And any unfavorable results at the “high level competition” worlds don’t affect NCAA rankings or future seeds like they would at this event.

All the more reason to not participate until your team is 100 percent ready to go. They should not be penalized for being good enough to be on our USA World Teams.

6 - Mantanona

7 - Allred

8 - Ryder

9 - Smith

I think you give Ryder benefit of the doubt in the Cornell match.

This right here is correct. You the man nhs. @Jon_Kozak this is how it's done!

I do kinda agree that Smith seems high based on the Ryder loss, assuming we’re counting it.  But I’m not sure he deserves to drop all the way behind him with Ryder taking 2 losses this weekend (including to Allred, and Smith beat Allred at NCAA’s).   I think I’d go Smith at 7.

That's sound and works too. Rankings in the 7-12 range are always the trickiest

Is Welsh a serious contender this year?  I know he was runner up to Starocci but I haven't watched him wrestle much.

Is he in the same class as McEnelly, Ferrari and Sinclair?

You claim to be a Penn State fan? He wrestled on BTN. He was on a World Team.

I was annoyed they called the ankle ride on Caliendo, but only because they never call it.  It's absolutely stalling.

I was annoyed because Lockett never lifted his hands or attempted anything, looked like he was conserving energy for later neutral I think because they were both stalling he had to call one of them and ankle ride less subjective..

BREAKING NEWS- Scoring points on top 5 guys isn’t easy.

more at 11

Wasn't the point.  I was refuting that he was using living on his knees as a shot setup.  He didn't use it to set up shots against those guys.

Iowa fans always thought that was stalling, but no refs ever agreed with them.

I think most fans agree with that, but there's some nuance.

If you're pulling your arm back AND attacking... so they're not getting a two on one or a particular tie, fine.

Same with Wrestling on a knee. There are plenty of guys who go down to a knee and are almost in a sprinters stance. Burroughs is in that type of position quite a bit, Dake.

Early in the season, but Ferrari has to increase that attack rate or... I don't think he'll beat March McEnelly or Sinclair(or... rather he won't win 5 in a row, he may be either one, but... it's tough to win a tournament like that).

He certainly could. His Brother did it. I think '84 is much better than '97 when AJ won it.

Lockett was doing nothing so Caliendo was doing nothing.  Locket was on all fours not trying to improve. Hardly lifted his hands off the mat.  He didn't know who to call but the ankle ride is visible while Locket saving energy is subjective.

I was SHOCKED he was able to gut that out. He was gassing in the 2nd.

I'm also pretty skeptical of that 3-2 exchange earlier in the match.

Very impressed with Lockett though. Caliendo is one of those guys who just breaks Wrestlers. Pretty much the only guy who has been able to go attack for attack with Mesenbrink. Kinda funny he was called. Pretty amazing he ate that shot and Lockett didn't score on that early TD.

Lockett is legit, but I think he gets called for a couple stalling in March. He definitely got the final TD though.

Sure, Welsh may able to do some good things come March.  Currently, he is ranked way too high.  AJ Ferrari was ranked #4 at 197 at this same point last year and he had previously won nationals at that weight.

Welsh has one career win at 184 and couldn't start for Ohio State last year.  Maybe he will be a finalist come March, but he hasn't shown that he should be ranked as high as he is.  If he were at Cal Poly or even Rutgers with the same resume and one career win at 184, he wouldn't be ranked #4.

I think 4 is fine for Welsh.

Are we sure he “couldn’t start”?  I thought the story was he wanted to wrestle 174 last year but Ryan wanted to wait to have the wrestleoff with Kharchla since he was hurt.   I imagine Welsh could have easily started at 184 if he wanted.

Welsh did wrestle some matches as a redshirt last year, and had wins over the current #’s 15 & 25.  He also beat Ruth at NCAA’s in ‘24 who was in the 184 field last year.

These "Welsh is ranked too high" posts remind me of numerous threads pertaining to other Penn State wrestlers. Now #4 is too high? Lol.

His ability didn't evaporate because he moved to 184.

Bro, he couldn't didn't start.  You wouldn't make a peep if he wasn't from PSU.  He is currently ranked too high based on his body of work at 184.  One match.  If he beats someone good, by all means, move him up.  Will he be a national finalist again this year?  Doubtful but possible.

His ability?  He is obviously excellent, but his top ability in 2024 was somehow managing to get an amazing draw at nationals.

But guys that change weights are always ranked based on their results at their prior weight…

The claims of “he couldn’t start” are giving me pastry vibes

Did he start?  Ryan knows what is best for his team, I would imagine.

Mower beat Merrill in wrestle-offs, but can't start at Oklahoma State because Taylor theoretically knows what is best for his team.  Give Ryan some credit.

AJ Ferrari WON 197, and stayed at weight but started last season ranked 4th- and some people said he was ranked too high.

Just seems as if Welsh is ranked a bit high at the moment.  Win some matches against top 10 guys at the weight and I will be more understanding.

we see eye to eye, Lockett just natural flowing talent. Caliendo hard working making most of his high capabilities. I am surprised at how small Caliendo looks compared to : Hall(bellermine) , Lockett, Gallagher,

I don’t think Ryan ever said the team was better without Welsh in the lineup.  It seemed like he was 1) being loyal to Kharchla, and 2) wanted to give Welsh a year to become a full-sized 184 while also allowing Starocci & Keckeisen to graduate.

AJ was 3 years removed from his title.  Welsh is only 1 year removed from his runner-up finish.
