One theory could be that winning medals indicates a level of "seriousness", and perhaps in-country popularity of a given style. And the fact that a given style's medals are won by higher population nations could be construed as one statistical indicator of overall global popularity. Median population (not mean) of Olympic medal-winning nations by style: Women's freestyle: 125 million Men's freestyle: 65 million Greco: 19.5 million Average/mean population per medal would skew even much more strongly toward freestyle.2 points

We need more 10 to 15 second matches in college. Will fans demand a refund if 10 of these in a row?2 points

I dont even understand why jacori and Iowa think theyre a good match. Jacori has a bad gas tank and backs up an insane amount. Hes not iowa style at all. I appreciated his points at ASU but his style is soooo frustrating to watch.2 points

"he may have never reached the height he did" Hardly anybody follows Olympic freestyle. The height of wrestling is winning NCAA titles. From my perspective, Cejudo never did reach the height he could have had he wrestled in college.2 points

When you look at the kinds of early folk wrestling from around the world, you don't find leglaces anywhere. Leglaces look like two fish flopping on the deck of a trawler. Where did that come from? In other countries, there was a lot of upper body, with some regions also allowing tripping, but leg attacks are not common. Take Sumo or Mongolian Bökh wrestling as examples. You can do a leg attack in Sumo now, but you are likely to be crushed to the ground. Some countries like Turkie developed belt wrestling, and others, like the Swiss had special pants. No leg attacks, grab the belt or special pants to throw your opponent or throw him off balance. Leg attacks are mostly an American thing. I blame Dan Gable, mostly. Abraham Lincoln was old school using throws. Abe was the OG. The most famous image of wrestling in the history of history, at least in the Western Hemisphere, which is the greatest Hemisphere in the history of history, is Hercules holding Antaeus off the ground so his strength couldn't be replenished by touching his mother: Earth. There are more statues and etchings and paintings of this single wrestling hold--a Greco hold--than there are pictures of Kim Kardashian on the internet. Okay. That's probably not true. But in the spirit of this thread, I refuse to do my own research! Screw it! As Genghis Khan used to say, but in an entirely different language, and usually with a goat leg in his mouth: "Are you the Greco guy, or are you afraid of the Greco guy?"2 points

My least favorite thing about freestyle is the chest wrap or head pinch off a shot to a cheap tilt to score. Just feels like it’s rewarding bad wrestling and the non-offensive guy. I know that’s technically not true but it drives me nuts watching it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

With another cycle of Olympic Wrestling in the books followed by the inevitable traditional quad annual should we switch to freestyle brigade choir. I just wanted to remind everyone Folkstyle wrestlers are superior to Freestyle wrestlers1 point

I bet the national participation in the USA is the highest in the world. I would further bet it is the highest by a good margin. We just push athletic participation at a much higher rate than most large nations.1 point

It’s one thing if Harris came out and explained why she’s radically shifted from her entire 2020 platform. Then voters can decide for themselves if they believe her. It’s quite another for random campaign leaks to frame her as a moderate with completely different positions and then, while she refuses to answer any questions, for the press to just pretend the previous positions she herself adopted don’t exist and all that matters is the leaks. In fact, the refusal to do interviews and answer questions should be treated as evidence that she hasn’t shifted at all and is just trying to deceive the public about her actual positions. Especially since if she gets elected there will be no pressure on her to maintain the more moderate positions since she was never forced to publicly defend/explain.1 point

Broken record for the blue glasses crowd. Iowa isn’t paying them. Any more than Carl isn’t paying their slew of ncaa finalist : champion : aa transfers.1 point

The cost to Iowa is what $0? Iowa isn’t paying NIL….. external donors are…. At least that’s what I thought. Also… the blue psu sunglasses often forget psu dips into the transfer pool a bit too. kerk. Dean. Truax. Messenbrink. Ngao to name a few. Some of those are ncaa champions / finalists.1 point

Give a team an elite recruit/transfer and you feed them for a season (or at least a semester). Teach a team to recruit and you feed them for many years.1 point

I wanted to stick up for Greco and the ever-exciting Kamal Bey here, ionel, and I also wanted to add a little entertainment value, but I did not have as a sub-motivation any attempt to inject the fear of ILLINI and ILLINOIS high school kids' Greco abilities into the minds of their opponents. That was not part of the plan. In fact, that psychological ship has sailed. Everybody knows by now that if you are wrestling an ILLINI or a kid from ILLINOIS there is the chance that he will throw you, and there is a chance that it will be so spectacular that the newspaper headlines in Champaign the next day will read: "VIOLENT ASSAULT UP 50% IN ILLINOIS LAST NIGHT." But, I don't need to beat that dead horse.1 point

Yeah but Iowa isn't unique in this regard. They just have a lot of money for people who recruit poorly.1 point

Little known fact: Abe never accepted a point for a pushout. This is I'm sure disappointing news for @flyingcement but if our greatest President didn't approve of the pushout rule ... He also never wrestled on horse hair, Resilite or astro turf.1 point

(Cannon was supposed to make it 5) although 3 of 4 AA's were transfers1 point

Ha ha, I have only been to JFK in NY, so that does not count. No VT, CT, ME, RI, MA, NH, WV. I think we went to PA when we visited my aunt and uncle in DC. We got some Amish furniture at the place they were made. I remember doing that but don't remember where it was. So maybe on PA. I think I have been in or driven through most others. Been all over the west. Been many places in the mid west. But the East, not really all that interested, except for Boston maybe or upstate NY. Been to Sturgis during Sturgis on accident with my young family. That was an experience. Thought we'd see the Black Hills and Mt Rushmore. Saw that, motorcycles, Crazy Horse Monument, motorcycles, the Badlands, fell in love with the Black Hills, motorcycles and more motorcycles. The motorcycle people were really nice and I was really impressed by them. In the Badlands saw a sod house like the one my wife's grandpa grew up in. Eye opener for sure!! mspart1 point

Where was this discussion when JB, DT, Dake, Snyder, Gable, Gilman, Green, Yianni, Cox, etc. were bringing home international medals? Call me a cynic, but I don't think it makes any difference whether the NCAA adopts free or folk. Imo, the US Men's Soccer team is a pretty good analogue for US MFS. Fans used to say that our soccer team wasn't successful at the Olympics and World Cup because we had insufficient youth development and didn't play an "international style" to compete with Euro & LATAM teams. Well, that's been fixed for a few generations now and US Men's Soccer still doesn't get the results, so now we cast blame at our coaching, the officiating, media coverage, VAR, travel, everything else. It's easy to imagine the same thing happening to USA Wrestling if we change to freestyle, as if it was some sort of panacea, and don't dominate the medal table. Maybe, like soccer, it's just a highly developed sport globally with a lot of parity at the highest level? Re-wrestle the same Olympics brackets and no one would be surprised if we took 0 or 5 golds in MFS.1 point

So you are suggesting it doesn't take any time to learn freestyle and become the best?1 point

Why would anyone need to give up their NCAA title for an Olympic gold? What possible benefit could there be to giving up the title? Pico is the last guy mentioned and he fell down the ladder the further he got away from his decision to pass up wrestling in college. Our young guys are better than ever, and there is zero to suggest that folkstyle wrestling is holding them back.1 point

I think Marsteller is probably his biggest obstacle to a world gold. Stylistically, JB has struggled a bit against guys like him that can hold position and don’t let him wrestle from space. Marstellar has recently committed to getting bigger and wrestling 86, so we aren’t sure what he’s going to look like at 79 (I don’t think it should be too much of a problem though). Plus, It’s a little different now that JB isn’t “the guy” so maybe JB’s game plan will be as good as Marstellers was. You never know, but I’m not counting out JB. He is not in his prime, but his prime was so high that he is still incredibly elite. People keep comparing him to himself from 10 years ago and think he’s not as good. That may be true, but no one in the world at 79 kg is even close to as good as 2014 Burroughs (assuming Dake and some of the other heavy hitters aren’t there). I think 2024 Burroughs is close enough that he could win another world championship this year.1 point

I see it playing it out this way. Cstar wrestles a more limited schedule than any other competitor at psu….. defaults out of big 10s again. Gets penalized by the seeding committee and Nabs the 7 seed. He doesn’t take a photo with the team or stay for the finals. Ferrari goes 5-0 on the season. Wins the pac 12 and somehow nabs the 23 seed…. Pisses off everyone. they have to wrestle in the r16 bout on Thursday night…. This forum has a post that is 891 pages long and Kentucky mudflap comes out of retirement.1 point
