It's interesting that fish oil is mentioned. One of the key components of fish oil is DHA (please note the similarity to 'DHEA'), short for 'docosahexaenoic acid', which is an omega-3 fatty acid with reported health benefits. Many of these fish oil supplements have 'DHA' printed right on the front of the label (along with 'EPA', which is the other major health component in fish oil). Trying to read between the lines, I immediately took the fish oil reference to mean that Brooks mistook DHEA for DHA. No idea if that's what his did was really implying, but it was my first thought.

I say forgive him then.  I once took what I thought was storoids, but it turned out it was full blown steroids.   Crazy.  I was so close to making the Olympic team.  I know they said I have to be careful what I put in my body.  My lawyer said it was an honest mistake and you know…..  My coach is super humble awesome and a legend.   He was also a world renowned Buddhist.  Don’t know why that matters but it does.  I was so mad when they didn’t believe me.

i have to contradict you now, according to Grok, DHEA would mimic testosterone and its derivatives (in a testing sense not a performance sense obviously). I agree it’s a sugar pill, but one he probably is only pretending his took. Looks like he's lying

If a suspension becomes official, isn’t it usually announced what substance they tested positive for?

Look at all the people making excuses for a guy who tested positive twice in less than a year...

Seriously, this has gotta be the biggest takeaway.  This test needs to also cast major doubt on his first test which he largely got a pass for.

Oh, I don’t believe it was an honest mistake. Just that I saw their excuse already being formed.

How cool! (Your job, not Grok's suction ability). I'mlve been debating which local LLM to run on my machine. Do you have any suggestions? I have 64gb ram, 16gb of latest gen vram, 8 core 16 thread AMD processor

You must be in high demand!

Demand is overrated and what people think is AI is actually nothing more than Language Learning Machines (LLMs). Remember the metaverse? It's like that except for replacing customer service and some automation (but not as much as is claimed - many claims are there as an excuse to execute mass layoffs)

Mistral Large for code review on passion projects.

Claude is generally very effective for everything else but the hallucinations drive me nuts when over-prompted.

The best running leaderboard imo is https://aider.chat/docs/leaderboards/

I explained the situation to Chat GPT and asked it to formulate an excuse for a press release (I didn't mention Brooks by name, but said he was religious):

To my supporters, teammates, and the sporting community,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that a recent USADA test found a banned substance in my system. I want to be completely transparent about the circumstances that led to this.

Earlier this year, I underwent a minor orthopedic procedure and was hospitalized with pneumonia. During my recovery, I turned to various over-the-counter supplements to support my healing process — all of which I purchased legally and in good faith from a local grocery store. Unfortunately, one of those supplements contained a substance prohibited by Olympic standards, though it is legally sold and available to the general public.

I take full responsibility for what has happened. I did not check thoroughly enough with my medical and nutrition team, and for that, I am deeply sorry. I would never knowingly or intentionally compromise the integrity of sport or disrespect the values I hold dear.

As a devout Christian, I turn to scripture during this difficult moment:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” — James 1:2-3
This is a test I did not expect, but I accept it with humility and faith. I will cooperate fully with USADA and any governing bodies to resolve this matter justly.

To the young athletes who look up to me: let this be a reminder to remain vigilant. Always read every label, and seek wisdom in every choice, even the ones that seem minor.

I am committed to clearing my name through the proper channels and, more importantly, continuing to live and compete with integrity, passion, and purpose.

Thank you for your prayers and continued support.

Anything new from today’s podcasts?  Or just an endless rehash with lots of repetition, complaints about lack of concrete info, and parroting of excuses?

10 minutes into FRL and the crew has been really keen on trying to make all the positive cases for why this might not be a case of cheating lol. No one has brought up masking agent yet. JD is the only one that has been pushing against what seems to be the company line a bit

Edit: gotta pretend to do some work this morning so I won't be able to finish the episode

I gotta disagree, thought they've gone pretty hard so far...relative to how most wrestling media plays.

Good to know! I joined a few minutes late and was only half listening for the little bit of time I had available. Will relisten to it this evening

They've basically kind of gone after the specific athletes but defended the program, I think they've been bad when discussing the Starocci article.

Hate to say it but I saw this coming back in 2018. We were at World Championships in Budapest heading to our hotel from the event about 10pm and saw Aaron Brooks ahead of us. At that time, he had committed to PSU but was still out in Colorado Springs. He jumped the turnstile to the Subway without paying (when he thought nobody was watching). I turned to my brother and said, "Now there's a dude who will have no problem using PEDs."

For the record, we would have jumped it too, but our fat a$$es would have ended up on an Insta bloopers reel so we paid.

Bad, as in milquetoast?

If a star swimmer went public with these types of allegations against a teammate, there would be hollerings of toxic team culture and/or statements about the coach losing control of the program. And that would happen even to programs/swimmers with pristine reputations. Curious how so many people are willing to play vigorous defense for Carter "Graveyard exterior designer" Starocci

I have to say that (alleged) oil checking and 5 on 2s would be even more reprehensible in a swim practice!

Fair enough. This isn't a fair equivalent but the type of bullying I was witness to during swim practice included: kicking vigorously in the face of someone during kickboard sets, vigorously dolphin kicking into someone's chest or abdomen during a flip turn and streamline, yanking on somebody's ankle to pass them, smacking a swimmer across the face during butterfly sets intentionally.

Shower/locker room shenanigans ended up causing a very prominent club to shut down and disband in my state when I was in high school.

I have heard tell they are standard techniques in water polo.  Apparently everybody leaves the pool with hands that smell of chlorine and 10W30
