Penn State - a big, tough football player saw a kid being abused in the shower.

He did NOTHING to stop it, only told Coach Paterno about it.

Ohio State - a Ref says he was accosted in the showers.

He did NOTHING to stop it, only reported it.

What is wrong with these turkeys?

Wouldn't anyone watching a kid be abused step in and beat hell out of the attacker? IF not sure about your strength, wouldn't you start yelling, grab a chair or something and try to beat hell out of the rapist?

An adult Ref is accosted - and doesn't fight back. Doesn't start yelling and try to kill his attacker?

What is wrong with these people?

They were probably put into a state of shock.

I don't know,  but many people looked the other way to avoid scandal.

How'd that work out?

Can you tell me before I watch it?

Short answer,

He targeted kids who were from small towns and depended on scholarships to be there. Nobody ever swung on him because he was an extremely well respected doctor and, in their minds, nobody was going to believe a child over an incredibly liked and tenured professor of medicine. So some kept quiet.

Many did speak up. Near 200 formal complaints had been filed, when it was all said and done, and the school didn't do anything about it. Actively covered it up. This includes Jim Jordan.

This incident (Strauss) didn't involve children.  The victims were student athletes.

200 complaints is wild. I think that's on the school. Even if Jim Jordan knew(seems like everyone knew), why does it matter? Plenty of complaints were ignored before, during, and after he was there. And why are you using the word child?

I know a guy who got paid out from this debacle. I heard the guy would give you hernia exams when you came in for a sprained ankle and he would show up and shower with the team for no apparent reason - he probably fondled himself while in there. Definitely class action worthy.

And this is totally unsubstantiated, but this whole thing kicked off from statements from Mike DiSabato, and rumors were that this was a way to get to Jim Jordan because his company, Cage Fighter, was losing a ton of business to Rudis - both Ohio companies that were outfitting wrestling teams across the state. He was going on CNN and making a ton of personal attacks. This does not diminish the reality of the situation, but I always thought that was interesting.

Dang, defending Strauss right now is crazy work.

I said, in their minds, they were children and he was a well respected dr. They said it in the doc. He targeted freshmen kids who JUST got to campus. I guess TECHNICALLY they were adults in that they were 18, but I'm curious to wonder why you think that makes it ok?

I do seem to remember a lot of bashing of DiSabato when the story first broke.

There was also an implication that he was giving them steroids (possibly unknowingly to the athletes) and that if he was reported he would then report them for steroids (and in fact the doc said he did file a counter-complaint against one of the staff that filed a complaint against him)

Im not defending the unethical and obviously immoral Dr. Strauss. The guy was a disgrace to the profession and the University.

However, no one thinks an 18 year old is a child.  Can children vote in elections or be drafted into war?

Now do the Catholic church with its thousands of abused children.

There isnt any need for whataboutisms or comparisons. This thread is about the Ohio St abuse scandal. If you wanna talk about the Catholic church one start a new thread. They can both be horrendous situations.

To start a thread Jimmy needs a way to tie in one of these schools; PSU, Iowa, Ok State, Mich, tOSU.  His range is limited

The OP asked how certain individuals could witness abuse yet not stop it directly.  The answer is the same for the thousands (possibly tens of thousands) of people in the Catholic church who either witnessed or had knowledge of such abuse yet did very little about it.

Don’t forget the Mich. St. gymnastics doctor who will never get out of prison.  Bottom line is there are bad people everywhere so people must always be aware and observant.  Teach your children and loved ones the same.  If you or someone you know feels uncomfortable with something report it to the appropriate authorities.  If no satisfactory action is taken accordingly, then go to the law authorities, newspapers, media, whoever it takes to seek justice.
