I would put Tyler Caldwell ... up there as two time runner-ups and four time AAs.

... and if I recall the guys who beat Tyler were no slouchs.

On the topic of best wrestlers not to win in last 20 years, honorable mention to Kolin Moore. Solid 4 year career, but after Bo Nickal graduated he was unstoppable his senior year and I thought would have been gauranteed to win if tournament was not canceled. But I also thought Myles Martin was a sure thing the year before, before Dean (I think) upset him.

"beat" is a strong word don't you think?  Branch tore his acl in the finals and had to default.  😉

weber took him down and branch hurt himself as the ref was was about to start calling back points...so no.

Th beauty of folkstyle wrestling. I think Hendrickson is a better mat wrestler and if he can steal a td and get the match on the mat...it's possible. Also like his chain wrestling ability, in flurry situations. DT and this program seem to fit him perfectly..

i think he's not even in Gable's league.

For the past 20 years who are the best wrestlers to never win a title? Fix and Gilman come to mind.

Sam Hazewinkle.  4 total NCAA losses.  Won 2012 olympic trials in FS and was 2008 olympic trials runnerup in GR.

3, 3, 3, 2nd right? He lost to Donahue after majoring him at B12s if IIRC.

Hendrickson is a better technician, but Steveson is quicker, stronger, faster and has a snap down go behind from hell.

Hendrickson is legitimately a top 20 in the US, at any level, technician. It just so happens he can't execute that technique against opponents who are the (formerly and hopefully still) best in the world or a big ass oak tree. Don't forget that right before Parris won a world medal Hendrickson darn near broke his ribs. Levels and such, just giving him his proper respect on the way to another 3rd place medal.

Meredith- 2,4,2

Eierman- 5,4,3,2

Sasso-2,5,2

Micha Jordan- 12, 4, 6, 2

McKenna- 3,12, 3, 2

Micic- 4,2,3, 12 (at fat weight class)

WICK- 3,4,3

Megaludis, C Clark, Ashnault, Molinaro, Tomasello were very strong multi-AA with just one title.

I am working on compiling wrestling stats of the greats from recent time.

I think to be the "best to never win" you should have probably either been the heavy favorite to win, or been stopped by an all-time great. Tyler Caldwell fits the latter situation where he was likely good enough to win at least one, if not multiple titles but suffered NCAA losses to 3 of the best to ever do it. Hazewinkel fits the former where he was the odds on favorite to win his senior year, and Donahue pulled a huge upset to stop him from becoming champion.

But really I think Fix would probably be my pick. He was a common pick his freshman year against Suriano, the first RBY final, and it was still a coin flip going into their second final. Not many would have picked Vito over him during Vito's first run to a championship, and this past season was probably the first time many didn't consider him at least a 50/50 favorite to win. He was on the level for so many years but was never able to put the whole run together.

Another guy that I think gets forgotten is Joey Dance. He was phenomenal during the regular season, and just found a way to fall short at the big dance. Alan Waters was another guy I think of that was really tough but couldn't put the full tournament together. I wouldn't put either of these as "the best" but worth a little trip down memory lane.

Yeah...they were really good as well. Obviously when you have a kid who is a 4 time finalist...he's gonna be in the conversation(while taking a Silver in the World Championships).

I just think Poeta gets overlooked. Just so clean. Had to Wrestle up at '65 as I think the two Tirapelle brothers were still there(I think, at least ), then went 3/2/2 at '57.

Pretty similar to Gillman. Was a backup as a Freshmen, Poeta went up.

I would throw in both Hidlay brothers. I to this day think Hayden got hosed a bit against Nolf and Trent just had one of the best to ever do it at his weight for 4 years.

Lance Palmer is another guy thats probably worth a mention and if Beau were to not win it this year I think he would be up there too.

Greatest brother pair has to be Hayden and Trent Hidlay. Both four time AAs.

Jayson Ness - 5,3,2,1

Dylan Ness - 2,4,2,6 (inj def after semis sr season)

Hayden HIdlay - 2,4,5,3

Trent Hidlay - 2,5,4,2

Idk man, Im going with the Ness brothers. Its close though. I think had Dylan not gotten hurt he would've won it his sr year.

Agreed, but I was responding to Gus's "who never won a title" sub-thread.

Always felt like Poeta got jobbed by the ref in his finals against Leen as well.

For guys who also got it done on the international scene I would include Myles Amine, Sebastian Rivera, and James Green.

Unfortunately for AJ Ferrari haters, I guess the existence of Myles Amine proves that 197 the year AJ won was not weak.

I think we had a different thread on it, but Rivera has to have the most wins over guys that won NCAA titles by someone that’s never won one right? (and he never even made a final):

RBY

Gross

Glory

Vito 2x

Spencer 2x
