Seemed like the most likely guess from the “bonkers” EIWA claim.

Where do we think he goes?

Folks been saying to VTech as the AHC, yeah?

His NCAA champ Henson is only a sophomore, I can’t see him leaving on him.

Well we are in the era where the athletes can openly leave pretty easily too if they have other attractive options.

How does taking a demotion help that?

He’s a head coach of a below average program. A lot of times Associate Head Coaches at top few programs get head coaching jobs at middle of the road schools before Head Coaches of bad teams.

Sean Bormet got Michigan over a established head coach

Alex Clemson got Maryland

Tony Ersland got Purdue

Mike Poeta got Illinois

Roger Chandler MSU

Brandon Eggum MN

Doug Schwab UNI

Damion Hahn SDSU

It’s not a requirement to be a current head coach to get the next job in line. However having it on a resume is a good thing but also let’s say Virginia Tech gets 2nd to Penn St which is totally possible, it will look good he helped push them over the hump.

Baw gawd that's Coleman Scott's music!!

But that is at the same school, that’s why I made the Robie comment.  Of course we probably also shouldn’t count the chickens before they hatch in regards to Scott…

Obviously assistants and associate HC’s can get head coaching jobs, but I don’t think there’s any advantage to that if you’re already a HC, unless you are hoping to get the HC job at the school you’re going to, hence the Robie comment as I mentioned.

All the guys on your list had never been head coaches before.  And half of them were promoted at their own school.

Similar to the Coleman Scott discussion, the COL difference is likely a factor.  But I don’t think the move helps him get a different HC job unless there is a succession plan with Robie.

Oh and Columbia is not below average.  They finished above average this year including ahead of half of the coaches you listed.

If his goal is to take over a bigger program, what does he get out of leaving Columbia? He’s done a great job bringing that program up a few notches, why not continue until the HC opportunity he’s looking for opens up.

The only thing I can think of is if internally things at Columbia make it an unattractive place to continue coaching.

But I don’t really understand how going to VT as associate HC really helps him.

Also, I’m kind of surprised Frayer would not be the associate HC.

You have to imagine Columbia has donors brown wrestling raises the most money if any sport they offer. But coaching at an Ivy is going to have a lot more hoops and hurdles than a state school.

what Cornell does is nothing short of spectacular given the current landscape of college athletics(no transfers for Ivy, Greyshirt vs. redshirt, no 12 years eligibility) and the admissions rigor of the school.
