3 opponents.  That same year, Yianni Diakomihalis, as a true freshman also had 38 wins going 38-1.

From what I can tell, the last two to officially do it was 2014 Gabe Dean 41 wins and 2015 Walsh 40 wins

That is wild, but that was a redshirt year (43 wins). Still impressive none fhe leas.

Only other guy I can think of that would have been close since Yianni was Chaz tucker in 2020 he was 31-0 going into the canceled NCAA's and probably would have been the 1 seed so I think 35+ wins was in reach.
