Watching the Soldier Salute finals and seeing a lot of former Hawkeyes in the corner against IA.  Now that his guys are getting out of competition and into coaching how many different branches of the Brand's Bro's coaching tree are there?  Off the top of my head (and without thinking about it more than 20 seconds) this is what I have....any head coaches?

Iowa State: Metcalf and St. John

UNC: Ramos

OSU: Gilman

Minn: Kemmerer

Murin was coaching at Brown.  Cass at Wisconsin.

Bunch of club coaches.

The fact that guys are staying in the sport reflects positively on the brothers.

Some honorable mentions that are outside of what OP is asking but somewhat part of the Brands Tree.  Mocco

But is a transplant really still part of the tree?  Or did Brands chop him off before  he graphted to the new tree?

Rumor has it the Brands Brothers, are bringing Nelson to work with wrestlers on violations.  Oh wait he said he didn’t know about any of the meetings on code of conduct.

Of active coaches (so not Gable or John Smith), I’d guess Rob Koll might have the biggest tree of head coaches if we include both former wrestlers and assistants:

Grey - Cornell

Nickerson - Northern Colorado

Hahn - SDSU

Leen - Brown

Vinson - Buffalo

Bellarmine head coach Ned Schuck belongs in this group too.  He was at Iowa from 2000-2005 which was during Zalesky's term, but Brands was there as an assistant for some of it.  I can't think of anyone that Brands coached during his time as a head coach that is/has been a D1 head coach.

I really hate the coaching tree concept. The best coaches should have multiple influences plus their own personal flavor.

A guy like Gillman is a great example. He has influences from Brands, Sanderson, Varner, plus a list of many others that work with the national team. Couple that with all the athletes that they train with. If you are going to be a good coach all those things should be incorporated into who you are as a coach.

I don't have a distaste for the coaching tree concept, when I think of myself as a coach, I think of my high school club coach as the biggest influence on my coaching philosophy and overall coaching style. I would be happy to be considered part of his coaching tree, as I think that is a compliment.

I do agree with your second point that just because an athlete wrestled for a specific coach in college, that doesn't mean they are going to coach with those philosophies and training styles. Gilman, like you said, is a perfect example of this.
