What's the ripple affect from this?

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine

And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung

Would you hear my voice come through the music?

Would you hold it near as it were your own?

If you look at Henson's interview on Flo from the other day, it's pretty clear that this wasn't his preference.

I kind of wonder if this was an implied part of the Bassett/Miller deal.  If you're Bassett's dad, you probably really want your kid to get the benefit of a year in the room with Henson -- and he probably made that clear in the recruiting process.  No doubt Bassett will benefit hugely from that.  I'm not sure Henson does, especially up at 157, and I'm not sure the VT lineup benefits much from this move.

But Henson seems like a team guy, and in fairness, the VT program is probably benefitted overall by having a guy like Henson in the room for an extra year.

Henson was a huge 149 and lacked no size at 70kg this summer.

Agree 157 is going to be absolutely brutal next year though comparatively.

I asked this question about Henson redshirting in the Bassett thread but didn’t actually think it would happen lol.

Seems like VT could have a very solid lineup in 2027 but would still be counting on some yet unproven guys and only Henson and Ventresca having achieved AA status thus far.

125 Ventresca

133 Seidel

141 Crook/Church

149 Bassett

157 Henson

165 Gaj

174 Desiante

184 ?

197 Sasso

285 Mullen

Edit:  it’s interesting how wrestlestat will predict future weights.  They actually show Church as dropping from 165 to 141 for 2027, but that seems unlikely…

Melvin Miller wasn’t a holdback was he?  Any chance he graduates this year and joins them?

I mean, why wouldn’t he want this? He gets another year of essentially being a pro athlete plus the benefits of being a student-athlete. Seems like a good deal to me.

Trying to figure out how Ventresca is still wrestling in a college room in 2027.  Poked around on the VT website and saw that he is a redshirt junior now.  Does he fall under the time period for the COVID year?  And he ever get an injury redshirt for the 2024 season?  Cuz if both were the case, it looks like he would be with VT til 2028... wow

No covid year, but seems like he should probably be able to get a medical RS for 2024.  He only wrestled 5 events and none after 12/1

Wow, pretty surprised by this move. Henson a pretty big favorite at 149. I don't think VT is a top 4 team with Henson in the lineup next year.

This opens up 149 even more, with SVN being a favorite, but not overwhelming. Maybe Hardy moves up to 149 even though he has given Mendez fits in the past? Don't see many guys 141/157 flooding to 149.

I don't see anyone moving weights because of this.  Yes, 149 is now a lot easier (congrats SVN!) but I doubt anyone was staying away from Henson to wrestle Mendez and everyone seems to have the defending 157 champ behind Kasak and Shapiro so I doubt anyone who could make 149 was choosing 157.

I would also think this is more of a VT team decision than Bassett request.  Punt on this season and try to get a trophy in 2027.   Presumably Henson would be in the room post grad so it should not change how Bassett does but it will add more team points for VT in 2027.

Crook is a large human for 141. Wouldn't be surprised to see Bo and Crook flipped, with Bo going 141.

Why are people suggesting that SVN is lucky that Henson is taking a RS?

He's 1-0 against Henson, in a match that would be scored 7-3 under the new 3pt TD rules.

Also, SVN is a massive favorite over people who are currently in the field. The only guys who beat him last year either went up in weight or graduated.

I think it’s fair to say that SVN is “lucky” in the sense that Henson seemed to be his toughest competition by far, but I do disagree with the prior post calling Henson a “pretty big favorite,” it probably would have been a tossup IMO between those 2.

I could see other guys from 141 or 157 bumping or dropping though since 149 doesn’t appear to have all that much top end talent after SVN now.  Maybe Kannon Webster as he wrestled 149 last year?  Vombaur?

Webster was an absolutely gigantic 149. He fell apart on the second day at NCAAs. Another year of 149 would be rough for him.

I won't be surprised in the slightest if Webster ends his career at 165. He is currently slated to end his career the same year he would likely be going 74 at OTT.

He definitely has the frame for it, IMO.

I'll go even further - I think if he pursues a senior career I could see him eventually land in a 79 frame depending on how the anticipated 165/74 bulk goes.

Still smaller than Henson lol

I think this was a bad take, Henson is part of the SERTC so he’d be in the room anyway. Henson is a big 49 and wrestled 70 kg (154) this summer. Next year VT will have a 1-2 punch of Bo and Henson. They’re going all in next year
