Just when I thought this would be the farewell tournament for the Brands brothers, they prove me wrong and shut me the hell up.

2026 NCAA DI Men's Wrestling Championships for Iowa

  • 7 All-Americans (133, 149, 165, 174, 184, 197, HWT)
  • 3 Semifinalists (165, 174, 184)
  • 1 Finalist (165) - 33 Consecutive Years
  • Currently in fourth place with 92.5 points with a match to go
  • Currently ahead of Ohio State whose coach and wrestlers won B1G Coach of the Year, Wrestler of the Year, and Freshman of the Year

2026 Big Ten Wrestling Championships for Iowa

  • Fourth Place - 87 points
  • 1 Finalist (165), 2 Bronze (133, 141)
  • 9 NCAA Qualifiers

Regular Season

  • 12-6 (5-3 in B1G); losses to Iowa State, Minnesota, Ohio State (×2), OK State, Penn State
  • National Duals Invitational Finalists

Strong tournament for the Hawkeyes and they could leave with a trophy should Ohio State not leap them in the finals. So, while they under-performed throughout the year, they showed up big time when it mattered most.

So the Iowa standard is now, it's ok to poop the bed all regular season as long as we wrestle up to our capabilities at ncaas??? The Iowa standard shouldn't be changing. Still a downward trend

Full of un-bias blasphemy.

it will come down to dollars and cents in the end. How much was invested in 2026 and what did they get in return. A bad ROI could result in bye bye to tnt.

They over performed more than anyone would think. Only ppl that thought they could do this is the ones in the room, good for them. Especially after everyone was talking them down all year.

Yanni D to be asst coach in 2026/2027  ?

I have no idea how that would work. Iowa is so used to handfighting and staying in stance that it feels like they'd have to reinvent that mentality to get involved with more scrambles. Iowa should probably get someone that can help them open up more offensively, like a master at creating angles or something. Everyone was so gunshy this season except Caliendo. And we see the clear difference between him and his teammates

Coach Jimmy Cinnabon seems to make the most sense to me

They are gunshy because there bad offense leads to scrambles on the mat. And Iowa sucks at scrambling. Yianni D would help with that. He would help with recruiting too. The problem like you stated is the brands will have to be willing to learn from him, let him teach his own stuff, and not restrict yianni in what he teaches. Which is why this is all just a rumor so far.

Granted I continue to here more and more about it. Until Bobby telford is removed from the roster it's just a rumor.

Agreed with this, 100%. I do wonder if this season, as Tom even acknowledged being his worst season yet, will shift his perspective to make some changes - both staff wise and with his coaching approach. Now with Okie State being the clear #2 using a similar approach as Penn State with significant success, if he doesn't try something different now, he'll be out at Iowa and not on his own terms.

Yianni is the kind of guy who, if allowed to really coach what he knows best without restrictions, is a splash hire to help Iowa's overall scramble ability and recruiting appeal.

I know this is typically viewed as a far out there take, but from my aspect of it it really seems like the last 3 to 4 years or more. The brands have been trying to take a different approach and mirror. Penn state's however, I just feel as if the brands really struggle to do something when it's not ingrained in their core beliefs. Therefore, they have always had a tough time coaching against Penn State and I honestly think it has hurt the program when they try to coach like Penn State. Part of me feels as if they would have still had some pretty good regular season results had they always stuck to the brands's game plan and not shifted it up. The hard-working practices are no longer and I just feel like the brands were more successful when they coached their style.

I hope that bringing in somebody from the outside like yanni helps open their mind to how others are doing things. But I still question the Brand's ability to accept, learn, and teach stuff that they haven't learned on their own physically, if that makes any sense.

Hard to picture Yianni working under the Brands...just a huge personality clash there and difficult to see a world where Yianni is happy at Iowa with them in place but I guess you never know.

I can’t remember where I read it but there was an article that talked about their attendance issues. If those don’t improve and the results stay about the same then that spells trouble regardless of over performing at NCAAs this year.

A program like Iowa that actually generates ticket revenue losing a few thousand ticket holders per dual is a big hit. If they don’t get butts in the seats and they end up 4th or worse next year my guess is that’s a wrap.

The "Iowa Way" wasn't getting it done (nor was any other teams way). Had to try something. New stuff is hard.

New stuff is hard. It takes time, that's why sometimes it's easier to start with something fresh.

Tom will have a chance to turn things around when he bites the bullet fires his associate coach and hires a new one.  Even JS recognized the need to do such early on and continue mild reshuffling and bringing in new young talent.  There's a point though when you prob just cant relate as well to young high school kids and need to fire yourself ... see JS again.

Tom should've known kids hate shoveling snow. The prospect of this being the standard of their future relationship was just too much for Bo! Next time a sled or even Dodgeballs might have worked; but Bo went for something Hokie-er. Too bad there was no snow in June when Bo really wanted to play with Tom.
