I liked Estrada last year, but I don't agree with the prevailing theory that pulling his redshirt was "stupid." We don't know what conversations were had with the kid, and why they chose to use a year of eligibility.  Did he want to wrestle? Maybe they were concerned that Teemer wasn't coming back, and they thought it was worth it to get him seasoning.  It was probably important to win a couple of those duals and he was the best option. Finally: he is part of the team and Brands is the coach, and the athletes are supposed to do what the coach says.  No one even knows what his long term future with the squad would be, especially with the way things currently are in college sports.

I don't disagree (I do like using double negatives) with anything you've said here. Fair points.

125 - Ezekiel Witt (NDSU) - Picked up a win against AA Tanner Jordan

141- Vince Cornella (Cornell) - NQ just made the u23 team coming off a med red

141 - Alex Braun (Oklahoma) - 5th at u20, top 20 big boarder

157 - Cam Catrabone (Michigan) - Good redshirt year, really close matches with Echemendiea, askey, young

174- Brockman (Michigan) - Just took 2nd at u20s, picked up 6 NQ wins in redshirt year

I think Cam is going to be a monster. I think he is a better version of Sam Cartella.

With McNeil coming in at 149, I think Gilcher will be heading up to 157lbs.  He (Gilcher) has been wrestling 74 KG on the MFS circuit this season, as well, FWIW.

I curious to see a healthy Braxton Amos up at 285 coming off his redshirt.

Working with T Cass and not cutting weight, should be an interesting year for Braxton

I would lean Cam in that wrestle off however maybe more food will help Gilcher reach that potential it looked like he had coming out of high school.

I agree.

That said, I am also wondering if there are other plans for Michigan where the Mantanona brother send up going 174/184 rather than 165/174... I have heard absolutely not, but I still wonder.

Beau did an interview where he seemed to insinuate as of now it would be hard to get that big but they are both focused on getting as big as they can right now.

Can you post that, or send it to me?

VT 141 Tampa Tom Crook. NQ as a true freshman then shirted. Had some FS success and interested to see if he can hold 141 all year

Matt Olguin - Oregon State.

I'd like to see him do well this season (since it's his last). Coming out of HS, I really thought he'd compete for a national title at some point- maybe he still can. What weight will he be at? 174?

I know he's been mentioned but i'm really looking forward to Wadsworth Ohio/Cornell freshman Jaxon Joy. Think he can make some noise, was really bummed the Bucks didn't go after him harder.

Sinclair is gonna be a title contender.

Interesting! When I look at the Mantanonas (both), I don't immediately think, "Now there's a couple of dudes who spent some time in the weight room with Les Gutches."

Sinclair is gonna be a title contender.

Sinclair is neck & neck with the highest returning placer in McEnelly.

We have Ryder and Welsh in the mix.  Those four are nutso, and that isn't even considering that there are other studs at 184lbs that might play a factor.

They're bean polls, man!  Watch Brock's match with Henckel at U20s.  He was clearly gassed from wrestling the whole day by match 2, but even in Match 1 or the US Open, he is clearly smaller.  That is at 174lbs as-is.

Chris Moore at Illinois qualified for NCAAs as a 165 true freshman, RS last year and should be in the middle of the B1G pack this year at 174. Probably Tier 3 by NHS rankings but I wouldn't be surprised if he has progressed into an R16-R12 profile.

Cael Swenson 157/165 SDSU

For SDSU I also expect Brady Roark 125 to be tough and Logan Swenson 133 to push for a spot. If he beats out Cardinal, he could be a underdog to look for.

Tom Crook 141 VT

Luke Geogg (injury not redshirt) 197 tOSU

Cael Hughes (injury not redshirt) 141 OSU

Max Brignola 165 Lehigh (wend undefeated in redshirt last year notably beating Julian Ramirez)

Greg Diakomihalis (injury not redshirt) 125 Cornell

Whoever wins the 184 spot at UNI between Gunderson and Walrath

Gavin Nelson 197 Minnesota

Christian Carrol 285 Wyoming

I throwing a Baked Potato your way, Gus, just for mentioning Max from LEHIGH (Nice! AND I hope he DOES come through on the podium next March!)

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

149 to fill the spot that Stiles left open!  😄

Agreed, definitely a strong weight class. If Ferrari doesn't go that leaves Barr as the clear 197 front runner, IMO. Curious if any of those guys are willing to make the jump.

He's huge for the weight. But I've always been high on him.

Don't forget Angelo. If I had to pick right now, I'd go:

  1. Angelo
  2. McEnelly
  3. Welsh
  4. Ryder
  5. Sinclair

But, regardless of how it plays out, that group of 5 is insane.

I'd put them in a different order, but you could mix this group in a number of ways and have a strong case. This group kind of reminds me of the old B10 174 group with Kokesh, Brown, Storley, and Evans. It'll be interesting to see if they trade wins and losses, or if they sort themselves out in a more established order over their college careers.
