Who's the best true freshman of 2023? Some options:

  • Jesse Mendez (14-6)
  • Caleb Henson (21-3)
  • Levi Haines (23-1)
  • Daniel Cardenas (22-1)

It has to be Haines after he knocked off the consensus #1

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

Cardenas make any noise at NCAAs? 22-1 but only has one quality win over Gfeller.

18-1 and four of those wins were over Stanford wrestlers.

1. Haines

2. Henson

At this point, I think it has to be Haines. Henson is a beast with quality wins over Sasso and Milner but Haines’ resume is a little better. That could change next week though

Calling Haines a "True Freshman" technically correct but is a bit of a misnomer as he skipped his senior year and has been training with NLWC, David Taylor /M2 and PSU for the last couple of years.

So why does that not make him a true freshmen?  He didn't red/gray shirt...he didn't skip a year in terms of age...he is chronologically what is considered a true freshmen.  Never understood trying to diminish someone.

Anyway, Haines, hands down, best TRUE freshmen year...so far.

I said he is. But he's had an extra year of college level training that others have not.

If you have one who served a church missionary tour for two years and then a hitch in the military they could come in at 24-25 years old as a True Freshman. Even if they wrestled a ton of tournaments while in the service, maybe even on a service team.

I believe #2 Haines (157) and #6 Cardenas (157) are the only true freshmen in the quarterfinals. Haines will face #7 Andonian, and Cardenas will face #3 Robb.

#13 Mendez (133) and #4 Henson (149) are still alive in the consolation bracket.

From the article below in 2021:  " Many collegiate wrestlers redshirt at some point in their careers, and Haines said that's a possibility for him since he's young for his grade. He's still 16 and will graduate high school at 17."

How old will Cody Chittum be when he finally sets foot on a mat in an Iowa singlet? Is he a RS this year, or taking a gray shirt? Will he be 21 or 22?

He will be 22 when he starts at Iowa. Pretty standard by now given how many Iowa guys finish their careers at age 25-27

And if he does 8 years like Jaron Smith, he will be a redshirt senior aged 30?
