Is Jax going U23 or U20 this year as well?   Is anyone?  It seems kind of unfair if you make seniors to also make a level below.

The U23 spot at 61 will be decided by whoever wins Final X between Jax and Blaze... both are still U20 eligible, but, neither is signed up for U20 WTT...

the reason U23 is automatically given to any age eligible wrestler who finishes top 3 at seniors was after schultz had to choose between seniors and U23 trials one year as they were held on the same weekend... he lost in the finals of seniors and missed out on even being given the chance to make the U23 team... it is a good rule...

now, USAW decided to set the Greco U20 team at Vegas and wrestle both U20 and Seniors at the same time thus not allowing any kids who are good enough to compete at seniors while still being age eligible for U20 a chance to make both teams... totally lame...

if a kid is good enough to make multiple teams why would anyone want to take that opportunity away from them?

If you are good enough for seniors then you should not be wasting time at age level. That is for development. If you can compete at the senior level then your age-level development has completed.

Here’s my predictions for the sign ups we have right now. You can sign up until like the day of but I don’t think there should be any super big late additions

57kg - Cortez

Pretty much the same field as the open and he already won that plus he’s sitting out to the finals. Obviously there’s a lot of studs that’s could win the mini tournament with multiple world champs and medalists in the field. So quite an advantage to sit out and not have to go through this field again. I’m interested in seeing what Cowboy RTC  can do. Ronnie Rameriz is at 57kg after being at 133/61kg and Zinkin are in.

61kg - Aaron Siedel

The Cortez brother is sitting out in the final, so Siedel will have to go through the mini bracket. This is a much smaller field than 57kg with only Dean Anderson being the biggest blue chipper in the field. I’ll take Siedel pretty handily going through this field.

65kg - Bo Bassett

Not much I have to say here. Bassett already blitzed through this whole field and the senior level field. Give me two techs against whoever. Who makes it through is interesting, I’ll take Wolbert but there’s a couple blue choppers in there that could make things interesting. Bonus little kikiniou is signed up after coming off a medal at u17s and making the u17 team this year as well.

70kg - Landon Robideau

He’s sitting out in the finals and I think he wins it. He already walked through this field at the open and almost took out Zain at WTT. Now Melvin Miller is in the field and could make things interesting. I think his down preformance at the open was due to Double bracketing. But a couple years ago we saw Landon was too much for Miller. Seth Mendoza looms as well after making the open finals. But give me Landon over miller in the finals.

74kg - Jayden James

After what he did at WTT I think it’s hard to pick against James. He already ran through the open but this is a different field with Lockett, Routledge and Howard now signed up. Last year Lockett took out James in two matches to zero. But I think with going through this field and what I think is a hard weight to make for Lockett. After another year of maturing and growing into 74kg. Give me James over Lockett.

79kg - Asher Cunningham

This would be a rematch of the Open finals, where Burton won and is sitting out to the finals. But if we know anything about PSU wrestler, their adjustments in a short period of time are elite. I think making weight is tough after being a 184 for the year. Asher is definitely less experienced in freestyle but I think he gets it done.

86 - Sinclair

Sinclair double bracketed and still walked through this field at the open. The mini bracket is interesting with a few new signs up who weren’t at the Open. Last years u17 team member Aaron Stewart and Cowboy commit Mikey White is in. Plus All American Brock Manantona is in as well. I think we see the winner of Brock vs White in the finals. But give me Sinclair versus whoever 2-0.

92 kg - Adam Waters

With high schooler Jimmy Mastny sitting out in the finals. This might be one of the more open weights in u20s. If I was a big 86kg guy I’d consider moving up to this weight. But Waters and AA Branson John are in the mini bracket. Both who weren’t in the field at the open. If waters is healthy I think he wins the whole things. But I think the winner of the mini bracket will go on to take the spot

97kg - Howle

Same with 92kg this field is pretty light. Only  6 wrestlers signed up and Howle walking through the Open. I think Howle takes this one handily.

125kg - Merrill

I think we see a repeat of the Open finals here. Merrill vs Ross. Merrill is sitting out and beat Ross in the final. With Merrill being so big and having a great style for freestyle. I think he takes this one again. Although Ross did seem to figure out some things at the end of the Open Final. I’m interested to see if Ross can make any adjustments to take out Merrill. Ross will have to go through a World Champ in Michael Mocco to get to Merrill

I predict Ethan Stiles outperforms e'Than Birden at 74 KG.

Curious to see Swiderski at 74 KG.  Would love to see him and incoming Michigan Frosh hit.  Both are from Dundee (Swiderski graduated year before Crosby was a Freshman).

u20's:
57kg: I am extremely excited about this weight, I have zinkin beating Ramirez in the challenge tournament and then taking out Cortez in the finals. There is a real likelihood Cortez is the class of the weight and I think a lot of time off the scale is good for him but I am probably zinkins #1 fan. This weight is very weak at seniors so I would expect the same at u20's barring a japan sensation out of nowhere so I like our chances to medal whomever comes out.

61kg: Seidel should run through this weight Cortez is great and really impressed at the open but I would be shocked if Seidel did not win gold this year at worlds.

65kg: Wolbert out of the challenge tournament falling to Bo but I expect it to be fun while it lasts, Wolbert was able to put up 4 last time they met and while he seemed to get lost in the handfight he certainly did not back down.

70kg: Mendoza over Miller and then Robideau over Mendoza. This weight rocks, I attribute Melvins open to being worn down from seniors but I think the world of Mendoza, and I think his pace and persistent attacking will allow him to run down Melvin late.

74kg: Lockett over Denny and James over Lockett. It was 2-0 Lockett last year one of the matches being a tech but when you compare the last two times we have seen each of these guys it is hard for me to pick Dee. That being said the kid is an unbelievable talent and if he took NCAA's to heart it may have unlocked a completely different beast, really excited for this one.

79kg: Burton over Cunningham, time off scale may help Cunningham though he is a big boy.

86kg: Sincalir over Mikey white, OKST bias maybe but another guy I am a huge fan of. Started wrestling in 9th grade has made incredible strides year over year, and now has been in a college room for a few months... watch out.

92kg: Branson john over Jimmy Mastny. Not a ton to add here I actually think that Waters will be Johns biggest test, this is what has become an abnormality where I am not going to go with youth over a college AA.

97kg: Boyle

125kg: Ross over Merill. I think the coaches will have a gameplan to have Ross manage the damage early, I also liked the ease in which he finished at the open. I think he figures things out over 3 matches and it sounds like he may be a bit bigger.

u23's:
57kg: Spratley

61kg: Bouzakis

65kg: Dalton Perry

74kg: Swiderski

a somewhat lazy Sunday morning, so, got to diving into entry lists for next weekend and which of the U23 World Team spots were still up for grabs...

Greco weights-

  • 55kg
  • 60kg
  • 82kg

Leg Grabbers-

  • 86kg
  • 92kg
  • 97kg
  • 125kg

not sure exactly what can be conferred from the info above, but, it was somewhat interesting to me...

thought our 3rd at seniors at 82kg had aged out of U23s, but, see his is registered for U23 so clearly i was wrong...

so, out of 10 weights at U23, only 2 weights did not have a top 3 finisher at Vegas and one of those our Senior rep from last year who just had a horrible Vegas and will be at U23...

not sure if making top 3 and the Senior national team means an athlete is "good enough" for seniors and should not be allowed for the "developmental" age groups or not...

I can see Ross leapfrogging Merrill in the next few years. I think Merrill is close to tapping out his physical potential while Ross still has that awkward teenager build and size.

Ross will have to approach wrestling entirely differently than he has his entire “career” to this point with new grounding rules to succeed internationally…

I could see Mocco getting up there too if he gets a bit bigger

U20:
57kg: Antonio Mills. Thought he looked decent at seniors and I think that bit of experience will help him greatly here

61kg: Seidel next topic

65kg: Bo Bassett next topic

70kg: Landon Robideau. I am excited to see Mendoza vs Melvin, which I think Melvin takes but would not be surprised to see Mendoza be in the best of three either

74kg: Jayden James. If he had 30 more seconds in that WTT finals, I fully believe he would be our 74kg senior team rep. Him vs Dee is going to be enlightening but he looks too sharp

79kg: Asher Cunningham. He will go down early but storm back as we have seen him do many many times

86kg: Aeoden Sinclair next topic

92kg: ZZZ... Jimmy Mastny I guess

97kg: ZZZ... Cason Howle, upset pick

125kg: Dreshaun Ross. Now full time in the OKST room, he will be prepped and warm to face his biggest rival and get his revenge

U23:
57kg: Troy Spratley

61kg: Nic Bouzakis
