Sigh, it amazes me how awkwardly and stubbornly people cling to being the angry chip on shoulder wrestling people. For a sport like wrestling to be added to a major university. Even if you get a looser interpretation of Title IX.. if you don’t approach adding a program it from presenting the equity aspect and women’s wrestling. You just tanked any chance of it succeeding in adding a wrestling team. People can squawk and whine all they want. That’s the reality. Schalles put it perfect on his blog. Wrestling coaches need to stop acting like “playing politics” is something dirty. Besides a good chunk of the problems are wrestlings fault. Football and Basketball coaches became ADs principals and on the NCAA and state associations. Outside what are very clearly exceptions not the norm… Wrestling coaches stayed in their classroom and called everyone soft. Even if the court rules how you want.. it won’t do what you seem to think it will

In the alumni emails Ruschell talks a lot about being “gritty” and “tough” and wrestling hard more so than creating offense. UTC is in a weird spot recruiting wise. They aren’t really appealing to most of the actual elite kids from the south. They mostly go to the ACC and around the country. They used to make a living out of getting those tough one timers/multi time placers from Indiana, PA, and Ohio. That usually would win socon or qualify. But they seem to have stopped really recruiting up north. They have a strong alumni base, so the program should be safe but not the kind that can donate Iowa, PSU, ivy money. They seem to be caught in a weird in between spot. Between not completely awful not actually good. Mediocre I guess. Hopefully they can get it on track

I usually don’t have a problem getting stuff my kids need with my admin. But. The doubling the cost makes it harder. Though I have brought “large orders” that were on the fence.. then I mentioned “we don’t have a mat that is our school colors or have our logo and can we look into getting one?” Admin: ”Don't they cost 5-10 grand?” Me: “well yeah, but the fb Coach mentioned it that we don’t have one” admin: “how much was your equipment order?” me: “3500” admin: “go ahead and send me the invoice for that”

I should have emphasized that “recently” they’ve been better. Last year and before Covid they were awful. Our Football coach almost lost his head because he didn’t have enough helmets. BSN ticks me off because outside uniforms and practice gear I’m stuck using them. I’m in a large urban district. So we have to use registered “vendors”. You can add vendors, like I helped goearnit get added when we got warmups. But there’s not really any one we can add that sells the other equipment we need so we’re stuck with BSN. So instead of getting wrestling shoes for 50-60 a pair. I had have to spend 110 a pair because BSN is the only place my school can buy them from

Ironically BSN doesn’t suck as much anymore and I’ve noticed that wrestling gear companies don’t always anticipate the sheer volume they actually have to handle and smaller school orders take the hit/delay. I’ve seen it happen with goearnit and barbarian and both are run by Good dudes

I’m curious how how the out of state teams will adjust to the different weights Ohio is using with 13/12? Weights. I was told making sure descent plans wouldn’t be jacked up by going to the different weights was a whole saga

The reducing weights is just covering the problem not actually addressing it. I’d rather have more chances for kids to compete. An actual rule that would help make dual meets better is go with 10-11 weights for duals and 14 for tournaments. You could even let coaches decide what weights will go and have a rule forbidding picking weights that deliberately pick up a forfeit for cheap points. Also, more coaches need to be willing to bump kids up as needed to make sure the duals are settled as much as possible by actual wrestling instead of taking forfeits then doing “exhibitions. Thankfully the trend in HS at least has been towards shorter tournaments. Who will you put in charge of it then? Because while most coaches are short sighted, people who know aren’t don’t know wrestling and make weird decisions ill comment on last paragraph later

Im going to make a couple tentative predictions as a non penn state fan. Just based off what Cael has done. 133 - 1st 141 - will Penn State peak to a 5-8th 149 - I think SVN will be top 3. 165 - I think Facundo is on a more Nick Lee/RBY trajectory with a low 5-8 finish first then top two after this year. 174 - 1st, I want to see him wrestle the senior level more 184 - 1st 197 - 5-8th, I doubt he gets the close or blatant calls two years in a row. 285 - Kerk is winning it I think they’re going to run away with the title again. for Iowa, 125 - Lee might Semi-Slide based off what I’ve seen 141 - 4-8th 149 - going with heart not head and 7th 157 - they should put Chittum out while they have Lee but I see 7-8th right now at best 165 - R12-8th 174 - 6-8th 184 - unfortunately R16-R12, rooting for him though 197 - 5th 285 - 2-4th i think Iowa State might be competing for a team trophy this year or next I reserve the right to reevaluate and redo my picks in January.
