If you are European and know the names of dead grandparents on your mother and father's side, there are high odds that you are related within 11 generations of any other European.  Build out your tree, search up a dead person, select View My Relationship, and wazzup cuz... according to FamilySearch.  I've done this with coworkers, neighbors, kid's friends...

Fernandes is generally Portuguese, but so much stuff happens with spellings before, during, after immigration that I would be willing to believe it could be Spanish.
