This thread is pointing out the inaccuracy not things are spot on! A+ casing. I haven't seen the movie but as mentioned this is common in all "based on a true story" movies and I was surprised the list was so short.
-
ACC and Big 12 finals have also been broadcast on cable TV
-
And more people watched the Iowa/PSU dual than the B1G Finals, both on BTN.
-
I am not so sure. I have attended 2 B1Gs tournaments and I am not sure I will ever go back. It is really a qualifier and that's how teams treat it. It's common to have forfeits in the finals, not to mention on the backside. I don't think a true National Duals any where close to the Individual tournament is realistic, but now that everyone's approach is the "only thing that matters is March (NCAAs)" the conference tournaments aren't as material. Heck, PSU has dominated college wrestling recently, but has only won 4 of the last 10 B1G tournament champions. No one really cares.

125: McCrone dec Cruz 3-0 133: Ayala dec Bouzakis 3-3 141: Mendez TF Block 8-3 149: Parco dec D'Emilio 8-6 157: Sasso dec Estrada 11-6 OR 157: Teemer dec. The top teams bring legitimacy to the event. if the top 2 teams don't attend, the champs can call themselves whatever they want, it will be held in the same regard as the Navy Classic, MSU Open, Black Knight Open champs.

Yes, and in theory it's fine. It just doesn't seem like reality for a combat sport like wrestling vs a country club sport like golf. Coaches don't want to hold a dual tournament January, they are not signing off on a dual tournament a week or so after NCAAs.

I don't know that it will become "popular" but I think it has the chance to get more exposure from casual fans than the individual tournament. For example, It looks like more people watched the PSU/Iowa dual on BTN than the B1G championship last year https://ustvdb.com/networks/btn/shows/b1g-wrestling/ Having said that I don't want to change anything with the individual tournament, but I think there is merit that it could create more exposure. You would basically get the diehards and few casual fans of the teams competing but not enough that it would be "popular"

Can I make a counter counter point? Yes, your teammates can't help you on the mat, but they do help you more in the practice room and maybe more than other team sports like basketball or baseball. Your workout partners probably had more impact on your success than a baseball player who watches his teammate hit a home run. I would also agree that the when you have a dominant wrestler like Carter that the scoring isn't too top heavy but I don't think that is the case at most weights every year. For example, I don't think Richie Figs was 3 times as dominant as Jore Volk last year. Tournament scoring is top heavy. Last year, Cornell finished 2nd with 3 AAs and Nebraska finished 9th with 5 AAs. Likewise, dual scoring probably compresses the difference too much. A double OT win via riding time is worth 3 points while a 14 point win is only worth 1 additional team points.

I must of missed this as well. I thought people were critical of Brooks because they perceived his remarks as anti-Muslim more than just praising god. It seems very common for athletes in all sports to praise Jesus Christ, not sure who is arguing otherwise.
-
Sure you don't need every team to make a great event but it really helps if you have the best team/wrestlers. Right now, CKLV is the best in-season individual tournament and it typically occurs first weekend of December (2 weeks after the proposed National Duals Invite). Curious if teams will go to both or choose one over the other. CKLV could also move dates.

Normally for the doubleheaders, a beer or two during the first dual and then a nice whiskey/bourbon during the 2nd dual.
-
It was good run Pitt-Johnstown. Their Cinderella story ends before the top 5.

I understand this argument but this luck/variance is also the case in other sports as well. For example, NCAA basketball has buzzer beaters that determine who advances every year, a ball bounces a different way and a different team wins. PSU had a cornerback fall down that lead to a big TD for ND in the semifinal game that swung momentum and possibly the game. I think it is just rare for wresting fans since the double elimination individual tournament has some built in protections for variance/luck.
-
Yep, I think the correct line would be O/U 1 win. Okay, lets say the ~0.1% happens and Nebraska is up 15-0. How much will PSU win by ? My guess is would end 21-15 PSU.

Progress isn't always a straight line and it can take time. Taylor and Cam have been working together for 6 months? Let's see how he looks at the end of the year.
-
I don't think anyone is suggesting changing the escape point. I don't see how the match would be tied? A has 13 points and B has 5 points in your example, a MD not a tie? I would be in favor of making a reversal 3, but I don't feel strongly about it. Basically only matters if A gets a TD and B reverses and then finishes the period on top would there be a tie. If A gets an escape after getting reversed he is then up 1, they are in natural but the guy who got the TD is still rewarded.

I know the Wisconsin fans are hoping Bono is gone and they can replace him with a huge upgrade, but if Wisconsin cared about winning in wrestling, he would of probably been fired prior to this season. Most likely the AD doesn't want to prioritize the funds for wrestling and, if he ever does fire Bono won't replace him with a huge name/$$$. Best case is I would guess they give it to Reader.

When AJ was off the mat for months/years, I had my doubts he could come back. If he is able to spend a full season in a college room, I expect he will look better in March than he did the first few months of the year after the long layoff, plus there isn't a Brooks/Star type guy at 197. I don't know how close he will get to his true freshman form, but it seems like a lot of people are counting him out.

Why do fans tolerate poor broadcasting?
Dogbone replied to Alces Alces Gigas's topic in College Wrestling
It's not like there is an abundance of quality wrestling announcers out there and someone is saying let's use these kids instead. I look at as I am paying to watch the matches, I don't pay for the commentary. Usually the tournament coverage early rounds (B1Gs, Soldier Solute, Midlands) don't even have commentary, just the arena sounds. Plus, by using these kids its getting they get more announcers proficient at it and more people learning about wrestling. No one is going to be great their first time. When the student broadcast first started, Nebraska had a terrible one that got made fun of on boards for his lack of knowledge, but the more student broadcast that happen the better the "kids" are getting. -
Staying downtown and plan to use public transit over to the arena. Will see how it goes.

Stalling -- Backing out vs Pushing out -- Downey v Taylor
Dogbone replied to BAC's topic in College Wrestling
With the stalling rules, a lot of guys (Taylor in this instance) are trying to score points by getting stalling points instead of winning offensive exchanges. -
It was really on 2 guys that are cutting down, Pinto and Allred, neither have AA'd yet. Wilson and Taylor were returning to their natural weights. That was Allred's first loss of the year. He didn't look as good in the regular season at 197 last year either after he won the B1G his freshman year. Pinto doesn't look as strong or the same, but he did just avenge a loss from CKLV. I'd say jury is still out, but their results seem comparable.

Does every school have a succession plan or just Iowa need one? The reality is, while Iowa fans (or any other fan base) might not like being behind PSU, Brands is doing a good enough job to be retained. We are not that far removed from the 2021 National Championship (and favorites at the 2020 had it been held). Brands seems to still a have passion for the job so it doesn't seem like he will retire soon. And if the Iowa standard is you have to beat PSU, then they may not like the results they get after Brands either.
