How can you say this impacts their first “year” but then bring up Mark Hall who won NCAA’s as a true freshman?

Have you actually watched wrestling in the past ten years?

Mark Hall is remarkable because he got it figured out.  The turnaround from his slow start, getting stuffed at that iowa dual and losing to bo jordan to being the ncaa champ two weeks later was the defining event of his college career.

He didn’t really have that slow of a start though.  The dual loss to Meyer occurred after he beat 2 prior AA’s at the Southern Scuffle while in redshirt

Cannon was an elite recruit before he literally got cancer. Top 10ish on Flo I believe in his class.

Also I never felt Sealey was elite like Lilledahl and PJ Duke are. He took a couple losses towards the end of his Hs S careeer to Joey Blaze and Ethan Birden.

IIRC Sealey was on fire his sophomore year and looked like he was going to be the top recruit of a really good group, but he did not continue that trajectory and as you mentioned, took some losses that you wouldn't have expected a couple years prior.

Sealey won his World Title, but I agree on the latter sentiment.  It seems like every big match after his title was a controlling or dominating loss (Ferrari, Lockett).

You may be right, but PSU coaches probably mix up partners and training methods like use of play wrestling to ensure everyone is progressing.  Guessing, but too big/quick a cut might be the bigger factor.  Also credit to Cannon who might be the biggest reason for the score.

I'm just going by what I saw.  Wrestled very tentative.  Little follow-through.  It's like he didn't think his shots would work.  That's what I associate with someone whose confidence is in the crapper.

Yes, I'm sure the PSU coaches mix up partners, and I'm sure he's getting plenty of technique training, but there's probably not many guys in the room he can beat right now.  What's more, he's a redshirt, so I doubt they're overly concerned about his confidence since he has the whole year to figure it out.  I'd think the staff is focused more on the mental state and preparation of the starters.  In spot-starting Sealey this weekend, they're using a guy who's right in the middle of the process of getting broken down and rebuilt.

This is a fair point, though I would contend that, for who he was, how he was wrestling overall at that time, and his other big stage successes leading up to that point in his career, he had a slow start.

I still think it is about 9 months early to sound the alarm for sealey.  He could be a bench guy, because obviously for every starter at penn state there are 2 or 3 other guys who are very good but they can't even make the starting lineup.

The shocking thing is he never managed to win another title after his FR year.

It's an interesting point made about Sealey having been demoralized in the room. PSU has more depth than ever. But I would guess that he does well this summer in freestyle and it's just freshman looking like freshman. It basically happens to them all.

Also, Sealey is going to have less than 4 years in the starting lineup. When he committed, it made sense. A lot has changed since 2022. He committed like early on in his process. Messenbrink wasn't a thought. Kasak wasn't supposed to be this big. I'm probably forgetting something.

I contend it's a weight issue more than anything for Joe. He took down Marinelli twice at the BF lost 11-6 at 163.4. He wrestled last year at 165 lost 2-2 to Ferrari in UTB in the ironman finals I will add Ferrari beat him soundly at who's 1 a few months prior. I am guessing 157 is because of there being no shot he sees the lineup at 165 for at least two more years but if it's a hard cut for him I doubt he is getting as much as he should out of practice on top of the in-match issues that honestly would probably be normal for a non-PSU true freshman at this point. At the end of the day, I did not see how he fit into this lineup before I saw him wrestle this season and this probably only strengthened that sentiment.

Maybe Sealey has already peaked? Maybe after winning his WC he lost motivation?

I've seen tons of kids who were unstoppable in HS grind to a complete stop in college. Once they hit a room where they aren't king and are getting hammered every day they lose motivation and get HEW.  I can't imagine a tougher room than PSU has right now.

So many questions...breaks for lunch and dinner?  bathroom breaks? same ref the whole time? How was the fan experience?

I can only assume that they ate something in the corner between periods and that they pissed in a bucket while their coaches held up towels for their wrestler's privacy.

Takedown or no?

Takedown or not this was some top shelf wrestling from Sealy.  Kraisser probes/engages with the right arm and Sealy immediately hits the duck under.  Shows he has the goods.  To add to what some of the other commenters have said wanted to add that some wrestlers wait too much for the setup to be clean l(ike in this scenario) and have a hard time just going out there and scrapping for it.  Sealy gives me those vibes.  Reminds me a little of what we saw with Bergey and Facundo

Cael said that Sealey had got some type of surgery either in the offseason or early in the season, which may have also impacted him (or maybe impacted his weight cut at least)
