I love Metcalf.  My personal favorite Hawkeye.  He has not shown himself to be an elite level coach or recruiter.

I attribute some of that to working under Dresser, but my feeling is that Metcalf, DSJ, Ramos are well-positioned to carry forward the best aspects of Iowa Style wrestling and while improving the room & culture. Recruiting and development can be improved with the right assistants -- Brands could do that right now if he wanted to -- but if there's a change at the top, someone like Metcalf would be much better set up for success than an outsider like DT, Dake, or Steveson. I'm not convinced that Iowa needs a complete overhaul, or that the program or its fans wouldn't find it too jarring. There's lots of upside, but the downside is that it would put the new coach on a very short leash and put the program in a hire & fire cycle if they don't immediately produce results.

I think you're misremembering Tony's first three years.  He was very aggressive.

Don't know about that, but I'm sure my aggression expectations slide with all the mouth running....

In your esteem who's higher as of today, Caliendo or Ramos....no "I can't tell he hasn't graduated" BS

Higher in my personal estimation?  Tony Ramos.  I'm not sure anybody has lit up Carver like Tony did in pinning Conaway, pinning Gulibon the next year, and beating JO straight up, no flukes.  Epic.  Plus he has the title, and he came closer to beating his Big Bad (Stieber) than Caliendo has yet.

Iowas def not contending for first next year. But that lineup they will have is salty AF. It will be fun to watch them next year. It's OSUs moment right now, DT is the sexy choice right now. Iowas just steady improving to me, what should they do? I think doing some reactionary hiring of Askren/DT would hurt them too much in the short term. Gonna be a lot of good wrestlers in the portal next few years, if needed, but their depth is filling out too, albeit slower than OSU.

Depth? Other than Kennedy, Arnold, and Ferrari battling for two spots, where does Iowa even a NQ type guy that isn't currently starting? They have recruited horribly since their win in 2021 and only have 3 high school recruits that are helping their program. Bob has deep pockets and the financial investment in the Hawkeye's has allowed TnT to bring in enough help to remain very competitive, but that isn't a sustainable model.

The AD should be asking themselves why the team with Carver-Hawkeye arena, devoted fans that adore the program, ridiculously large amounts of NIL money, etc. are only landing 1 or 2 big name recruits each year. Guys used to grow up dreaming of wrestling for Iowa, now it seems more and more like an outlier that a top recruit goes there. Iowa fans don't want to admit it, but it's possible that the allure of the gritty, tough, hyper-intense ways of premier Iowa wrestling just might not be what these recruits are looking for.

It’s a wonder okst only beat Iowa ~30% of the time and averaged 4 spots behind Iowa over the last two decades.  No idea how both can be true.

Yup.  Just some of that famous altruistic and deep-seated love for Iowa that permeates the non-Iowa wrestling fanbase.

College wrestling is in a tough spot, so I think everyone wants to see Iowa thrive (maybe placing just below their favorite team). Iowa is a huge asset to college wrestling as a whole.

Maybe is has something to do with the Brands having charisma issues.

I'm missing the connection between the movie clip and TnT's charisma..?

They added Jordan Williams, and Sammy Alvarez, both are AA caliber at 49 or 57. Bailey at 41, basically their starters last year become their depth behind the transfers at 41-57 this year. They add two of their recruits to the lineup at 125 and 184, Ferrari is an AA level, no idea on Deluca. And like you said 165-174 is loaded. They're def being outpaced by PSU and OSU, but I just can't say they're not improving. I'm not an Iowa fan though, so I would prob be agreeing more if I really cared if they won another title.

They won a national title in 2021 and since then, they have finished 3rd (2022), 2nd (2023), 5th (2024), and 4th (2025). I'm not sure where the improvement has been. They haven't scored more than 82.5 points in the last 4 tournaments.

I see improvement from this past year to next year. They'll score more points next year and prob take 3rd. They'll stay there too. NIL is going to slowly move the top 4-5 to the absolute top, and the top 3 will be PSU OSU and Iowa. Don't get me wrong tho, Iowa is def buying their way there, but they'll be there...

They replaced 3 guys who did not AA (Cruz, 141 DNQ, & Parco) with 3 guys who did not AA (Peterson, Bailey, Williams). They did replace a non AA (Teemer) with a 7th (Alvarez), but they lose a champ (Buch) for a guy who I see as R12 at best (Endene). Caliendo’s ceiling is 2nd, again. PK could move up a placement or two, but isn’t beating Haines. Keuter could move up a placement or two with 3 of the top 4 graduating, but Yonger comes back. Their biggest difference will be replacing Arnold (DNP) for Ferrari (who is likely top 3), but I’m not sure that’s a big enough difference to make up for the lost points of Buch to Endene.

Well, please go on the NCAA website and let me know who won 2020 ncaa’s.

And sure, brands can get some credit, but maybe buchanan should get credit for not getting too broken by their training.    How did Parco and Teemer perform?  Injuring your athletes counts as bad coaching too.

While nobody won the team championship at the 2020 NCAA tournament, the NCAA website still has a summary article with a link to brackets:

Year-end stat leaders were also announced:

One thing that's surprising to me is that Iowa, despite all its success -- including its super impressive run from 1975 to 2000 -- has never had a four-time champ. The only schools with four-time champs are:

  • Cornell (2)
  • PSU (2, including 5xer)
  • OkSt
  • OhioSt
  • IowaSt

Iowa's NQ level guys that will likely not be in the lineup next year...

125 - Joey Cruz, Leo Deluca

133- I thnk Kale Peterson is a borderline NQ at 133

141-157 - Estrada and Victor Voinovich assuming that the Alvarez addition means they are on the bench

174-184 Gabe Arnold

197- Harvey Ludington is a blue chip recruit.

Ryder Block has not shown himself to be at a NQ level yet but he should be mentioned as solid depth.
