There's a lot of talent at 184 for sure, but not a whole lot of fun. Notice how many of the top 184s are so defense-oriented? I'm thinking Ferrari, Welsh, Ryder, Smith in particular...  their starting point is excellent defense, willing to try to score only it's clearly there, and happy with a 1-0 win.  Even the more offense-minded guys like McEnelly, Sinclair and Fishback immediately shift to a defense-first mode against a tougher opponent (a la Starocci).  There's going to be zero shootouts among top-10 184lb'ers this year, and I think we're in for a whole bunch more one-late-match-TD and 1-1 SV type matches. Not blaming them, you do what works, but as a fan, I'm having a hard time getting pumped for this weight, despite the obvious skill level.

I don’t think Ryan ever said the team was better without Welsh in the lineup.  It seemed like he was 1) being loyal to Kharchla, and 2) wanted to give Welsh a year to become a full-sized 184 while also allowing Starocci & Keckeisen to graduate.

AJ was 3 years removed from his title.  Welsh is only 1 year removed from his runner-up finish.

I said: Ryan knows what is best for his team.

Now we are talking "years removed?"

Well apparently not, he lost 3 years of Welsh by suggesting he redshirt.

And yes we are, that is the reason for not ranking AJ #1 last year.

What would Zahid Valencia be ranked if he got another year of eligibility?  He is many years removed...

Well there are levels to this.  Gable was 2 years removed but almost everyone agreed with putting him #1, despite Kerk being a returning undefeated champ
