Freestyle Pantaleo today is a very different beast than 2018 folk Pantaleo. Still can't believe he won't be wrestling this weekend.

It’s not that par terre is ignored so much as it is not the primary instrument of scoring anymore. In freestyle if you’re being a bum they give the opponent a point because defending in par terre, globally, is easier (read: not easy, just easier) whereas in greco it is a destructive difference maker. Just a difference of styles and rule sets. eg greco Passivity? Good luck not getting teched. It’s going to hurt at best and you’re going for a ride at worst. FS lace techs happen, but they don’t start in PT as punishment anymore for a reason. Less time is spent in par terre in FS because it is only a fragment of each match typically. Also, freestyle requires more subtleties such as defending an entire body and “do I give up one or two or four?” Whereas high level greco is decided by multiples of ones and the occasional YouTube highlight which is much more rare than folks think. And yes, greco specialists have almost always had better gutwrenches. But they can’t defend a lace to save their life in the same vein. So tomato, tomahto, it’s a wash and best to appreciate each style. No matter what at least we can all agree that anything better than ball grabs and clinches, right?

Doing what they do is impressive for anyone period. But throw in the tall barriers of entry being an Ivy League program (and RTC) takes it to a whole ’nother level. Koll started something great and Grey is continuing that tradition. Big kudos to Big Red.

Super bummed that Kannon Webster was defeated by Mendez. Bummed that littlest Braunagel was upset. Most salty that Hopke didn’t make it out of the bracket. I’m a BIG believer and I thought he would handily dispatch Carroll, who I’m still rooting for as an IL kid.

The weird thing about Askren is he is a boomer conservative. All about receiving a fair slice of the pie right up until it was his money in the bank and then, well... For as much as he gives back to our sport and has, in my opinion, the best outlook on how to approach kids wrestling and somehow simultaneously also successfully grows elite-level wrestling he sure does have some funky ways about him.

Maybe the finals of the Big 12 tourney. Even with it being a thinner pool than '22 and '23 the chance of either of them being in the semis is very slim. Will likely be fighting for their AA life in the blood round... and they may run into each other depending on how the bracket shakes out. Oh and don't forget Steveson might show up for 3 weeks next year (B1G and NCAAs) if he gets a good enough NIL offer.

NQ at 285 from Big 12 isn't exactly difficult. If you can win your wrestleoff then there is a good chance you've made it - they somehow earned EIGHT AQs last year out of 13 teams. Hendrickson took 3rd, Elam 6th, Schuyler R12, then a steep shove off the cliff for everyone else by Friday morning. Carroll took one look at the B1G landscape and noped right out of that competition.
