This Is Fine GIF

Live look at Iowa fans trying to find a reason to be optimistic. Sorry, @VakAttack😅

I mean.  For half a century okst has not been superior to Iowa wrestling.  There is always next year.  The only way they can go is up I guess.

The fact that you responded to that gif with this statement is hilarious.

Well, I'd say they failed to use the momentum then. They have zero notable wrestlers on their roster from the 2022 class, only Arnold and Kueter from 2023, and Ferrari from 2024. Three relevant names on their roster from the three recruiting classes after their momentous national title? OKST took third this year, crowned two champions (something that Iowa hasn't done since Metcalf and Borschel), and in the last two months they have secured 4 top ten commits from the 2026 class. Iowa has only had one class since their championship with 2 top 10 recruits. So I'd say the third place finish has proven more momentous to recruits.

I'm not happy about it, but that is just the reality of what has happened in the years following their title. I never thought Iowa would struggle with bringing in quality recruits. Hell, even when OKST was at their worst, the still had big name recruits, they just weren't developing them. There must be something going on with recruiting that is leading more top 50 wrestlers to schools like NCST and VT over a storied blue blood program.

IMO the recent recruits OSU has gotten are more due to the presence of Taylor in the first place (with help from some good $ offers) than the performance of the team last season.  But again, JMO.

Saying Goodbye Will Smith GIF by MOODMAN

Bo Bassett looking for the rest of the blue chip recruits when he walks into the Iowa wrestling room.

Ludington, Ferrari, Mocco, Kueter  Deluca, and Bo is far from empty.

Half of their titles are pre prohibition.

DT isn't going anywhere unless Cael and Co. Decide to retire in the next decade and he heads back to PSU, but I would highly doubt that as well.

Carl is 2 years away from being Dan Gables age when he retired. Just some food for thought.

Cael doesn't look like he's stopping any time soon and Cunningham will have his 2 sons on the team, I bet when they retire it will be Cael, Casey and Cody together.  They are all early to mid 40s.

I have learned that Iowa fans don't know the difference between the future and the past.  Iowa rhetoric is starting to sound like the drunk fat guy at the bar talking about what a killer arm he had back in '86.  "Back in the day we were amazing!"

Recency matters

Hear are the national championship years for Iowa:
1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2021

Here they are for Oklahoma State(hence the reason for no more John Smith and hello David Taylor):
1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1946, 1948, 1949, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1971, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006

Now for Penn State:
1953, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025

Titles in the past 25 years
Penn State - 12
Iowa - 4
Oklahoma State - 4
Minnesota - 3

NCAA Titles in the past 15 Years
Penn State - 12
Iowa - 1
Oklahoma State - 0

Oklahoma State is more than a year deep in very proactively doing something about this.  Oklahoma State actively killed their programs sacred cows to move forward to progress and long term health of the program.

Non-hawkeye fans aren't raising these questions because they dislike Iowa, it's because they are concerned about Iowa.

Yup.  Just some of that famous altruistic and deep-seated love for Iowa that permeates the non-Iowa wrestling fanbase.

He pulled Forrest from Pennsylvania. You really think he can’t get Midwest kids? Come on….

There's 3 big programs in Collegiate Wrestling with a major history. He’s at one of them. Iowa would be a lateral at best. PSU, being Alma mater for him, will always be special. But Carl probably has a lifetime contract.

He pulled Ross from Iowa in the same class

Best successors to Brands that come to mind are Metcalf-Ramos-DSJ. Maybe Gilman one day in the distant future. They're all sculpted from the same Hawkeye Wrestling mold and carry Gable's wisdom, but also understand the flaws of Iowa Style and have stepped away long enough to know how to make the room, culture, and wrestling better.

I love Metcalf.  My personal favorite Hawkeye.  He has not shown himself to be an elite level coach or recruiter.

I am, that's when I got REALLY into it.  After him, it's probably Desanto.  Then you have guys like Borschel, Tony Ramos, Montell Marion, Spencer Lee, Mike Evans, Derek St. John, Michael Kemerer, Cory Clark.  Used to have Gilman high up there.  These are all guys I got to watch their matches live, as they were happening.  bviousluy there are great guys from ebfore this era, but since I can only watch videos and know the results beforehand, it loses some of the drama that I connect with.  Tony Ramos in particular has given me some insane memories (the two pins over PSU, the upset of Oliver, the turn in OT to win his title).

Ah come one vak, besides Gabe arnold, what wrestler was situated more comfortably at the intersection of boring and obnoxious than Ramos.

I think you're misremembering Tony's first three years.  He was very aggressive.
