Story broke 23 hours ago... @flyingcement.

thanks chappy.  I will check it out.

While I still have no details, I'd like to speculate about the possibility that this was being done in an otherwise honest way (getting a discount on stuff from his wife instead of paying a premium), but did not go through the proper channels for approval, which what caused the investigation.  If thats the case, they would likely reinstate him with a small slap on the wrist.

“No documented cases exist of Division I (D1) sports coaches being suspended specifically for violating an apparel contract with Nike or other prominent companies such as Adidas or Under Armour.”

There’s always the first suspension. First lawsuit….

so he is the dumbest coach in D1?

Oh, I'm sorry, what was that about Raiola's transfer NIL minimum, since he's a B1G athlete?

Agree that this probably wasn't some kind of devious scheme Poeta masterminded, but still, ignorantia legis neminem excusat and such. It was pretty dumb of him.

I'm a municipal employee and I would receive consequences for something similar and the municipality doesn't even have a Nike contract.  I see a lot of people pointing fingers at evil Nike and the NCAA, but the fact of the matter is: you can get in trouble just about anywhere with conflicts of interest such as this.  I'm sure he has had to receive mandated training every year he has been there.  I know I do.

Exactly! I work for a big bank and I had to get "permission" to officiate HS wrestling, to make sure there wasn't A CONFLICT OF INTEREST.

You're not wrong, I'm just calling out the hypocrisy. Did you guys see that a former 2023 NBA first round draft pick is going to play for Baylor spring semester?

But sweatshirts are the line. Ooookayyyyy

Players (employees) and coaches (managers) have diff levels of responsibility.

buying shit from your wife is pretty dumb.   That’s a period.  End of story.   Especially if your a manager : coach : administrator.   Again. I don’t like the ncaa but it’s like he got a tourism degree from psu and not a real degree from u if I.

I thought the claim was violation of his employment contract, not NCAA violations. Is the Nike-exclusive deal with NCAA or with the individual schools?

He did screw up by buying non licensed equipment/gear.   The schools are fanatical in support of their trademarks and sponsors.  They will pursue any type of copyright infringement down to house clocks, mousetrap, and birdhouse.   lol

I hope they don't fire Mike over this unfortunate incident.

A two week unpaid suspension would be fine imo.

What the heck was he thinking?
